So tonight I was making my lean cuisine and yelled through the door to Ron, asking him what he was doing. He told me to make him some dinner...LOL...Gwen rarely cooks but I said ok. I had some fresh shrimp and a container of his favorite kind of sushi roll in the fridge so I made him a shrimp cocktail and arranged his sushi on a plate all nicely. LOL I made dinner...sorta. ;)
Anyway, he teased me mercilessly about it so I asked what he considered "making dinner", to which he replied steak, potatoes and beer. Fine! I'll make steak, potatoes and beer tomorrow. I'll show you!
 But I don't eat red meat...so I don't know how to cook a steak.
Anybody got any tips that'll help me show him I'm not totally useless? How does Gwen cook a steak? (Typically the answer to that is "Order in"...:winktongue:)

I like to grill my steak, it is best that way, but broiling in the oven or pan searing is ok too. I like a thick cut sirlion and I cook it to medium (warm pink center).
Here, this looks like a good guide - Sirloin Steak Cooking - grilling and broiling guide (http://howtocookasteak.com/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=a2b8773135429b0165a8004af519d1 0b&topic=10)

Do you have access to a grill?
Step 1 is marinate steak (ideally i'd start now if i were making for dinner tomorrow... but marinate at least 30 mins prior to cooking in fridge)
I have an easy marinade recipe if you'd like...
To cook just throw on grill... now the time depends on how thick and how "done" he likes his steak...
I use a george foreman for steak b/c i get smaller ones since dh don't do steak... so it takes all of like 4 mins total to cook to medium done-ness

Broiling is probably the easiest if you don't want to grill. Basically season it to what you want, stick it in an oven safe dish we do a cookie sheet with aluminum foil on it) and bake. It doesn't take all that long, depending on the cut of steak. As long as you watch it every 10 minutes you should be fine.
~OR~
Order it from a restaurant, take it home, trash the containers, put it in the oven to warm, and presto!

Trust me, that was my first instinct. ;)
Thanks for all the tips guys. I've watched a few web videos and I found a marinade that sounds pretty good. I just didn't know how long to cook something like that.

Broiling doesn't take long at all, unless you got a big o hunk of steak. Maybe 10 to 15 minutes. You can always take a knife and cut into it to see how done it is. Also, how does Ron like his steak? Some people like it really bloody, some like it really done.

He usually orders it medium. ;)

I'm one of those people that "ruins" steak :) I like mine cooked. Not burned and chewy but I don't want to see any red/pink in mine. haha
Not that that helps you with anything lol Unless you plan on making me one too ;)

I'll make you one! Of course I'll probably ruin it in my own Gwen-like way. LOL
The potatoes and the beer part of this meal doesn't worry me one bit though. :giggle:
He's in there laughing at me right now - I told him I had asked for help and he just shook his head and laughed.

I don't marinate mine usually; I just put a little salt, pepper and garlic and grill it up. I do eat it with some A1 on it though ;)

You guys rock. I think what I'm gonna do is a dry rub that I saw on the food network - brown sugar, salt and pepper. It sounds kinda good.
I want to knock his socks off - although not so much that he wants me to cook often.

That sounds pretty good, as long as you don't get too much brown sugar on there. If he likes stuff spicy, you could add a bit of red pepper flake too!

LOL :bblol:
Are you going to do a baked potato or something else with the potatoes? My DH likes a loaded baked potato with his steak. I like that ok too, but I would be good with little roasted potatoes too.

I haven't decided yet. Potatoes are like my favorite thing so I've got a lot of things to choose from. I might just do a simple baked potato, but that might be too "easy". :geek:
I'll keep that in mind about the brown sugar too - thanks for the tip. Red pepper flakes might be a good idea. :bbidea:

Have to spread the rep, but ditto! I don't like too many marinades, it goes from tasting like steak to tasting like, um....steak with lots of different flavors on it.:frantic:

Dales marinate is really good too if you can find it.
For potatoes, I like to eat baked potatoes with my steak but that's just me. I hate cooking them though b/c it takes so long.

You can put 'em in the microwave too; just be sure to poke holes in 'em so they don't explode ;)

Ohh yeah...ever since I found out you could microwave them, I have not had an oven baked potato once!

There are actually potatoes that are "microwave ready" that taste better than regular microwaved potatoes, but they are spendy. Like 99 cents each, which is almost the cost of a 5 lb bag.I like baked with steak also.

I never ever cook my baked potatoes in the oven. Too much time, too much electricity. I actually don't poke holes in mine either - I was told once you don't have to do that, so I stopped and nothing changed. Haven't had one explode on me yet haha.
I usually wash it then wrap it in a paper towel. Nuke it based on it's size, usually 5 minutes or so.
Okay uhh now it is 6:30am and a baked potato sounds good lol

steak- the most important thing is to get a good cut of meat. Not a lot of fat, but good marbleing.
All a good piece of meat needs is salt, pepper, and garlic.
roasting in the oven is easy. You should have a roasting pan that came with your stove. cover with foil. place in the oven leaving the door open a crack. Med. well should be about 5 minutes a side. you will have to turn the steak, remember to use oven mitts.
twice baked potatoes- I cheat when I make mine. I microwave them to cook them the first time. Then cut them in half and scoop out the insides with a spoon. Wait till they cool alittle before attemping that. I also bake an extra potato so they can be really loaded, then using my mix master I make dirty mashed potatoes. Bacon crumbles, cheese, chives, garlic, and milk and butter. Mix it all up together and then take a gallon ziploc bag. Cut a bottom corner off and "pipe" into the potato skins. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 30 minutes at 375.
Happy cooking!

So I didn't get to take pictures of the meal, but it went over pretty well. I made a steak - started by doing a dry rub of brown sugar, salt and pepper, did 4 minutes on each side on the stove and then put it in the oven for 20 minutes.
For the potatoes, I did a mash with sour cream, green onion, cheese and butter. I took a bite of those and they were yummy!
Ron said the steak turned out pretty good - he said it was a little saltier than he likes but it wasn't too salty. He said maybe next time a little less char on the outside but the inside was just how he likes it.
So it didn't go terribly but it wasn't perfect either. He ate the whole thing though so he couldn't have hated it too much.
Thanks for all the help girls!

We had grilled steak on Sunday; I froze the leftovers, so I may take them out sometime this week.

Sorry but this tickled me. You made it sound like you cook food in the fridge. Wow! that's one handy gadget.
I'm glad the meal went OK Gwen. I never cooked a thing with the Ex-Husband. He did it all. If he was away i used to "Ping" stuff in the microwave. Towards the end we used to eat seperate and "ping" our own food. How sad is that LOL.
DH is an excellent cook. I had to learn fast when we got together. He used to wind me up about Veggies coming from the ground and not straight out of a tin. And that Herbs DO exist. :laugh2: Now we grow our own Herbs.
Now i cook most nights. When DH's awake to eat or can be bothered. DH cooks at the weekends. Other than that it's "Chinese or Pizza and i'll phone em". ;)

Glad it worked out Gwen....you can have it be perfect or he'll be expecting it every night....lol
DH hates cooking steak...has a hard time not burning it while we cook the inside of it as we don't like any pink or red in our meat.
