Okay...I gotta get a news SS Card, then a new Drivers License and then I can go to the bank and put Eric on mine and me on his accounts/order checks and so on, then I have to mail proof (copy of SS Card and Marraige Cert to Mastercard to get that changed). Is that the proper order, any advice on how to ease the process?

Still working on mine as well. Got the SS card done. had to drive there and do it. Now they have changed the law and have to have (or see) original wedding license. i wasn't chancing the postal system losing the original one. No way.

Just get a certified copy of your marriage license. Take that to the DMV, and get your driver's license changed. Then take the new license and the cert. copy of your marriage license to the SS office and they can take care of that for you. As for Mastercard, just fill out the change of name/address form on the back of your bill. They usually don't require any info. You might have to call though if you want to allow Eric to use your account so that you can get him his own card. As for the bank, to add Eric to your account or vice cersa is to both walk into the bank together and ask to add the other person to your account. They will just need your drivers license to do that.

Okay cool...I didn't know if I went to SS or DMV first....I will go to DMV and then to SS Administration... we already have our marriage license (certified) copy back! It was waiting in the mailbox Wednesday when I got home. The credit card company said in order to change the name (I already had the address changed on all my stuff) I had to submit proof of new name and a request (word specific letter). I knew we had to both go into the bank together...BLAH as Shawna says...It's too **** hot outside and I'm dangerously close to starting my cycle to deal with this....grumpy me doesn't have to mow the yard though... Eric mowed before he came to get me for lunch! I can go home and water my flowers and start laundry and curl up in the hammock and read/sleep!
Thanks Lacey! (I got a pina colada waiting in the freezer for me Cindy)!

Sounds like you have the right idea. Once I got the certified copy of our marriage license I sent it to Social Security first. I was able to change my bank accounts without it sine I know everyone at the bank. If I remember correctly, the DMV wanted to see the marriage licence and my SS card.
I came across this site a while back, it has all the details about changing your name after the wedding and it was FREE, so here it is - http://www.angelfire.com/ma/dnsassoc/ Of course I don't know if this will help any of our international ladies, sorry.

It took me 2 yrs. to switch my stuff over bc I always worked on wk days and never had a chance to do it! When I finally changed my lic. all they looked @ was my marriage license(but you never know w/ each place!) I was lucky w/ my bank, they changed mine and Michael's acct. by just taking my word for it!(They didn't even look @ my marriage lic.)
We were also lucky w/ our car insurance, all we did was call them and tell them we got married and they changed our acct. right then! (Which saved us alot of money!:))

I have a few odd bills left to change to my new name like the electic bill and what not. But I got my license first. Then sent a letter with my marriage certifacate and new drivers license with a friend who just got married to the SS office. And they did it for me then. Like others I work all day during the week. At my bank even though I work there they needed to have a copy of my marriagne certifacate on file to change my name. I also had to send a copy to the HR department so they could change my name on all that stuff like life insurance and what not. And I had to change the beneficary (sp?) to my new husbands name. He had already had me as his. And he had to send things to have me added to his insurance. I dropped mine and picked up his so if and when I ever get done work to stay home and baby sit that is all set and I wont have to worry about that.

Hey ladies,
Well, Hugo works for Social Security, and (around here at least), you have to get your new SS card before anything. The DMV won't issue you a new license without it. Also my HR dept. at work wouldn't change anything til I brought mine in- luckily it came in the mail today!! So tomorrow I am going to fix everything at my job- the new insurance, e-mail change, taxes, payroll, ID, etc.
Here's my question... do you need your new ID to change your bank acct.? I guess not, but thought I would check. Our bank is across the street vs. the DMV is 20 minutes away and I do not feel like going to stand in that line tomorrow. I just want to get the bank and work stuff squared away, then worry about the line at the DMV.
It's all a pain but it's worth it to see your new name, isn't it!! :D

I know that when we went to the bank to change a few things around, they wanted to see our marriage certificate if I didn't already have my name changed on my license. Since I didn't change my name, it didn't matter. But you will need photo id to do ANYTHING at the bank. Also, both parties will need to be there to get anything done. If your name isn't changed on your drives license yet, you will need your marriage certificate to prove that your name was changed.

Lacey, thanks. I guess I can try with the SS card, old ID and marriage cert. and just explain to them I haven't had time to go stand in line yet. The truth (for you guys) actually is I have 2 HUGE zits right now and I do NOT want that to show up on my new ID!!!! So even if I have to wait til next week then so be it- although I would like to have the new bank acct. set up before I go over to HR, to save me a second trip there!

I just have one thing to say. I remained totally stress free on this topic. I felt no reason to put myself through all of this. I told Sean that if he wanted our names to match, he knew where the DMV, SS office, contacts number for the credit cards, bank, and everything else were located just as easily as I did. When put into that perspective, it wasn't so important to him that our names matched. Just remember, you don't have to do it unless you really really want to.

Having Eric's last name means alot to me (the last one didn't) but this time EVERYTHING is different (and much better)...I spent the day with his mom/dad & aunt/uncle yesterday and heard tons of "Vinson" family history...it was pretty cool and very nice to know that his family is so PROUD to have me carrying his name........
This isn't stressing me.......I'm premenstrual right now and get a headache and a few zits whether I like it or not. I am trying to stay stress free and so far it's working I just don't like the extra leg work and rude people at the DMV and SS office I know I will encounter, today would not be a good day for them to pee in my cheerious if you KWIM! LOL! Good morning Lacey!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just saying Eric could just as easily become Mrs. (insert your maiden name here.) You don't think you could get him to go along with that? Think of the safety of those poor SS and DMV workers. Good morning, Ellen. By the way, I know exactly how you feel- headache, no clothes that fit today, and cramps. It sucks!

Well that was easy! I went to the SS office waited 15 minutes, showed him my marriage license, DL and old SS card.....answered a few questions and wallah!!!!!!!!!!! I now have a letter to take to the courthouse (DL division)(after 24 hrs, their computers are linked) and get my DL! I called the courthouse and told her I just got married but had a DL from another county and she told me to bring:
1) letter from SS office
2) DL
3) Marraige License
4) proof of residency (lease, old utility bills etc)
She said that in 24 hours the SS office would update my info and she could pull it up and issue my new DL. So tomorrow I will take lunch at 1 and I'm DONE!
Finally proof that my tax dollars go to someone who knows what they hell they are doing!

The name change wasn't stressful to me at all. The worst part of it for me was standing in line at the DMV to get my license (and I got it that day). But it was something I really wanted to do, I was eager to do it so it didn't seem like a chore.

LOL, it isn't really all that bad. But like Lacey said, it isn't something that you have to do.
I actually know of someone that got married a few years ago and the groom changed his name instead of the bride. From what I heard, it had something to do with the brides grandmother giving them a good bit of money, and the bride was an only child.

I work at a License Office in MO and it is a little different from that. You have to have a photo ID with your married name on it before the SS office will issue you a new card. All you need to get your name changed on your DL is the marriage license.

At our SS office you have to have your Marriage License and two proofs of ID (one with a photo) then they change it, link to the DL office and in 24 hours you take your letter from the SS office and your marriage license to the DL office and they issue you a new DL. I have to have the other stuff because my old license is from a different county and I have to prove residency in this county for at least 90 days.

I guess I should start reading up on requirements for PA to get your name changed. What's needed at the DMV, SS office, all that fun stuff. That will be quite the project to keep me busy after the wedding.
I agree with Angel, it sounds confusing. Hopefully it isn't tha tbad when I actually go to do it. My problem I think, will be remember everything that will need to be changed.

When I started looking into this last week, I found that there are a whole bunch of websites dedicated to changing your name. They have bridal name change kits that you can buy for $30 and come with all the paperwork and everything that's specific to your state. I actually got one as a bridal shower gift. There is one site that also gives you all the forms for free... it's

Hope this helps everyone out! :D

I'm glad someone started a thread about this, because I was having trouble with figuring out which to do first. So, I should get my license first, then my ss card? What about all the bills? they are all in his name.

That part really depends on your state. I would call and find out what the requirements are for both. Me, I got my SS card first since it took the longest. And if I remember correctly, the DMV asked for it when I got my license changed.
... What about all the bills? they are all in his name.
If you want to add your name to the bills then you (or better yet, he) will have to call them and have you added.
