This is dedicated to those Born 1930-1985!

TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's 70's and 80's

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.

And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound, CD's or Ipods, no cell phones!, no personal computers , no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,

made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them .. . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives

for our own good

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Here Here!!
Alot of times I wish my kids were able to grow up the way I did. These days I am afraid to let my kids go outside to play, unless I am out there...

Man I just missed the age thing.. I'm 1986, but I remember not having a lot of those things and playing outside all day, riding our bikes around looking to make a hide and seek team and using the whole neighborhood for it, and then our mothers calling us in when the streetlights came on. My parents didnt have a cell phone until I was 12 and we had just gotten a computer in 1995, though we didnt have internet and nobody knew how to use it.... we only knew how to type assignments on it and hit print...

Seriously, that is perfect. As a teacher, my colleagues and I complain about that kind of stuff all the time. I watch my FBIL's kids, and complain that they spend so much time inside playing video games! That is truly a great email that I will certainly be sending along! THanks, Angel!

Lol...funny how the times change!! I look at my youngest cousin who when he was four, was a skinny little thing, but his time of tv, playstation and eating hot dogs all the time is catching up! He's fat and suffers from ADD!! I think we should add that children were way less diagnosed with A.D.D back then too!! Infact I had never heard of it until about 1996. Could it be all the videogames, sugar, and lack of physical activity?? In some cases I say yes!!! In others...maybe not! But still, the steady increase in Ritalin being prescribed is going up and i believe if parent's changed their children's diets and made them go outside and play, less children would have to be on this drug!!! Sorry if any of you have children with ADD and are on Ritalin, I understand that some cases are not like the ones above! BUt having two cousins from the same family who were diagnosed with it and watching their diet and how they plunk their lard butts infront of the tv and video games makes it no wonder they were diagnosed in the first place!!

Scientific evidence backs you up, Shawna. There is proof that television (Nickelodean, Cartoon Network, ect) with all of the bold colors, loud noises, and constat activity actually damages infants and toddler's neurons so that their brain as they grow older isn't able ot send certain messages properly. This in hibits their self control and concentration.

Of course we have also morphed into a kid based culture where parents feel their child is entitled to certain things. There is nothing that falls back on the kids. I see it all the time. The school will confiscate a kid's cell phone and instead of the parent backing us up by saying, "Well, you aren't allowed to have a cell phone." The kid either has a new cell phone the next day or mom's attorney is on the phone demanding the property be returned. Kids get coddled now day sby sensative parents who wll soon realize they aren't doing any favors to society. I was always an incredinly well behaved honor roll student because I new if I got so much as a toe out of line, I would have my *** beat. When I got to old for that to work, I didn't want to be stuck in my room not being allowed to use the car anymore.

I love this. It is so different with our kids. Mine just got there first video game thing but I refuse to let them sit in front if it all day. They like it outside. But letting them run around and not know where they are is not allowed, not these days with so many crazies out there. Ya never know who will take your child. I miss the old days. Can we go back? Even just for a day? Any one with me?

And I don't know about the states, but there has been many studies done here to support that diets also affect children negatively and that sometimes a large change in diet can decrease the way an "ADD" child might act out!

It can effect it in more hyper children. I was very energetic when I was little. I slept about3 hours a night and never napped. So my mom took me off of artifiical dyes, colorings, caffeine, and sugar. She claims that it helped a little tiny bit, but I was just energetic. I still am. I can't sit still fo rlong periods of time. I never could. I can concentrate on anything forever but I just can't be glued to one place doing it.

You know that I am a firm advocate of natural and organics. I limit the amount of processed foods and chemicals that we take in here. I know that pumping your kids full of all of that stuff 24/7 isn't good. You can't fill up on preservatives and "fake food" and be all right.

I have three kids and often have my neice and nefews (one with adhd and is on ritilin). They play outside most of the day, I sit across the street to watch. They have all the latest gadgets, but have to earn the money for the devices. They must have outdoor time before playing video games!! DH insists that I let the kids eat dirt (worms and mud pies) Ewww lol
I try to get the kids to live how I did when I was a child so much I cut off the cable 5 years ago!!!

I try very hard to give them the open life I had!

It's definatly amazing how well we all turned out. I am always in awe of how lazy and all the problems the kids these days have. When i was little a Peanut allergy was so rare. We grew up on the stuff. If anyone had an allergy they had to eat in the office rather then banning it all together.
My neices and nephews are pretty good still. They love to play outside. Rarely are they inside. They watch movies in the morning and thats about all the time they spend infront of the television.
