I'm wondering how many of us had one. If you did, what was it like?

No we never had one and never even really considered it...they are not that big around here and we could not afford one!!!!

I had never even heard of one until someone on OneWed had one...but it wasn't important to me....to me that's what announcements in newspapers are for. Plus, I didn't want to take away from my wedding budget!!!

Well technically I had a "Surprise Engagement Party" It was supposed to be a birthday party, but I didnt know I was going to get an engagement ring. Everyone else did though.

We didn't have one. I never really heard of them until I joined other planning sites.

We didn't have one and I never knew anyone that did until lately when Hugo's cousin got engaged and they are having one. To me it seems like asking for more gifts before the showers... but then again, why not celebrate whenever we have the chance? (As long as gifts aren't "expected" at all the parties!!)

We didn't have one. I never thought of having one either. I was all partyed out after the engagement. We got engaged over the holidays and we did enough partying then. After that we just enjoyed time at home.

Nope .... second wedding for both of us - no party, no fanfare, no bridal showers, no newspaper announcement and no trumpets blaring LOL
That said, my aunt gave us a lovely hand painted china plate (rather ironic isn't it?) & an engagement card.

We had one. It was a blast. We kept it low key and casual since all of the other wedding affairs were a bit more formal. It was a nice reason to just throw a party to be honest.

Strange that I can have a "sort-of". But, I do.
On Friday night, the night before the wedding, we're having a cocktail party. Traditionally, Indians have a series of parties before the wedding, and one is an engagement party and one is a mehendhi (henna) party (where the bride's arms, hands, feet, and lower legs are covered in patterns with henna). We're combining the two into one large party for both sides of our families. It's a lot cheaper than doing two sep. parties, and still gets to incorporate more Indian traditions.

Yes we sure are having an engagement party!!! I am so excited!! it's in 10 days :bbeek:. It's so wierd that not many people have them over there, here they are almost like a certainty! I don't know anyone here that hasn't had one??
We are very different in some ways like I have never heard of a groomscake??? lol.
