View Full Version : Redecorating... very. slowly.
So, I figure it's time to start a redecorating thread. I am going to redo the house so that it doesn't have so many memories in it. Eventually. It's going to be a long process especially with the baby on the way, but with everything I do to make ready for the baby, and make the house more personal, I am going to try to post it here.
First of all, I was going to put the baby in the master (smallest) bedroom, and rent out Sierra's room. The master is two town brown and Sierra's room is psychadelic tons of colors.
Now that I've decided I want the baby in Sierra's room, I need to paint it because the colors are just a bit much IMO. So, I'm hoping to use the same colors in Sierra's room that I used in the master bedroom - unless I found another earth tone or two that jump out at me.
Anyway, first two major things on the agenda are: I need to paint Sierra's (from here on out "the baby's") room, and I'm going to rearrange the living room. I have a sectional in the living room right now. Here's how the floor plan is now:
http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=6084&stc=1&d=1274455627
And here's what I want to do with it... the corner unit in the top left corner I think I want it to be a floor to ceiling unit, or a corner hutch. But we'll see. Havne't found anything perfect yet 'cuz I have to have the main furniture first :D The living room is going to take awhile. I have to sell a bunch of stuff in order to buy the stuff I want - and that all takes time.
http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=6085&stc=1&d=1274455683
I'm looking forward to seeing the progression of this!
The pub table will go in the kitchen where the hutch is that I want to move into the living room. Or get rid of it and get a different one. Depends on what color gliders I get 'cuz the one I have so far is light wood - as is the hutch.
Meanwhile, mom is helping me with trimming back my roses and bringing them back to healthy as they started fading on me this year. We planted some tomatoes and strawberries in buckets yesterday and we have plans to build another planter box so that I can grow other veggies. All will take time and we might not get around to it but for now I'm going to have tomatoes and strawberries IF I can get them to stay alive hehe.
Baby: I want to get a bedroom set for the baby. I'd like a matching crib/changing table/dresser combo, and I've got a bunch of favorites on CL that I've picked out. The best deal I can find is $250, which is SMOKIN for all three, but I don't have that kind of money yet. I have to sell Sierra's bed then hopefully I can focus on getting the furniture for the baby's room.
I'd REALLY like to get a new bed for my room, but that's several hundred bucks I'm not ready to spend on ME yet, so I might bring the guest bed (twin) into my room and get rid of my bed (queen). Mainly because the guest bed is up off the floor and it's more comfortable than my bed. For now my mattress is on the floor and climbing UP out of bed is HARD!!!!
I got an awesome votive holder that I can't wait to hang.. I think I want to put it in between the gliders when I get there. I'll get pics of it and post em when I can :). It holds 8 votives and it's a black steel loopy lookin' thing. It's pretty sweet and I got it for $7 at an auction.
My next BIG project will be putting a fence in the front yard and getting rid of the lawn - er - weed collection. I would LOVE to bark the front and only have to worry about the back yard. I might even be able to get GRASS to grow in the back if I can focus on it long enough. Both take lots of time and money which I don't have yet. Soooo... I am basically prioritizing my ideas hehe.

I like the idea of getting a new fresh look! I hope you are able to find everything you need furniture & decor-wise! You'll have to post before & after pics once you get everything the way you want it.
Thanks ladies!!!
Danielle - I plan on doing most of this via Craigslist or auctions. Only thing I plan on getting new is my mattress, but that's not 'till way later.

I saw my first Hobby Lobby ever when I was in OK but we were in a time crunch and I never got to stop in :(
I've been watching for deals but I can't really afford anything right now so the living room transformation is going to go. very. slowly. Meanwhile I'm starting to list stuff on Ebay again so that I can have some $$ to play with :)

I hound the CL free section like a hawk LOL. And I got someone from that freecycle site coming to pick up some of my junk right now :D I feel bad posting a "wanted" ad without giving anything, so I figured I'd pass something on before posting a wanted. Yay!!!

Glad to hear it worked for you! I heard about it yesterday from a gal at church.
Progress!!!
Ya'll saw the baby room... It's not done yet but we got the majority done:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs605.snc3/31876_403440028339_748393339_4173328_4780239_n.jpg

So, here's my living room now, as mom took the couch away for me... I'm down to ONE chair, and an outside plastic chair for if I have a guest come over LOL. Time to find me another glider/ottoman and the couch I want for the window wall. The white wall units are still in the air as far as what to do with them.
I also bought one more set of curtains that match the ones below because they just barely don't cover my window -so I got another set to make it completely cover. I will hang those tonight :)
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs545.ash1/31876_403440068339_748393339_4173333_3629654_n.jpg
Walmart is having a half off - half off sale. So I got a sheet set that is white with circles on it... I'll have to post that once I get it on my bed. It's colorful and summery... I mean, for $7 for a queen sheet set, couldn't go wrong!
I also got entry way rugs for $2.50 each, so I moved that rug (lower left corner of the pic above) to the hallway. Guess I gotta get pics of those too hehe.
Now, here's what I'm thinking. For the window wall, I want something that isn't going to take up half the living room floor, and I'd prefer not to get just a normal sofa. However, the love seat I wanted to get isn't really going to work because no one can sleep on it... so, I was thinking of getting a fancy futon, that way people can sleep on it, and it is still fairly compact/space economical.. here's the ones I have in mind:
(New prices)
$265 (I like this one cuz it has the arm rest/cup holders...)
http://www.bedroomdiscounters.net/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/cst300154-B-IMG.87152216_std.jpg
$250 w/ the blue cushion - comfier?
http://www.bedroomdiscounters.net/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/300068-IMG.361224702_std.jpg
$265 - I like this one because it's faux leather (doesn't collect fleas lol)
http://www.bedroomdiscounters.net/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/cst300153-IMG.87152911_std.jpg
Now, the outlet is about 25 mins from my house. I might go look and see what they've got in stock..... Maybe I'll grab my sister tonight and head out there... :)

Thanks Danielle :D This is fun!
I just found this futon on CL. I've decided I'm going to keep going with the light wood color in the house - not sure if I'll be able to incorporate that with the couch/futon idea, but I found this and kinda love it....

Yeah I used to sleep on one - one of the reasons I am going to be very picky... I kinda wanna go new with this, but I've found two prospectives on CL that I'd like to give a try first ($100 ea vs over $200 :winktongue: ).
Thanks for the heads up!
I am not positive I wanna go the futon route but it seems to be appropriate... OR if I can find a loveseat that is a hide a bed/leather, I'd probably rather go that route for the sake of comfort. Who knows lol. I'm exploring for now... if I find something at the futon outlet that just grabs my heart I might do something on a whim but we'll see!

Things are looking lovely! I like the ideas you have. For the couch, it's just my opinion, but I'd go with one that has arms.. I'm a couch-arm leaner, lol. But if you're not, the other ones are quite nice, also. :)
Heather - good point! If I can find a loveseat that is a hide a bed I'd rather go that route.. I hear ya about leaning. I never sit "correctly" in a couch LOL.
ETA: Katie - I feel (personal opinion) that IKEA is a bit overpriced on their couches... not to mention I haven't found one there that I find very comfy anyway.... Just my opinoin though :) But I would prefer a new to used futon for sure. Specially since I can get a new one for $250!

The blue futon looks super comfy!
We had a futon in our office for quite awhile when we were still in the states. Easy way to make the cheap ones really comfortable, use 2 cushions instead of one. ;) We had two of those flimsy black cushions stacked on top of each other with a double thick cushion zippy cover to hold them together. Everyone used to say it was the most comfortable futon they'd ever sat on. lol

Well I spent too much at DMV and have more fees coming :censored: so I'm kissing the new futon/couch idea goodbye for awhile :(
However, I am going to jump on this - $50 for this glider (too much but it's the perfect color for my living room!) And it's got everything I'm looking for except for the reclining part, which I'm okay with. AND it's got the ottoman!
Ain't it purty?!!!

Hey if I get the glider I won't be so hard pressed to get a couch :) And the only thing supposedly wrong with the glider is "it squeaks" they said. So I'm hoping it ain't something a little grease can't fix. I'm going to ask my stepdad who's a woodworker and see what he says :frogg:

I get that with my knees. It's the ageing process.
Nothing a good cup of tea wont fix. In your case, sitting in the chair drinking. Not pouring it on the chair.

WOOHOOO!!!! I got the glider! It's got a cracked arm but I am going to wood glue it, and it does in fact creak. They tried to put baby powder in the joints but all that did was make a mess.
The seat cushion needs a little mending where it attaches to the chair, but other than that, it's IMMACULATE!!!! Not only that, all the cushions come off for easy cleaning!
Didn't have to put it on the roof  It fit IN the car!

LOL I cracked up about the baby powder! What on earth made them try that? Anyways great find!! Congrats.
Mitch - It's a small car and the chair is larger than my OTHER glider. I just took all the cushions off and made it opposite of the passenger's seat pretty much. Don't tell me something won't fit I'll make it fit
It, however, is not very comfortable. I sat in it for a few hours last night and my bum was hurting. So I'm going to try the other one tonight for a movie or two and see which one is more comfortable.
Danielle - I don't know what they were thinking lol.
Well we were at the thrift store today where I got my glider and mom found a bed. I've been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for years, and now that I'm pregnant it is SO hard to get out of bed. So I've been in the market for a bed anyway. I have the mattresses (they're about.. 19 years old, but they work) so not only was the bed marked half off, I had a $10 off coupon, so we got the bed for $30 - and it was mom's treat or else we couldn't pull it off. WOOHOO! It makes my room look a lot smaller but for now it'll work - the cross boards we put under the mattress are the wrong size so I have to go buy a few 1x's so that I can secure it a bit better. It'll do the job though for now until I can do that.
I got the sheets for $7 (usually $26 ish) at Walmart... I couldn't pass that up!
And I have had this votive holder for awhile I couldn't figure out what to do, but for now I just might mount it in my room 'cuz it goes so good with my bed!
I wasn't about to make the bed... I'm only going to sleep with a sheet tonight anyway since it's 95* outside!

They look SO comfortable! What a great deal!
They look SO comfortable! What a great deal!
Totally - any brand new set from Becks couldn't compare to this set comfortwise. I'm a La-Z-Boy lover lol. I'm beyond happy with them so far :whoohoo:

Nice suite. Plus we get a glimpse of Will into the bargain. ;) Even though he is trying to hide behind his arm.
I "Almost" had a new suite. But the eBayer needed it to be collected this weekend and DH hasn't got the big Van. So i didn't bid. It never sold so we would have got it for £1. :(

I'm glad you finally found something....those other gliders didn't look all that comfy!

Glad your patience paid off! Now you don't have to be uncomfortable on those gliders anymore!
Thanks!! I *should* post pics of the tornado path of a home I live in right now LOL. I got that back room emptied. A LOT of it was Matt's - which is good 'cuz it leaves less for me to deal with. But I still got quite a bit to go through. I am exhausted, but I'm hoping to have it all gone through by the end of the week. :crossfingers:
So, the living room is pretty clean now... I mean, not as cluttered as it was. Matt finally picked his stuff yesterday so even my garage is almost empty! It's a MESS in there, but I've plans to clean it all out and throw a bunch of junk away. Who knows when - it's so stinkin hot out there!
Anyway.... hopefully I can get somewhere on the baby room this weekend... I don't know where though  hahahaa.

I can't believe I never saw this thread! I am terrible catching up with threads.
:bang_head:
Just went through the whole thing. Great changes! I've seen a lot of it in your other threads, but it's great to see it all together! I am glad you're enjoying it. I love those CL deals! Between CL and my Mom's friend we furnished our entire apartment for under $450. This is nice stuff, too. Plus we have an extra couch to sell, so hopefully $350 when we're done selling!

wow nice price for the recliners and couch. They look comfy too.
I'm soooo lagging in the photo department! I haven't taken a belly pic in what, 3 weeks? And I rearranged my kitchen and part of my living room this weekend and I still haven't got pics.
Basically my hutches in the kitchen switched places and my dining table went into the kitchen, and Miley's crate came out into the living room. I'll get pics soon, but I'm totally happy with how it turned out :)
Okay, so I STILL haven't got pics of the kitchen - oh well.
But mom brought me a rug for the living room. It's SO not what I had in mind, but hey, at least Katie will have something between her and the cold tile! And at least it's blue and not a bunch of bright colors haha.

Might not be what you were thinking, but at least mom tried right?
You're right Brenda - and I love her for it. She had it in her daycare and doesn't need it so it came to me. I'm very grateful for it! It's starting to grow on me already lol.

I think its cute! Might go better in Katie's room, but we'll take what we can get for now! :)

You do realise that you'll be sitting there and subconsciously doing the ABC and numbers. :laugh2:
Can't grumble at a freebie. ;) When the Summer comes round again you can put the rug in Katies room.
Mitch you're so right
Katie - I'm pretty sure the rug won't fit in Katie's room... I think the rug is bigger than her room is wide!
So Jenn's mom wants the rug for her classroom LOL. I told her if she finds me a modern one that'll match my house a bit better then I'd trade her. I think it's more talk than action though.
I have big plans for my yard... and here's where my ideas are starting. I need a fence by the time Katie's walking - at LEAST in the front yard. I also want a retaining wall for the sake of having a nice yard, so here's what I'm thinking:
Retaining wall that goes up the drive way, across the front, and up the side to the corner of the house - and digging out the side between the house and the fence so that it's parking area. The excess dirt we dig out will go in the front to fill in the yard so it'll end up being flat instead of sloping.
I want to use either cinder blocks ($1 each), or cylinders which I might be able to get for free!!! Here's the only idea I've started playing with so far:

Also, I want to cement the side yard all the way back to the back patio so it's even with the back patio. The red on the left is where I want to cement so that I have parking and a carport in the back yard, plus I'd love to get that shed on sturdy ground. The red on the right determines the RV parking - where it'll be dirt with bricks (the blue) depicting where the wheels go. That way the ground can still drain/breathe without being cemented in - I think going that route I won't have to get a permit for it because the ground is still open. I might even gravel it so that it drains cleaner.

Andddd here's my starting point with the front yard if any of you have any better ideas as far as the wall goes ;)

Today I'm listing my dishes for sale. I've decided I want to go with something a bit smaller and lightweight. The denim dish set that Matt's mom bought me for Christmas last year is awesome, and I still really like the pattern, but I really want to just start over. They're heavy duty and I want to go with something more of a Corelle, especially with my tile floors....
Soooo, I just listed them on CL. Keep your fingers crossed that they sell for my asking price so I can buy a Corelle set!

Good luck! I love Corelle. I always had them growing up, and love that they're lightweight AND that I can drop the occasional bowl/plate without it breaking!
