Our reception is outside under a large white tent. I have opted to go without sides since it is summer and the side walls would just keep the heat it. (we have a back-up in case of rain). I want to drap the outside poles with fabric to give it a more elegant feel. I bought some organza and it is much to sheer, tulle just doesn't give the right look. I am thinking chiffon, but is there any other alternative (cheaper). Also any other tent decorating tips would would be great!

I don't know of any appropriate fabric that would be less than chiffon. However, you might try OnlineFabricStore.com (http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/SearchResult.aspx?KeyWords=chiffon) for chiffon. Depending on how much you need, it can be as little as $2/yard. We used that store for the ivory charmeuse for our chuppah.
Oh, and as for other tent decorating tips, you may want to look at the lighting section (http://sites.google.com/site/2dbride/decor/lighting) of my planning bio. Both uplighting and paper lanterns can work very nicely in a tent.
