Can anyone come up with a way to do food the cheapest way possible for a reception? Having it catered is probably going to cost too much. We were planning on doing it all ourselves.

Originally we thought of doing ham and turkey and just a few simple sides, like baked potatoes and then vegetables. But we'd have to make so much ham and turkey!! I think my stepdad came up with something under $2000 for 300 people (we're rounding it up to 300).

Then he was thinking about steak, which he really wants to do. He said he can get the best cuts of steak for about $8 a person, but that doesn't include the potatoes and veggies to go along with it. So we were figuring that to be about $3000 total. I mean $10 a person isn't bad, but coming up with all this money is hard, so we're trying to cut costs best we can.

So he thought about pizza from Pizza Villa (the place we want to have our rehearsal dinner). He was thinking they're probably about $10 for large and one large would cover 3 people. So we'd need 100 pizzas ($1000) plus we'd probably need a salad bar, so we figured probably close to $2000 again (and I only just thought of bread sticks, probably should have those too with pizza). I really liked the pizza idea, it's different, which suits us ;) but it's still a lot. Though there's a possibility that we could get a discount (not for sure thought) if we buy that many pizzas at once...especially if we're also using them for the rehearsal dinner (feeding 30 people). But that's something we'd have to check in on. They might not give us a discount.

He'd mentioned that a friend of our family is having a wedding. The mom is my parent's hair stylist. So he was getting his hair cut and she was telling him about her daughters upcoming wedding. They don't have to money to really throw something big. And they're apparently inviting a LOT of people (like I was..400 something). So they're going to have a late wedding at 6pm and then only serve hors d'oeuvres. He proposed we do something like that. But the problem with that is our wedding starts at 4 and the reception at 6. I'm not sure we could pull that off, though it would save quite a bit of money. Also, our invitations already say "feast" (medieval wording lol) and having snacks isn't really a feast.

Oh, and my stepdad is completely against serving sandwich meat. My mom suggested it. When he told me I said we'd definitely consider it because it would probably save a bit of money, but he said he doesn't want to serve anything at my wedding that he wouldn't allow at his own. haha (I think he's afraid people won't get full, and he feels the meal is a very important part of the reception. something people will remember).

So does anyone have any suggestions that might lower the costs?

We went to a wedding last year that had appetizers only and the reception started at 6pm. They had a huge selection and it actually worked out great (I had my doubts LOL).

Have you checked your local grocery store? Most offer catering options. Or Sam's/Costco??

I mentioned Sam's to my stepdad. He doesn't have a membership, but both of Luke's parent's do and so does his older sister. So I'm sure we could go through one of them and give them the money if we went that route.

We'll have to look into it though. Thanks. I forgot about them!

For our rehearsal dinner we had a local restaurant mix us up a huge batch of their pulled pork and we set out all the fixings for pulled pork sandwiches and a bunch of different side salads (potato/pasta/bean/etc...) It ended up being very cost effective since it was mostly DIY, but with the restaurant providing the bulk of the meal we weren't slaving for hours in a kitchen. Granted, we only had 30 guests...

Is there a restaurant with a dish you really like (maybe lasagna or something?) that you could talk to about making you a big batch of it?! Sam's club or Costco are great suggestions too - even grocery stores have good party platters sometimes. A friend of mine had a bunch of deli trays from Walmart at her reception!

My dad made a bunch of pulled pork for our wedding. Then we had veggies and various other sides to complete the dinner. Maybe you could get a good deal on pork from a grocery club.

You could do pasta fairly reasonable. If you did two types of pasta with bread and salad it shouldn't be too expensive.

I think the easiest thing you could do would be to cut down on the guest list. I know it would be a bummer, but I honestly think that would cut down a lot on your financial problems and your stress.

The two ideas I had have already been mentioned - pulled pork (which my mom did for all of our graduation parties - she always used a cut called a "knuckle" and it made for the BEST sandwiches!) and some kind of pasta (always cost effective). If you have a friend who does catering, that might help with the price. Another idea would be roasted chicken breasts, though that calls for some big grills!

Here's what we did: http://forums.onewed.com/showpost.php?p=426212&postcount=1

It cost us, I figure... at most $500 to feed 80 people. I wasn't a vegetarian back then.

We had A LOT of help though...

How about lasagna, salad and bread sticks. Pasta can really stretch a lot. You could have a veggie platter and cheese and crackers out on a table for munchies too.

I think for our wedding we're just going to have either a buffet type thing, or just like fingerfoods. I told my mom I really didnt want to do the whole dinner thing b/c we're more than likely having our reception at my moms house by the pool.

I'm glad Christine saw this thread - I was totally going to recommend you check out what she did. I was amazed by how they made money stretch and were still able to have an intimate and beautiful wedding. :soppy:

Thanks everyone for all your comments! They've all helped and got us thinking.

After talking to Lukas and talking to my stepdad, it looks like we're leaning towards spaghetti dinner. Just something easy, quick and simple. Just noodles, sauce, meatballs, cheese, garlic bread and side salad. I think (minus the meatballs, which I think Luke's stepmom is probably going to make...she already offered to make them back before we had to cut a lot of things down) we can do this for a little over $1000, which is much better!!

We still need to talk to my mom about it and see what she says about it. But it looks like this might work best for us. So I'm a little at ease about it now!!

The pulled pork was also a great idea, I think that might be my second choice if the spaghetti doesn't work out for us! So we'll still keep that in mind just in case!!

My mom and one of her friends got all of my sister's wedding food from Sam's. I'm not sure what they spent total, but it was extremely reasonable. They had fruit trays, vegetable trays, cheese trays, spiral sandwiches, meatballs, cocktail sausages, cheese straws, etc. It worked out really nicely!

We had a local restaurant come in and serve BBQ and fajitas for about $10 a person. It was great! And there were definitely options that cost a little less than that, even. Just talk to restaurants in your area and see what you can do! It's soo much easier than trying to coordinate it yourself.
