View Full Version : I <3 My Dogs

I have had my dogs for almost 4 years now, but I figured I would post a little about them :grinhappy:

Both of our dogs are Italian Greyhounds (IG's for short); they are kind of like a miniature Greyhound (we get asked that a lot), but they are a different breed ;)

Anyway; DH and I started thinking of getting a dog shortly after we got married. We talked about what we wanted and didn't want and how it would change our lives and all. We made a list of the breeds we liked and started researching them. IG's won out; they were just a great fit for us.

We got our first one on March 19th 2006; he was kind of an early first anniversary present, our Anniversary is in April.

I will add more in another post to keep this from being too long ;)

Oh pics please!

I have 3 dogs and can't imagine my life without them. They are all young (ages 3, 2, and 1) so I hope they will be with us for a long time.

The first 2 I had prior to meeting FH and the third we got together (kinda). Long story short a foster dog I had had puppies one night at 2am (complete suprise....we did not know puppies were on their way) and we kept one of the pups. I didn't think there was anyway FH would let me have another so I didn't even ask. Ii kept talking to this one pup and telling him he was my fav pup and I would make sure he got an extra special home. One day FH came home from work and picked up the pup and said you know we could name him Kona and he could stay here with us. So that is how Kona became our dog.
(we still foster but prefer to foster males now! hahahaha)

In our research on IG's we found the only real drawback being their tendency for leg breaks, but the older they were the chances went down. So we decided to look for an older dog.

We found a local breeder that just happened to have a 9 mo old dog that had fallen out of her show stock because he had gotten too big for the breed standard.

We went to see him and I feel in love; I cried when I saw him, though not sure why ;)

Anyway; we brought him home and named him Enzo. Here are a couple pics of him on his first night home.

He became attached to me very fast! He liked DH ok, but much preferred me.

Sometimes he would even bark and growl at DH! Lucky he is not so bad with this anymore.

He was mostly potty trained, so it just took a little time to get him to learn to go where we wanted him too. Luckily he was fully crate trained, so that was no problem. He slept in his crate at first, but I would let him cuddle with me for a bit after DH left for work and I took him out to potty ... he started getting up earlier and earlier to potty and we finally just let him sleep in the bed ;)

More in next post ...

So we had talked about getting a girl too; we were going to wait a year, but then found out the breeder we got Enzo from had a litter of blue/gray puppies (DH wanted a solid blue one) ... I asked to see pictures, just to "see" and not thinking of getting one ;)

Here is the pic -

How cute right?!

We kept in touch for a few weeks ... here she is again at 12 weeks -

DH and I went back and forth about not wanting a puppy, but we gave in ... we took Enzo and went to see her to see how they got along. They did well and we brought her home and named her Roxy.

Here are some pic of her first night home -

She was so tiny; like 5 or 6 lbs -

Enzo and Roxy loved to play and wrestle and Roxy was quite vocal when they would play (and still is) ...

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5820&stc=1&d=1267811867

They would play and wrestle like this all the time! This was one of the hardest things for me to get use to. I know now they are just playing and I can tell when they get too rough. But I was so worried Enzo would hurt her and the leg break thing worried me too ...

Enzo says puppies have shark teeth ... Roxy was playing a little rough with him (and he was so good with her) one day and this happened ...

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5821&stc=1&d=1267812114

So DH made him a little neck guard from an old t-shirt sleeve ;)

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5822&stc=1&d=1267812307

It didn't last long and didn't really help much, it was just funny ;)

Enzo was glad when she started loosing her puppy teeth!

So one night we were up late and the dogs where playing, running around like they always did. Well I was starting to get worried that they were getting too wild ... it happened not long after that thought crossed my mind ... Roxy broke her leg :(

I saw it happen and heard the break; she was running and went to jump on the couch, but jumped from too far and not high enough and hit the front instead of on the couch. I felt so bad! She was crying and tried to bite us; poor thing had to be in pain and freaked out.

DH tried to say maybe it wasn't a break, but I knew it was. I called the emergency vet (it was a Friday I think and after midnight) and we had to muzzle her and take her in.

I held her and tried to keep her little leg straight as we drove; she was shaking and licking me the whole time ... almost like she knew we were trying to help.

They set the leg and referred us to a surgeon; we were all tired after we got back home -

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5823&stc=1&d=1267812727

We had to take her to a specialist that was over an hour away; she had to stay there for a few days. We left her Sat night, then she had her surgery on Monday and we picked her up on Tues. I hated leaving her, but felt good that it was a 24 hour facility, so we could check on her anytime. Enzo was even a little mopey while she was gone.

All this after her only being with us for 2 months; she was just a little over 5 mos old.

Anyway; she came home with a plate in her leg and a soft cast. She was not happy and she whinned a lot for the first couple of day :sorry:

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5824&stc=1&d=1267812989

After a couple of months of being confined, the leg healed ... then she was spayed. Poor thing hated riding in a car for a while cause we were always going to the vet.

The whole ordeal cost a little over $3k; lucky we had gotten vet insurance and got about half of that back in the claim!

Roxy loves me, but she has a much better bond with DH than Enzo does. But they both still listen to me better ;)

Enzo is going to be 5 on June 14th this year and Roxy just turned 4 on Feb 28th.

Here is a recent pic of them together ...

http://forums.onewed.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5825&stc=1&d=1267813331

Enzo is usually fairly calm, but gets excited for play and meal times. Roxy has her hyper moments and is a big whiner; she whines when she wants anything. She is a big barker too; where Enzo only barks when he is spooked or when he is really wanting attention.

They do get on my nerves sometimes, but even kids do that right ;) I do love them though; I can't imagine not having them

Thanks for reading everyone :)

I pray that they stay healthy and we have at least a good 10 years or more with them. I hate to think of a time when they are not with us anymore; sucks that dogs don't live longer :(

This picture cracked me up! It looks like Roxy is teasing Enzo and Enzo is saying, "Mom Roxy is being mean!"

What a great story Brandi! They have such unique personalities don't they? I totally understand getting frustrated with them from time to time, but like you, I can't imagine life without my pack of 4. I will have to dig up some pictures and post a journal too!

Yeah, they do have their own ways about them ... I love them though

Yes, you should do a journal too!

I have recently learned that they both seem to be spooked by the wind ... Enzo will either jump on me like he wants to go back in, or he will just sit and shake. Roxy will either run around like crazy or go back to the garage to let me know she wants to go back in :bblol:
