Hi all
Hopefully there's someone out there that can help me. I bought my dress off EBAY!..not a good idea for anyone contemplating it. I am not happy with the colour of it and as its a vintage design..I wish to change the colour. Has anyone got any idea as to "how?" i could change the colour from cream to more a pale tea colour. I would like to change the shade of colour (without damaging the dress) into a shade that reflects more on the vintage era of the ealry 1900's.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Soak it in tea. Fill the bathtub up with warm water, toss a handful of tea bags in and then put the dress in there until it reaches the color that you want.

I would too!! As I'd be afraid you'd come out smelling like a tea bag and god knows that's not the best scent you want for your wedding day!! ;)

You can check. I know here the most common clothing dye is RIT but I don't know what you can find in Australia. I do know that the tea thing works well and you can easily control how deep the color gets with it.

As for the tea smell you would of course "wash it" by soaking it in a very GENTLE detergent...and lay/hang it flat to dry the tea color would probably fade a bit too once you soak it.
Although....I like the way tea smells and so does Eric...that could be FUN for us LOL!

ok now...you've all givem me the 'courage' to soak my wedding dress in tea dye...one problem?...how does one know if the fabric will take the dye?
The dress is made out of mostly chifron, and l a little lace, & the lining is satin.

It usually depends on the type of material it is. For a fabric to "take" the dye correctly the fibers usually have to be all natural and not synthetic. I've never tried the tea thing, I'm just speaking from the experience of the fabric dyes, but I'm thinking with tea it may be the same way. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I tried to dye a synthetic fabric with RIT dye once and it came out pretty funky looking, the natural fibers work great with them though. Anyway, that's my two cents so I'd just be a little cautious considering the fabrics you're using.

I bought my dress off ebay and although it was described as a light ivory, it is more dark ivory.. I know how you feel about the coloring not being exactyle what you want, but is there anyway you can add beads of a lighter color to your dress and have it personalized that way? I personally love my ebay dress so i wouldnt want an experience like this to deter another bride, it just stinks that your not happy.. best of luck

Don't leave the tea bags in the water !!!! If the dress lays on top of one of them, you'll get a darker stain in one spot. Learned that the hardway with a silk wrap I dyed. The only problem was getting the color to the right stage cause it was a little darker when the sweater dried. Go slow and use a hair dryer to dry one edge to check the color then put it bakck in if it's not dark enough.
Good Luck ! You are alot braver than I am !

Just so everyone knows; this thread is more than a year old and the original poster (and several others) has not been around for more than a year. So it is unlikely she will respond.
I you guys want to talk about dyeing dressing and/or buying off eBay, perhaps it is best to start a new thread on the topic.
