OKay, so this is a minor vent really, but made my FH absolutely crazy today.

The wedding is in 2 weeks, so today we went to the reception venue to make final arrangements for table linens and seating arrangements, to give them an approximate final count, I'm sure you all know the deal.

Before we left to go there (2 hours from where we live), I was rereading the contract because I knew that we were expected to pay some money and I wanted to find out how much. Anyway, it's a good thing that I did, because the contract states that we're only allowed to pay by cash or certified check. I did not know that, and we were planning on paying by the cred. card that we put aside just for wedding arrangements.

So, at 12pm today, when the bank closes at 1... we had to run there and basically take money out of a CD to pay for half of the cost "estimated."

I know that we had read this when we signed the contract, but that was back in Feb, so of course we forgot. NOw, question, is this typical, do you think? Or should I start worryign about the quality of service we're going to be getting at our reception?

(Oh, and just to make matters even better, once we got there, the lady said we didn't have to pay her anything!!! We paid anyway, having gone through all the trouble!)

I have heard one other story like this. Our reception venue accepted credit cards, in fact that seemed to be their preferred form of payment. In your case the only reason I can think of for not accepting credit cards is b/c the cc co. charges the vendor a percentage of the sale for the service and with a wedding reception that fee could get quite large, seriously cutting into their profits esp. if the venue is privately owned.

Best wishes for an awesome wedding!

Usually they will take a credit card. You should have asked her. What they don't like to do is take personal checks because at some time they probably got screwed over by someone writing a bad check for several thousand dollars. I know several of our contracts wouldn't take personal checks on the day of the event for this reason. But I know when I called and asked about it several of them would still take personal checks since they hadn't had a problem working with us over the last year. (These were smaller vendors, florist, photographer, ect.)

Heck, we didn't even get the bill for our reception until we were home from our honeymoon. Of course we are members whose dues and fees come out of our cc account eveymonth so either way, they were getting their money from us.

We asked our venue lady specifically when she needed the money, and she told us that she needed all the money upfront one week before the wedding. She would only be charging us more, if we add to the number when the wedding day comes. And she always takes personal checks from us, every time we make a payment. So that makes it more convenient for us.
