I have a princess cut Tiffany styled solitaire. Oddly traditional for me but I liked the simplicity and cleans lines of it.

I have a round solitaire. I had no idea what I wanted for a wedding band, so I wanted to make sure my e-ring would go with whatever I picked.

A round solitaire. I had originally wanted a 3 stone ring, but my fiance felt very strongly that he wanted only a solitaire. Mostly, because in hindu tradition he is not permitted to get an odd number of stones. Bearing that in mind, I asked for a round stone, because I think the round is truly beautiful, and really stands up to time. Also, any wedding band matches, so that helps.

My E ring is a pear shape diamond solitaire. Very simple, uncomplicated and classic. I just love the fact that my diamond is a different shape than most.

I can sympathize re: trying to find a wedding band match. We searched high and low for mine. Because of pear shape, we had to find a band that wold fit under the extruding pointy end of the diamond. We finally found a band of the right height, with channel set diamonds.

Mine is a three stone ring with accent stones. To me it looks traditional, but others may disagree. I love it either way!

I voted other -- engagement rings aren't something I believe in. It took FH awhile to "get" that no matter how much money he spent on a ring, there is no way I would wear it. And that in fact, it would probably cause me to *not* want to marry him. If I were to go for an e-ring, it would have to be diamond-less, and he would have to wear one too. :p

But I don't think my decision is better/worse than someone else's. (I can't stand those people that get in your face and are all "OMG!!! You allowed little African babies to be maimed so you could wear that diamond!".) It's just my personal decision.

I'm not sure how that reflects on anyone who wears diamonds.....lol...I don't really know where you are coming from I guess to say!

I think she is saying that she can't stand people who say that. She does not believe in them, but does not look down on people who have them nor does she care for people who say things like that statement.

But what do African children have to do with diamonds??? Thats what I am wondering.

I don't know. Maybe it is just one of those statements like some people's mom used to say about not eating your plate of food at dinner. For instance, "Make sure to clean your plate. Do not waiste because all of those little children are starving in Africa."

You're lucky you haven't run into them then! I guess I'm still in school, so I run into a lot of those activist-types on campus. There's been some controversy associated with the diamond industry, especially surrounding the treatment of (especially underaged) mine workers and the fact that the money made from the sale of the diamonds is used to fund warlords that go on to kill and maim innocent people. There are lots of arguments used against diamonds, but these are the most common ones. It's been dealt with by some in the diamond industry -- for example, DeBeers assures its customers that it does not buy "conflict diamonds". Anyway, some people can be really rude killjoys about it, and I think that's totally wrong.

But I still feel there is a valid choice not to have one. It's not a popular choice, and there is an understated sentiment that you're "not really engaged" unless you have a diamond ring on your finger, when there's a lot more to it than that. I think it's a lovely symbol. But that's all it is -- a symbol. (I mean, we've seen some gorgeous rings in this thread, but I highly doubt any of you with rings define your relationship by the ring, right? So even if it weren't there, your relationship still would be just as strong.) I'm not into jewelry, but if I were I might have wanted a ring. We are doing wedding bands, though. Not that we can agree on a style.:bblol: I like seeing everyone's rings anyway -- both traditional, and non-traditional.

I understand now, but I'm pretty sure my diamond didn't do any of those things as it is a Canadian diamond so I have clear sailing here as I don't think Canada is big on child labor! lol Thanks for clearing up what you meant for me though.

Ah, that makes good sense. I don't imagine it *is* a controversy in Canada! Out of curiosity, is there a big trend in Canada to support "homegrown" diamonds? (Like here in the US, there used to be this whole "Made in the USA" movement. But that was before Wal-Mart took hold.:bblol:)

I didnt want an engagement ring either. All I wanted was matching bands. Brian wasnt hearing any of that. I wear jewelry so it wasnt an issue of not wanting to wear it, but I didnt want him thinking he had to buy me an engagement ring. He didnt like the little cheap plain rings I would pick out when he wanted me to look at them, so he went out and looked all by himself. This made him happy, so I left the issue alone.

um I'm not totally sure. I guess it's a big thing because Canadian diamonds are few and far between, so they are higher quality and much more sought after. The cut and clarity to a Canadian diamond is supposed to be high, there for making them more expensive and in high demand.

Mine is a band w several diamonds inlaid in it. The band slightly crosses over another (smaller) solid band. It is petite, sparkles, and I LOVE IT!!!!!

I never new that Canadian diamonds were suppose to be better? My color is an E and my clarity is VS2, and he bought it in NY for a pretty decent price. No starving children i hope from my ring. If anyone ever said a thing to me on the street about wearing such a big expensive ring there might be a problem, there are so many activist about everything it is kinda ridiculous. LOL.
