We thought about having the cake cutting at the church right after the wedding. My mom said that some people want to just see that instead of going somewhere for the whole reception. We might have approx 175 guests. If we had a dessert reception at the church, about how many people would go to a reception hall after that?

Usually, any one who goes to the wedding will go to the recep.

Our cake is at the church and then we are having a formal reception (music and dancing) at another location...we were told to expect about 200 at the wedding and 125-150 at the formal reception...the older people and some of the more conservative fellow church members won't go to the formal reception.

Maybe it is just me, but if it is THAT important for them to see you cut the cake, they can haul themselves to the recption. I have never heard of anyone having to cut the cake at the church so that everyone can see. Now I personally have skipped a lot of ceremonies and been to the reception but never vice versa. If you want to do a causual afternoon cake and punch deal after the ceremony like Ellen, ok. But i have never heard of the cake being cut just at the church.

I thought it was pretty common to have the cake at the church, but maybe I'm kinda behind on times. haha. I've only been to one wedding and it was my aunt's in '90 or '91 and the reception was at the church. I think having a reception at a different location with a dinner and everything is just more modern, but a lot of people do have the cake at the church.

If you are doing a cake and punch reception thing like Ellen then I would say cut there of course, but I wouldn't cut it there just for the sake of cutting it there.

We're having our entire reception at the church. It will be a formal reception, with a sit down dinner, music, dancing, cake cutting, etc. The only thing that we are not permitted to do is serve alcohol, which is fine with Joe and me.
I'm not sure if I would go to the extra expense to just cut the cake at the church and then proceed to a seperate reception hall. You won't be permitted to enjoy that beautiful (and sometimes expensive cake) all though your reception if you have it in a seperate place.

I agree that you should cut the cake where you really want to. If you want to have a dessert and punch type reception at the church and cut it there, then by all means, do so. But, if you are just doing it to appease others, just let them hual there arses over to the reception!!!
