View Full Version : What to do, what to do??

As many of you know, I am in school for library science. By the time I could register for spring semester, there really weren't many classes left at all... the fact that I'm an online student makes it all the more difficult to get classes that I want. I signed up for one that looked useful and only just recently signed up for another (the semester starts tomorrow).

I looked at the syllabus for the first one, and it says that it's not about libraries. As someone that wants to work in a library, that pretty much makes the class useless to me. But then again... with the economy, maybe I would be better off getting some background in other areas of information technology so that I could apply at businesses, as well.

Basically I'm trying to decide if I should just keep the class or if I should e-mail the professor of the class that I really want to take. I filled out a form saying I had interest in the class and e-mailed her last week asking if it was still possible to get into the class, and she never responded. So I don't know if I want to bug her again.... but I would really like to get into the class and not have to take the one that's not about libraries.

I dunno... What would you do?

Well, Eddie thinks I should keep the class because I need electives, and it wouldn't hurt to have background knowledge in all areas. I was even just telling my mom that I'd be applying everywhere that asked for MLIS degrees after I graduated, even if it wasn't libraries. I e-mailed the professor just to make sure I'm not in over my head, taking the class. Hopefully some use comes out of it....

if you REALLY want the other class, I'd send another email just saying "hi, i just wanted to follow up on my email from last week and let you know, if there's room in your class, I'd love to be able to take it" or something...

but it is always a good idea to have a wide breadth of knowledge... i was a science major and took music, english, and economy classes (they were required but still each has helped in its own way besides breaking the monotony of science labs up)

I think it would be a great idea to write a follow up email to the teacher about the other class. It could possibly show him/her that you're really interested and you're showing initiative.

Does the teacher who's class you want to take have office hours where you could stop in and show them you mean business? The fact that you took that initiative may be enough for them to see you are serious and want in that class. I'm not super big on keeping classes I'm not interested in. That is mainly because my attention span is about as short as a peanut! haha BUT it is good to have other things to fall onto. Good luck! :p

I understand wanting more electives, but if you can get into the class you really want to take I'd go for it! :yesnod:

Thanks for the responses. I still haven't heard back from the professor of the class I am signed up for. I'm an online student, so I can't go in during the other professor's office hours. I'm finding it really difficult to have to rely on e-mail communication. I'm really beginning to think that online schooling is not for me.... but I really want this degree, so I'll stick with it. But anyway, I think if I were able to get into the other one, it'd be a $50 late registration fee... so I dunno. I may try e-mailing the professor of the class I want again and see what happens.

I got a response from the professor of the class I want to take. It was actually something she sent to the person that's in charge of enrollment, asking her to get me a permission number so I can enroll! Yes!!! I knew there was a reason I was late in buying books... Hopefully the enrollment person is speedy so I can get the syllabus and everything for the new class. Thank you to everyone that encouraged me to do this... I probably wouldn't have, otherwise.

I'm so glad you got into the class you wanted! There were several times in college where I'd sign up for something just to fill a gap and I'd watch the enrollment for something I really wanted... once in awhile I'd get lucky and someone would drop! It's an exciting feeling--I think you'll be much happier in this one!

Thanks, everyone!! I am now especially glad that I got into the one I wanted because I got a response back about the other class... basically the response was that the class might be difficult and not of much use to me... So keeping the other class would've been a big mistake!

I'm so happy it's all fixed... I was having flashbacks of my undergrad years. I had signed up for a class recommended to me by my advisor, and when I got there, it turned out I hadn't taken the prerequesite.. and then the professor handed out an exercise that pretty much looked foreign to me. Needless to say, I dropped that one, too!
