How many of you out there can drive standard transmission vehicles?

I say not at all, but that is kind of not true! I have tried, I somewhat have the hang of it, but haven't attempted to do so in about........6 years, so not at all, but Pat is going to make me learn!

I basically know how to drive a standard. Justin's truck is a standard and I can drive it if I absolutely have to. I would not be able to drive it in traffic nor could I drive it by myself in the vehicle. It is a diesel so it is not as hard to drive as a Ford Ranger or a standard car is. My dad had a Ford Ranger that was a standard once and I could barely get it to move.

My FH taught me. Since he would never buy an automatic, it was important that I learn to drive his car, just in case and all. I'm not that great at it, and it's hard on my arthritic knees, but I can.

(And I know, arthritic knees so young, but it runs in the family and I've had it since I was 15.)

I can and I rock!! lol. I can drive a stick while taking on my cell phone and switching gears with my elbow!! lol. (And I so shouldn't be proud of that!! LOL) Ok I drove one since I was 17 and have had two cars with a standard (manual transmission). I would kill to get another one but Matthew hates them for some reason. When we move and are making more money again, I'm going to get a go around town kind of car and I am going to insist that it be a manual transmission. I begged Matt to go that route with our new truck but he stead fastly refused. I suppose I see his point that hauling a trailer would be a pain with it, but it could also make it easier. I guess Matt's all about being lazy lol!!! I'm hopefully going to get my class 1 License, this will allow me to drive semi trucks that have 18 gears and I am so stoked about it. I like Brandi, feel like I have more control when I'm switching the gears!! :)

I learned on my dad's turbo charged car that my brother couldn't even drive and he had been driving sticks for a few years before me. Guess I'm just a natural! plus I worked in a garage,so if I didn't know how to drive one, I would have been screwed!! lol

Ok lookit me, I'm babbling!! lol

I can and have for 30 of my years of driving. Now I have an automatic because I'm old and tired of a stick. :)

I learned the hard way. My very first car was a standard. My Dad took me to pick it up and I had to drive it home alone. :bbeek: It really wasn't bad though.

It's your car's transmission.

Do you have to push on the clutch to shift it in gear or does it automatically go in gear and all you have to do is step on the gas and brake?

Hell yeah! I'm freaking awesome at it! My first car was a manual. Usually I drove it around nicely with my FH in the car (when we were first dating) but the one day he said something about that I wasn't able to drive it like a racecar.....boy did I show him. He was very impressed...and then I ended up teaching him how to drive a manual! LOL!

My dad taught me to drive a stick shift when I was 11...I then graduated to my uncles tractor in the field until I was legal for the roads. My first truck was a 5-Speed, so was the car after that!

I can, and aint bad at it, but dont care for it at all. As long as they make automatics, thats what I will drive, and dont care how much gas Id be saving.........

My Dad bought all of us girls standard transmission cars. When Amber was 16, I had a Volkswagon Golf, and I tried to teach her how to drive it. But there is no way Amber will ever be able to drive a shift. She has a major block on that one. My son took to it just like I did when I was 15 years old. But not Amber. So I had to go out and buy an automatic just so Amber could learn how to drive. :D

Remember the mall scene in the first Back to the Future movie?? Where Michael J Fox was in the car? My mom learned how to drive a stick in that parking lot. IT was pretty funny, we were in the back seat, and she couldn't drive up the little hill that was in the parking lot.

Can't at all. I have a hard enough time with the automatic lol!

Yes I can and I must say I am pretty darn good at it! I get full use of the power band and downshift to take tight, fast turns. DH tells me I'm the best woman driver he has ever met. Not that he's being sexist, but he has some friends who race professionally and can maneuver an SUV on 2 wheels (I'm not quite that daring!).

My first two cars were standards, but I could never quite get the hang of it. I could shift once I got going, but getting started was nearly impossible. I guess in an emergency, I could wing it, but haven't actually tried to drive one since I was 14 (I started learning how to drive at 12).

That is how it was for me when I first learned to drive a stick ... I would shake alot at the start and often stall out at stop signs and traffic lights  but I much better these days ;) Been driving a stick for nearly 10 yrs :bbmrgreen:

Only sort of... I've only done it once on a friend's car.... I'm sure I could do it again if I had to.
