Okay, I wasn't quite sure where this should go... but naive little me thought the only songs I had to come up with for a wedding was the first dance  now that I'm getting into it, it seems like there is so much!
Recessional? I don't even know what that is...Processional?? Ugh I'm so confused. Can anybody kinda give me a layout for music, so I know exactly how many songs I need to come up with, and what they are for.
For example, people choose songs for the bouquet/garter toss?!? I had no idea! What else am I missing?
TIA!!

I am just guessing on the this, but I believe the recessional would be the music that you would walk out of the church to once the ceremony is over. And I would assume the processional would be the music that the wedding party would walk into the reception to.
You might want to pick songs for things like the bouquet/garter toss, though if you wish, I'm sure the DJ could choose a song for you there. Maybe for the cake cutting. And like you mentioned, the first dance, possibly one for the whole wedding party to dance to if you do that, and the father/daughter and mother son dance, if you're doing those.
That's all that I can think of right now. I haven't started picking songs for us yet either, except for the first dance. I'm sure I missed something lol
I hope that helped!

Hey Tia! Congrats!! Like you I had no idea how many songs were involved in a wedding. The prelude is the music that will be played while your guests are being seated. The processional is the music that will be played as your bridesmaids then you walk down the aisle. The recessional is the song that is played after you are pronounced husband and wife and make your exit. Of course, you'll also need to decide if you'll have anyone sing or any music played during the ceremony. We aren't choosing to do that...we don't want to draw out the ceremony any longer than necessary.
For the reception you can have a song played as you make your grand entrance as "Mr. & Mrs. So and So" if you want. If not you can just be announced. Then you have the first dance, the father/daughter, mother/son, and if you chose the bridal party dance. You can choose to do a special dance for all married couples which would need a song. You'll need to pick a song for the bouquet toss, garter toss and the cake cutting and if you want, for the last song of the night. Hope this helps...Good luck with your planning!

Thanks for your replies ladies! I'm actually pretty excited about picking out all the music touches and make it more personal. Especially the "grand entrance"...did anyone else do this?? What did you pick?

My fiance is a Superman fanatic. So we are doing one song for our bridal parties entrance and then when we enter we'll be walking in to the "Superman Theme".
haha, sorry it's been a long long time since I've posted on a forum that wasn't for school so I forgot all about the shortcuts. We aren't allowed to use them for my classes.

Our grand entrance song was "Gettin' Jiggy With It." It was great. =)
In terms of bouquet toss, we did Beyonce's "Single Ladies." I let DH pick his garter toss song, and he picked Motley Crue's "Girls, Girls, Girls."
For the ceremony, the bridal party processional was "Claire de Lune" (a personal favorite of mine), and my processional was the very typical "Canon in D." Prior to the wedding, I thought I would poke my eye out before ever walking down the aisle to Canon in D, but I just couldn't find anything better. For our recessional, we used Vitamin String Quartet's version of "At Last." It was beautiful. =)

Haha, we just asked our musician friends to play Here Comes the Bride and whatever else they wanted for the party's processional and recessional in exchange for their hotel room. They actually composed music for us, which was beyond our expectations!
I think nothing beats Here Comes the Bride for your entrance, but I have been to lots of weddings with neat (and often funny and ironic) music instead!
One of my friends had her processional to the Imperial March from Star Wars (you know, the one that plays whenever Darth Vader is there). Another set of friends, who got married right after graduating from university, played Pomp and Circumstance as their processional. I thought it was really cute (and I love Elgar as a composer - his works are so grandiose). Another of my friends decided to bring elements of her culture and her husband's into the ceremony, playing traditional Chinese music (she's Chinese) for the processional and Irish music (he's Irish) for the recessional.
Before our friends agreed to help us, we were originally going to choose some New Age music, since my husband and I both love Enya, Enigma, Maire Brennan, and many others in that genre. It's very pretty music, but non-traditional!
Hope you find these interesting and/or helpful!

Omg, the Star Wars is pretty great I gotta admit lol...but I wouldn't pick it for us.
I'm all about non-traditional and customizing the wedding down to the details, I like it that way.
I will have to try and find something, maybe an R&B song or something to walk down the aisle to
I like how appropriate "Single Ladies" is for the bouquet toss, but geez I HATE that song...does anyone have any other suggestions??

This is a list of the most requested songs from my DJ Company:
http://www.bandstandmusic.djintelligence.com/music/requested.asp
It's broken down by categories like bouquet and garter toss, first dance, father/daughter dance, cake cutting, intros, etc... I found it very helpful in my music planning!

I haven't decided most of our music yet. We're big classic rock people, just to warn you... lol
All the ceremony music will be Vitamin String Quartet covers of classic rock music, mostly the Beatles, but also other bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, etc. Our first dance will be to (the real version, not a cover) Thank You by Led Zeppelin. We're not doing garter/bouquet toss, but if we were to have a garter toss song would definitely use Legs by ZZ Top.

What a shame you don't live in Norfolk UK. I would have gatecrashed your Wedding. Nothing beats a good Rock Wedding IMO. ;)
We had Black Stone Cherry playing as i walked in. Our Witness and some of the Guests were in the UK's top AC/DC Tribute Band. So we had a jamming session at the Reception.

I listen to mostly hip-hop, but I LOVE the good classic rock as well. I'm very well-rounded when it comes to music lol.
I haven't really decided if we are going to do the garter toss, but my initial thought for that was "Sharp Dressed Man" ZZ Top. Legs is great too!
I keep hearing stuff about the Vitamin STring Quartet, where do you find their stuff?? Is it just rock that they do?

Check out a Band called "The Planets". They have an album out called "Classical Graffiti".
They are a Classical Band who rock it up a bit. I saw them Touring with Deep Purple in 2002. They captivated the entire DP Audience. And sold quiet a few albums after the show.

Here's the link to Vitamin String Quartet. You can hear clips of most songs, and if you have iTunes you can search through there to listen to clips of all the songs.

And the lyrics for Legs would be hilarious (at least to me...). "She's got legs, she knows how to use them"... :lafhard:
