I have a few questions about registering... FH and I are going through and seeing what we have and what we dont. The checklists we have from Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond are helpful but there are a lot of things we dont need or we're not sure of the quantity.

We're going to be moving into a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. How many sets of towels should we register for? I know we'll be expecting guests a lot and they will use the second bathroom while the other bathroom is our master bathroom.

We also dont know how many place settings to register for with our everyday dishes. I know we need more cups than anything because we go through those like mad.

Also how many sets of sheets should we get for each bedroom? I was thinking 2 for the guest bedroom and a few for the master bedroom but I'm not sure. I wanted to get a light sheet set for summer and a heavier set for winter... I'm just not sure.

Can you ladies help me???

My rule of thumb is one in use one in the wash...get enough towels to get you thru a week and some to use while the others are being washed, same with sheets one on the bed one in the wash/clean in the linen closet...I would go with 2 sets for each bedroom and 2 sets of heavy ones to alternate between in the winter.

16 towels
4 sheet sets
2 winter sheet sets

I was thinking about how much of everything we have or had when we got together. I believe we have about 6-8 sheet sets. That way two can be waiting to be washed and we still have clean sheets for our bed and if we have guests. My opinion is that if you like a sheet set at the store register for it. If you end up registered for 10 sheet sets so be it, at least your guests will have a large selection to choose from! As far as towels, we registered for six sets of towels but there again, sometimes you need a lot of towels (something freakish might happen and you may need to clean up a sopping mess some place!) or you may find the towels you have go unused. But in the future you'll always need a lot of towels. SO here is my advice, register for what you like! Just because it's on the list does not mean that you will get every thing on there! And hey if you find you've got too much of something, that's why these places have a return policy in place!! :)

I find that mostly bath towels and washcloths are the most used, the hand towels get hung by the sink and I change them out every 2-3 days or as needed.

I also have what Eric calls the "not for use" set...they get hung on the towel bar on the wall and they are there to compliment the decor and to make the bathroom pretty! We have a set (2 bath, 1 hand, 1 washcloth) of towels that have "V" on them and some that have the "lodge look" set that matches the bathroom decor. You might want to register for a couple of "not for use" sets too...

Wow ladies Thanks!!! I'll be registering in 3 different stores so I'll register for some sheets in each place or at least 2 of those places.

I really believe that you can never have enough towels. I know my parents always buy cheap towels that they dont care if they get messed up for things like big spills, drying and cleaning off the dog, and cleaning up flood water (our basement floods a lot). So that might be something I would think about. We might get a set of do not use towels for our guest bathroom because that will be the "common" bathroom when we have company and I'll switch them out when we have overnight guests.

As for sheets, I know that I like to change sheets out all the time so lots of sheets is a must. I think I'll just stick with a light and heavy sheet set for the guest room since we probably wont have anyone stay fro more than a week.

Any other ideas for things that arent traditional to register for or something that is a must have that you might overlook when registering?

Extra pillows?? I'm anal when it comes to pillows. i don't like sharing my pillow and when I go to my parent's or inlaws I take my own pillows. Can't stand the thought of sleeping on someone else's druel!!! YUCK! but definately if you don't have guest pillows, you might want to consider getting some of those. As well, tea towels or dish towels might be soemthing you could over look. And I way over looked COOK BOOKS. now I wish I had thought to register for some of them. I had to go out and buy them on my own.

Cook books is something I never would have thought of. I also wouldnt have thought of extra pillows. We have so many pillows, but I think we'll need new ones.

As for dish towels, that is something that I cannot live without. My parents hardly ever use them but I do all the time. That was the first thing on my list!! :bblol:

What about trash cans and laundry hampers?? Those are things that you need but do you register for them??

I'm really scared of seeming greedy when we register. I dont want to seem that way because I'm not. We almost have nothing to start out with because we're both coming from our parents homes and only have a few things that we've accumulated over the years that are worth keeping.

i wouldn't think of it that way! I'd think of it as giving your guests choices! (and letting them know exactly what you need!) Now greedy would be if you sent a little note in each invitation telling them that they HAD to buy EVERYTHING off your registry! Do not even worry about that kind of thing. Most people know that it is not required to bring a wedding gift in the first place and most realize that it's nicer to get somethign you need and want rather then get something you won't use! (Believe me I got a few of those and these decorative dishes just sit around collecting dust!!)

My family has already given me so much stuff thats going to just collect dust. I know I'll be getting more as time goes on. I'm trying to decide what to do with them all because we arent going to have room for it but if we dont have it in our home then my grandmother and other people who gave it to us will pitch a fit about it...

Trust me, follow the one year or season rule. This holds true unless you are talking about a family heirloom. If you don't put it out, use it, or wear it within a year or two seasons (say winter clothes) than it goes to Goodwill. If they want to pitch a fit about it, they can store it at your house. I cannot stand clutter! If I can't use it or don't like it, I don't keep it around just to take up space and cause me extra time dusting. People will have to get over it and accept that you can't use every little trinket or bauble that they give in the course of your life.

They are mostly family heirlooms or really nice things that have a lot of meaning behind them. I might decide to keep some at my parents house until we move into a bigger place (we plan to when we decide to get a dog or start having children). I just dont think there's a lot of space for all of that with a 2 bedroom apartment.

We registerd for a gas grill, a tent, a volleyball set (you have to know us...) and an Entertainment Armoire (for the TV, DVD, CD Changer, Surround Sound and Eric's prize PS2!)

Whatever you need is what you register for in my neck of the woods! City folks may be more refined but I need it and I'd rather 2 or 3 people go together and get us something we will use rather than 2-3 things we won't!:bbmrgreen:

We got most of the stuff that we registered for. I recommend on top of all of that, you get a set of everyday dishes and drinking glasses. Plus, if you like wine, get a set of everyday red and white wine glasses, any barware that you might need, a welcome mat, lamps, and decoration items for the house. Make sure you register for GOOD cookware and GOOD knives. It is better to just pay the money for them now and have them for years than to be unhappy in the kitchen and always replacing the cheap stuff that doesn't last.

I think that although there are standard sheets that we used as well from bed bath and beyond and target, we did our own thing. Everyone's needs are different, so you should put down what you think you will need.
