View Full Version : Hypoglycemic? Or? Who knows...
Today, I had a granola/peanut bar for breakfast at 7am. Around 9 I had some smarties (candy), and at 10:30 Matt and I went to lunch. I had a veggie sammie from Quiznos at about 10:40. by 10:50, I was shaking and had a mean hot flash going on. It lasted intensely for about 15 minutes, then about around noon I had another granola bar because I was exhausted and couldn't keep my eyes open.
Well, needless to say, I'm still a little jittery (7 hours and dinner later).
Around 1:30, I went to a friend of mine at work who is a diabetic. I started telling him what happened and he told me to roll up my sleeve. He used his blood sugar meter, poked me, and checked my blood sugar. I was at an 87. He was concerned because he said after eating such a short time ago, it should be way higher. Plus, when I went in and got my blood tested about a year ago I was at an 88 after fasting for 12 hours.
So... I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just any tips and ideas how to control my blood sugar in the meantime.
I've contacted my doctor's office and she's out until the end of November. (Actually, I contacted my OB on accident as I had her mixed up with one of the subs I've seen before - OOPS!). However, I will be contacting my doctor tomorrow to see if they'll order blood work without seeing me.

Hope everything's ok!

as a teen/young adult I was hypoglycemic, to be honest 88 isn't really AWFUL.... even if you did eat a short while ago, i know i started feeling the jitters around hi 60's low 70's but maybe everyone's different? if i got below 60 i had to sit w/my head b/w my knees to keep from passing out while someone got my some sugar... much below that n the lights were out n shortly thereafter i was on the ground LOL
[the only reason i know these numbers tho is i was working in a doctor's office at the time and would test my blood sugar when i was experiencing symptoms to monitor... i didn't carry a monitor n stick myself or anything... ]
it's a terrifying feeling to go thru, espcially when u get to the can't see, know ur gonna pass out but waiting to go down point... UGH i'm having flashbacks LOL
best thing to do when ur feeling the jitters is to eat something like umm peanut butter, a slice of cheese are like the best options... if your feeling like you're gonna pass out, then go for more simple sugars, like orange juice or just plain ole sugar if its all u got... whatevers around... (i would always keep a roll of life savers in my purse for emergencies)
another tip is to eat small meals at shorter intervals... i would have to eat something every 4 hours to avoid the jittery feeling at my worst
hmm what else... when you go into the doc u may want to get ur vitamin b levels checked... if i remember correctly for some that can be a culprit of hypoglycemia...
i still get the jittery feeling every once and awhile but it's not as bad anymore... for me it was gaining some weight and having a healthier diet that really straightened my blood sugar out...
i still find tho if i go for a long stretch w/eating a real crappy diet i'll have periods of hypoglycemia... and i can't really skip meals at all... i'm able to delay eating more than when i was younger but if i go long time i find i can sometimes panic myself into an attack worrying about my sugar LOL

I was gonna say the same thing: Eat more often, smaller meals and snack every few hours. Peanut butter is pretty good for you! Gives you lots of extra protein.
