I dont know if i'm violating all the rules by not being already married but I have a question.

After an exhaustive google search, I've decided that nobody has thought of a wedding band made entirely of a certain gemstone, or its impossible to make. I've decided recently to ask her to marry me and I cant imagine handing her a big hunk of yellow gold, even white gold seems not her. I thought it would be better if i were to come up with a wedding band made entirely of onyx and I have yet to find a place that carries them or even hints to their existance.

Am I completely off base by looking for this....I think it would be a really awesome surprise but i dont know where to look.

first off, you are not alone not being married yet, there are many brides here still planning ... so WELCOME!

If you want a solid Onyx ring, I would go to a custom jewlry maker and ask if that is even possible. I have no idea ... I have an Onyx and Titanium ring that I LOVE, but I need to have it sized.

Anyway, good luck to you!

This is the closest to a solid onyx ring I found ...

Custom is the way I would go. If my fiance hadn't picked out exactly what I wanted, I would have probably have tried to steer him towards custom jewelry. I'd go to an independent jeweler and ask him if it's possible and who he'd recommend for the job. Good luck!

You will have to find an independent jeweller who is willing to do custom work. But, I don't know if I would go that route. Onyx isn't a metal so that means it is malleable. So while it might fit perfect now, if her ring size changes, she won't be able to have the ring resized later.

That is a good point, I hadn't thought about that.

I think a custom ring is a wonderful idea! Your idea is very unique, but I would really consider what Lacey said about not being able to resize it. If you are looking for unique why not consider a different stone than the typical diamond. Or you could even do a pink diamond. I have even seen engagement rings with the bride's birthstone. There are lots of choices out there. I would defiantely talk to a custom jeweler! Good luck!

Welcome to the Board and Congratulations!
We are always here to help! The women had some great ideas, I totally agree w/ them. Lacey did have a good point, you may want to consider that tip though. I hope you find someone to do it @ a reasonable price, let us know what happens! :)
