I am selecting music and musicians for my wedding. This is especially difficult for me because I am a musician and I'm majoring in it... It may seem like its easier but its sooo much harder. Usually people pick songs that are well known and that are really popular, but I know too many songs for my liking and I also know what they mean or what they were written for.
For example:

The very popular "O mio babbino caro" by Puccini from Gianni Schicchi is one of the most popular songs for the interlude (middle of ceremony) music. The songs title means "Oh dear daddy" and here is the translation:

Oh dear daddy
I love him, he is so handsome
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the ring
Yes, yes, I want to go there
And if my love were in vain
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno
I fret and suffer torments
Oh God, I would rather die
Daddy, have pity, have pity

Basically the girl wants to marry her boyfriend but her father is trying to make her marry someone else... she's pleading with him to marry her boyfriend.

I couldnt use this song, like I wanted to before, because I know too many of my guests know what it means either from my program notes at my recital or because they have studied this song.

I'm also having a hard time with live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour. I feel enormous pressure to select music that is appropriate for the event but most of the music I love, has meanings that dont seem appropriate. None of the music has words but the instrumental music has as much meaning as the vocal music too.

Sorry this is so long, I'm hoping that maybe you ladies could offer some type of suggestions or comments.

I used that piece and half of my guests spoke Italian. I didn't care, it is a beautiful piece. If you look in my journal there are the music selections I used for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and recorded music I requested from my dj.

They didnt say anything? Thats good to hear because 2 of my bridesmaids are voice majors and they have both made a big deal about me not using that song for my wedding because its not appropriate. I really love it... There are a couple of other instrumental pieces that I'm questionable about too but I think I can find something else...

I love "O mio babbino caro." I sang it my first semester of college and had already really liked it, but after I sang it, I loved it. So if I'm going to use it, I have to find someone to sing it.

I used it and no one said a word. Mainly because most people are smart enough to not say anything to my.
