View Full Version : Weird ovulation timing

So some of you ladies might still remember me from when I got married 2 years ago, and I've posted a few times in the last few months regarding this decision. Well, we have finally decided to start TTC!! It's very emotional, both good and bad, but now that we are serious about it, I've started paying way more attention to things than I did before.

I have researched on the internet, but I kind of wanted some of your opinions, since many of you are going through or have gone through this before. So here is the situation.

I haven't charted or done anything to prepare for this, other than began to take some vitamins. And since we were really hoping for it to happen in September, I decided to buy an ovulation test. The first day of my last period was 9/7, but I didn't get a positive ovulation test until this past friday, 10/2, which was like day 26. That made my next period due on 10/4 (and I'm usually fairly regular, within a day or 2 usually.) Well I still haven't started, and other then some cramping I haven't had any symptoms like I usually have before I start, like light spotting or anything. I've been having very mild cramps that don't feel like my typical period cramps on and off since Saturday.

So how long should I wait to take a pregnancy test? Everything I have read says about at least a week after ovulation or a missed period. I know it probably won't be positive, since I just ovulated, but at what point do I consider my period late? I was hoping to wait until at least this next weekend, but do you think even that's too soon?

I know I'm probably not pregnant, and I'm trying super hard not to get my hopes up, but my husband is so excited it's hard to not be! That's another reason I decided to come back here. I know you girls will be supportive no matter what happens, and will also be a voice of reason when everybody around me is too excited to be realistic.

i'm not an expert yet but if you O'd on 10/2, AF shouldn't be due for 2 weeks then... unless i'm misunderstanding what you're saying... if i got it right you should test 2 weeks after you O'd (hence the term 2 week wait)

That's whats weird about it. If that's the case, this cycle would be like 40 days or something. So I think I just ovulate really late. And I have no idea what that means for TTC. I think that's what has me so confused and anxious, b/c it's not typical so everything I read doesn't really apply.

So it sounds like you O'd really late! I'd say still test 2 weeks after a +O and if AF doesn't arrive that's a good sign too!

Good to see you back!!!

Hmm well i know my gyn said that normal cycles can go up to 40ish days but if u are generally getting AF sooner and ur O'ing 2 days before AF i would think thats not good for TTCing b/c the egg wouldn't have much time to implant... now mind u thats based on my memory of female reproduction from bio classes waaay back in the day... so i could be wrong... i'll step back n let some of our TTC experts who are sooo much more knowledgeable than i chime in

ok so weird ?...is it possible your preggo already and maybe the OPK picked up that instead of O'ing? just my 2 cents worth

well unless you have a 28 day cycle and ovulate right in the middle then your period isn't late. It doesn't matter how long the overall cycle is (well it does but ..) your period arriving isn't based on the start of you cycle, it is based on when you ovulate. So if you ovulated late and on cycle day 26, your period isn't due until cycle day 40. Af arrives 2 weeks after ovulation regardless of when cd 1 was.

That all makes sense, and thank you so much for the input!

And I guess it could be possible that I am already pregnant, but I doubt it. We started trying in August, but I had a visit from AF, and it was more than just spotting. I think I will probably take a test no sooner then October 17. That would be 2 weeks since I O'd, so we will see what happens! I will keep you all updated, and I'm sure I will have more questions!

Okay, so to say I've been bit by the baby bug may be an understatement. I can't quit researching, thinking about it, etc.

And I know that you all are just going to say that I should go take a HPT, but I need someone to tell me that b/c I'm nervous. Is it possible that I O'd at the correct time of the month, around day 14, and I am actually late? I had CM around that time, and one morning I had a faint line on the OPK, but since at the time I thought I was supposed to test in the morning, I didn't test again. Then maybe the positive reading I had last weekend was detecting an early pregnance LH surge. I never had any CM at all with the positive test. Does that make sense? Am I grasping for straws? It's okay to say that I am lol! I tend to get stuck on topics until it's resolved. I'm not good at not knowing. Thanks for listening ladies! I counted on this board for so much while I was planning my wedding and am glad that you all are still just as welcoming now!

I'm probably going to start as soon as I post this, just b/c that's how my life works, but in the 12 or so years I've been getting a visit from AF, I've only skipped it 1 time, and have always been very regular. I know I'm only 4 days late, but it's just not normal for me. If I weren't trying to get pregnant, I would still be worried about it b/c it's unusual. I can't come up with any reason that I would be stressed or anything that would cause me to be late.

Well, how many times have you used the OPK's? The + OPK is only if the line is as dark or darker than the control line - according to some of the research done around her. So technically, if all was normal as far as Oing goes, you could be late for AF... right? How late?

(sorry, I didn't re-read everything).

This is the first month I used them, but I bought like a pack of 20 or 30 (I can't remember) And I used them all, and was only testing twice a day for like 3 or 4 days towards the end of the pack. Then I bought a pack of 7 and used all but 1. The last one I used was positive, which was taken in the late afternoon after having gotten a faint line that morning. I know that it has to be as dark or darker than the control, but if I was only testing once a day, it's possible I missed the positive. According to a 28 day cycle, I am 4 days late w/no signs whatsoever. I usually don't consider my first day until I have a consistent flow and I usually spot a day or so before. I am also almost always within a day of the 28 days. Like I was supposed to start Sunday, and if I had started Monday or first thing Tuesday morning, I wouldn't have though anything of it.

Yeah, seriously go POAS already. :)

pregnancy can mess up OPK results and if you were using the OPK's first thing in th morning you might have missed you LH surge.

I know I know I wasn't much help. I would think if you're *usually* on a 28ish day cycle, a sudden 40 day cycle wouldn't make much sense unless you've done something drastic like switched b/c pills (which you're not on) or something like that.

That's whats been bugging me. It just doesn't make sense. I was going to try to wait until this weekend, but I'm not sure I can!

LOL he does know. I'm terrible at keeping secrets like this! My MIL even asked us the other night if we were going to like plan some kind of surprise to tell her. I said I would love to be able to do something fun like that, but I doubt either of us will be able to keep it to ourselves! I guess we just like to share our happiness with the people around us :)

Hehe - we're the same way. Although I'm hoping to play it off when I do get a :bfp:

You so gotta let us know when you test!

So I took a HPT tonight and it was

:bfp: POSITIVE!!!!!!!:bfp:

I think I'm in shock. I was so sure I wasn't, but now that I am I don't know what to say! I'm going to call the doctors tomorrow, but now we have an insurance issue to deal with. I can't get on my husbands until the end of the month and I HAVE to get on his insurance b/c mine doesn't cover maternity. I'm not sure if this counts as a pre-existing condition and can keep me from being coverd. Even still it won't cover me until January, so I'm not really sure how this is going to work until then!

Thanks for the support ladies!

He was there with me. We had just started trying and I think he was more excited then me, just b/c there is a lot going on my life and I was scared to actually make that commitment. I would have loved to have surprised him but I'm TERRIBLE at keeping this kind of stuff a secret! We couldn't even wait to tell our parents, we called them at like 11 p.m. last night and woke them up!

First of all....CONGRATS!!!!!!!

What I would do regarding the insurance thing, if you are already covered under your insurance with no gap in coverage you should be able to go onto your husbands without a problem....check with his H/R.

Thanks Dani!!

I can get on his insurance b/c open enrollment is this month, but it won't be effective until January. We called them a few months ago when we started talking about starting a family, and thats what they told us to do. Getting pregnant doesn't qualify as a life changing event (although I think it should!) but having a baby does, so upon delivery the baby will be automatically covered. I have called a couple of places and so far all of the options have been about the same-$1000 initially, which should cover me until January, then it will be applied to my insurance deductible. I'm still looking at all my options, though.

I too am pregnant (15 weeks), and have been calling my dr and the hospital just so I know what is covered under my insurance. So far, about $950 I will have to pay to my doctor as I have not met my deductible...and probably another $500 for the delivery...not to mention what the baby is going to cost me! YIKES! It's overwhelming, especially when I am only being paid 4 weeks maternity leave, the rest will probably be used out of my vacation time...then who knows, as we get 12 weeks off for the FMLA. ugh.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

And yes, it is overwhelming. I try not to think about it, but sometimes it just creeps in. I'm actually finishing up school next semester, so I will be student teaching, which means no paycheck for 4 or more months, then I will be giving birth, God willing, so that means even more months with no paycheck. We have some in savings, but I'm not sure how exactly we are going to make ends meet next year. Oh well, we decided that if we waited until the "right" time, it was never going to happen. It will work out, somehow!
