Has anyone else read it? Any thoughts? Did you make any changes to your diet?

I wouldn't really recommend it per se. It's basically vegan propaganda disguised as a diet book, however there were a few good points in the book and I've made some changes in my diet.

1) We don't need as much meat as we eat. It is on the top of the food pyramid which I think makes people eat more. The serving sizes are actually quite small. So I'm changing the portions of meat I eat each day and will also switch to cage free and hormone free as much as possible.

2) No more coffee. I don't need it.

3) No artificial sweeteners. DH's yogurt had splenda in it, and most gum has aspertame, so no more gum I guess. The authors are against white sugar because in most cases it's bleached with animal bones, but seriously i'm not going to spend hours and hours shopping just so I can find bread sweetened with evaporated cane juice instead of sugar...

4) When buying packaged items I'm reading the ingredients list. I already knew about trans fats in disguise, but know I want to avoid all the chemicals and junk put into things when they aren't needed.

5) I'm going to buy whole grains when I can.

6) The snacks around the house are not going to be loaded up with chemicals, they will be more natural.

Things I don't plan on changing:

1) I'm not becoming vegan.

2) I'm not going to only buy organic fruits and vegetables.

I have not read (or even heard of) the book, but I started reading labels a lot more in recent years. I try to stay away from stuff with lots of chemical preservatives (especially BHA and BHT), trans fats and sodium.

Hubby and I have been trying to eat more vegetables and salad greens (instead of just iceberg lettuce) more recently too. I have been buying more fruit and nuts as snacks aw well. Of course I still have to have chocolate and ice cream every now and then too ;)

Of course I would like to loose some weight, but all this is mostly just to be healthier.

But we still eat good stuff, I just make more stuff myself these days rather than buying pre-made, or I will look for the best pre-made.

So I don't remember reading about BHA and BHT... what are those? Now I've started to become way more curious about things put into packaged foods...

So I don't remember reading about BHA and BHT... what are those? Now I've started to become way more curious about things put into packaged foods...I didn't read the book, I just mentioned it in my quest to read labels and buy better stuff.

BHA and BHT are chemical preservatives that are thought by some to be potential carcinogenic. It can be in any food that contains fat; cereal, candy, gum, even bread, crackers and snack mix and some vitamins ... and dog food too.

The issue whether they are safe or not is debatable (look it up, you will find lots of stuff pro and con); ultimately any ill affects would be an accumulation over time thing, like if you ate something with it everyday sort of thing. But I try not to buy stuff with it if I can get away with it.

Right. I was sort of typing to myself, more like I was kind of surprised I didn't pick up that info from the book...

Thanks for the info! Now I'm off to do reasearch :)
