So for those of you that don't wear makeup that often, how often do you buy new stuff? Does it like go bad?
I know like with liquid foundation (which I don't use) it may get gross, but what about powder, eye shadow, blush and eye/lip pencils?
I don't usually wear makeup, but the stuff I have, I have had for years. I think I am sort of allergic to the eyeliner cause every time I put it on it makes my eyes water for a few minutes after.

I know for sure that mascara is supposed to be thrown away every three months -- I'd assume the same for eyeliner, since the purpose is to avoid causing any infections in the eye.
I don't wear makeup that often and I don't wear a whole lot when I do put it on, so I'm probably not as good about replacing stuff as I should be. I just hate to throw away something barely used!
I usually stay within 3-6 months on eye makeup, and other powders and stuff I'll replace about once a year, unless I happen to need more sooner.

The makeup police would haul me off to eyeshadow jail if they saw what kind of stuff I'm hoarding away! :boggle: I just don't wear makeup all that often, but I guarantee there are some lipsticks and eyeshadows in there that have been around for a good ten years. And I really don't see any need to chuck them either.

I may need to get some new stuff soon; I just hate to spend the money. I probably need to look for some hypoallergenic makeup for sensitive people ... probably costs more though :p

I throw it out when it's gross - I rarely wear it, and frankly, I've yet to be sick wearing old mascara or what have you. I'm not saying that you should model yourself after me... just that I'm Gwen's cell mate ;)

Funny you should ask. Here are some guidelines:
Lipstick-get rid if it changes smell or consistancy
Eyeliner, Mascara, Eyeshadow-3-6 mos
Blush-1 yr.
Foundation-1 yr.(sooner if it has a strange odor)
Pressed Powder- 6mos-1 yr
Do I follow this?

Yeah I guess I need to throw it all out and get new then ;)

I usually just use it and use it until it is eventually gone. It takes a really long time though. I hardly wear eyeshadow so the stuff that I do have has been in my make up back for a really long time! Like on What Not to Wear when she goes through everyone make up... haha!
Has anyone heard of ELF Cosmetics? You can order it online and it is only $1 for most of it. They have some all natural make up for a couple dollars more. I have never used it but a woman I work for uses it and swears by it!

I have seen that elf site before and meant to try to order some stuff there; thanks for the reminder :)

It's so easy to keep stuff just because it looks okay, which I know is bad, but I'm sure everyone's got something as old as they are!! ; )
Good tip is not to "pump" the mascara wand in & out the tube too much because it dries it out.
Always wash your make-up brushes at least once a week - you'll notice that your make-up (powder & blusher) will go on a lot easier.
Throw away your foundation if it starts to separate, as this is a sure sign it's gone off. Failing that, the smell should be another clue! ; )
To be on the safe side, just go to your nearest MAC counter & buy the lot!!!! :laugh2:

I'm really bad about makeup. Not so much with foundation, but eyeshadows and lip gloss....I swear, I still have some stashed from freshman year of HS...which was the first year my mom allowed me to ever wear makeup!
I do change my mascara and eyeliner on a regular basis after getting a nasty eye infection that the doc said was probably caused by one or the other.
And I've had my new set of brushes since last Oct and washed them for the first time 2 weeks ago. Yeah....like I said...bad!
