View Full Version : Ripped my nail off...

I ripped my left hand pinky nail off. We talked to DH and I were messing around as we do best, and my acrylic nail hit the rim of his steel-toe work boot and just ripped off. Its still attached at the back, bled a little bit and hurts sooo bad. We talked with a nurse in the ER, just in case and she said I didn't have to go in as long as its attached.
Has anybody done this or have any recommendations as to what worked for them or somebody else? We got the recommendations from the nurse, but I'm just curious to hear if anybody has at home remedies for soothing pain?

Oh! Ouch Jeanne! :( I don't have any ideas for you, but I do have some sympathy to share!

I have been right where you are. I was wearing acrylic nails and my gym bag slipped out of my hand and ripped my pinky nail off (but it was still attached at the base). I almost ended up dying from this stupid incident and I spent 3 days in the hopsital. I think it was because it happened at the gym where there is a lot of germs...I dont want to scare you..just keep an eye on it.
I went to the ER right away and they just taped it down. After 3 trips back to the ER I finally went to my dr. I was sent right to the er right away (I did this in Scottsdale now I was back home in Tucson). They were afraid I might lose my finger and I had red spirals going up my arms...I had a blood infection. They never gave me antibiotics. I ended up getting IV antibiotics for a few days before being released from the hosptial. They also removed the fingernail too.
I can sympathize with you as I have a high tolerance for pain (I have broken legs and walked on it for a day before it was casted) and I can tell you it hurt really really bad. I was taking percocet and it still hurt Iit feels like shoving bamboo underneath your fingernails...ahhh). I almost killed a nurse in the hosptial because he said you are in here just for your little pinky. If it hurts really bad I would go to your dr...I would go anyway just to have them look at it.
I feel for you and wish you the best. ;)
Any no more acrylic nails for me...kinda feel stupid saying I almost died from them :boggle:

Oh wow, thank you for sharing that! I cannot believe how much pain I was in last night and even this morning its still throbbing and its starting to get really tender. DH wants me to go to urgent care, but I don't want them to take off the band-aid off and I don't want to go by myself.
You know, and now that I'm thinking about it, the fact that I did it on his work boot, makes me wonder about bacteria too. Ugh. The kicker is we are leaving tonight to drive 6 hours to my parents house.
I agree, I'm never having these stupid nails ever again.

Sounds like it hurt; I'd go to the Dr to make sure it is not going to get infected.
Hope it gets better soon!

I ripped my acrylic pinkie off too!! i trapped it in a door lol! it does hurt super bad!!! i just ran cold water on it to ease the pain and put a plaster over it to stop any nasties getting in there, but i did go to the nail salon and they put some anti fungal stuff on it which made my eyes water but it never got infected lol!!!
you are just going to wait for it to grow now so u can have ur pinky back lol! bless hope its not hurting too bad xxxx
Aw shucks Jeanne - that HURTS. I had acrylics when we were wheelin once - BAD IDEA!!!!!
I'd say ice it - It'll still hurt (from being frozen) but it should take some of the pain away. I hope it feels better! Have a good time at your folks'!

Ouch, ouch, ouch!! I'm so sorry this happened to any of you. It sounds terribly painful.
Getting medical treatment while on the road is never fun or easy. I agree- go have it checked out before leaving. Maybe they will prescribe an antibiotic proactively, just to be safe.

Thanks ladies! I am leaving work early, going home and packing the car up, and DH is going with me to urgent care before we leave. I can't handle going myself. Like I said, I'm pretty tough when it comes to pain..but this...not so tolerable!

I think its a good idea to go to Urgent Care, especially for any anti-bacteria medicine. Good Luck hun, I hate Urgent Cares too.

Oh, owwwie! :( That sounds really painful! It's good that you're going to urgent care. They will take the band-aid off, and although it will hurt, my guess is that they'll put some anti-bacterial on it and probably give you some to reapply if they have to remove the nail. Good news is they will numb up your finger if they have to take the nail, so you won't feel anything for awhile at least. You might get some pain meds too if it's really hurting.
(DH has to remove nails all the time at work, and this is the most common thing he does. Not saying it *is* what they'll do, but just a good guess.)
Either way, good luck and fast healing!

Thanks Tara for telling me all of that! It does help me get a better idea of what they will do, or might do. Quite honestly, I almost hope they take the nail off if they are going to numb it, that way I won't have to do it myself. :bbconfused:

I did go to the doctor before we left on Thursday. I saw a nurse, well 3 actually. They all thought the story on how I got my nail ripped off was funny, but didn't do anything for me. They looked and it and said there was nothing they could do and never answered my questions about the pain, numbness or anything. They just keep saying that I should keep it wrapped up and change the band-aids every day and keep re-applying neosporin.
They did say that it MAY re-attach itself (since its still semi-attached), or its going to fall off. :gurn:
It sucks because I have to put a lot of band-aids on as well as tape for added protection, Dan said it looks like I have a mini-club on my finger. Its hard to type but I'm getting pretty darn good at it considering I can only use 9 fingers!
well, at least there's hope that it'll reattach itself. And they have a good point. My mom's fingernails have come off from being smashed too many times (she works a ranch)... and she's to the point where 2 of them won't even grow back. So I guess it's a good thing that they didn't remove it.
In the meantime, does it still hurt?

Yeah it hurts, not like a throbbing pain like the days immediately following it incident, but its really sore and tender to the touch.

Well, I'm glad it's better than it was. I hope that it re-attaches and grows out normally!
