What is the deal with words that have silent letters?

Knife, pneumonia, debt, gnome, etc ...

It's to frustrate us and make us come up with stupid mnemonic :winktongue: devices to remember how to spell them all...

We have been playing Scattergories lately and sometimes I find myself trying to remember if this word or that word has a silent letter at the beginning of it. Annoying!

I feel ya! I lost a spelling bee because of the word GEODE.

I'm a dork - I forgot the E on the end and I knew it when I wrote it, I just couldn't bring it to mind in time. UGH!

Haha. I always ask DH that question. Like "knee". How hard would it be to just call it a "nee"?

No kidding - it's like looking at a foreign language and wondering who thought up that scribble.

Well, I'm sure they think the same about our language LOL.

Stupid silent letters! If they want to be part of the word they should just speak up. :yesnod:
