So for the last week or so I have noticed this weird smoke smell off and on. It is most commonly at night, but there is no smoke around. I don't smoke, nor does DH and we are the only ones here.

I smell it now, but it is much more faint that it was last night.

Last night it was pretty bad, like there was a dirty ash tray under my nose or I was sitting in front of a smokey camp fire or something. It was giving me a headache and making me a little nauseous. It didn't matter if I put my hand over my nose/mouth, breathed through my nose or my mouth, the smell was still there. And of course on top of that I was sneezy and a little stuffed up.

I looked up the symptom online and found a couple of medical advice forums where other people talked about the same thing and it being related to allergies and sinus issues and/or drug, could be herb or vitamin side affects. Some said it was an environmental sensitivity thing (several people mentioned dryer sheets) ... a couple of people even suggested it was neurological and/or a stress thing.

Anyway; I found lots of similar stories, but nothing on treatment.

I do have allergies and sinus issues sometimes because of them. I don't take vitamins really, I can't think of anything I have started using differently ... maybe it is one of the allergy meds I take? I am sort of afraid to ask the Dr about it.

Anyone ever heard of or experienced anything like this?

That's weird! So your DH doesn't smell it too? I've never heard of anything like that...you'd never smelled it before the past week? Is there something awry in the house maybe?

Or, and probably less likely, are you sure the dogs haven't taken up a Marlboro habit? LOL J/K :puppy:

Nope; DH doesn't smell it and there is nothing wrong in the house and never noticed it before ... and I am sure the dogs aren't smoking ;)

I did a saline nasal rinse a little bit ago and it has faded now.

Hmm, that's pretty strange. I've never had anything that smelled like smoke exactly.. but sometimes when my nose gets really dry inside from constant blowing when I'm sick, I notice this smell, it's the same smell every time... and it kind of smells like burn, like burnt food or something. When my nose gets moist again, it goes away. So... who knows! I'm glad the saline rinse helped though.

Do you have a tall, upward facing lamp in your house? Similar to this:

I've learned that when bugs (moths or huge flies to be more specific) get caught in here, it'll smoke for days.

Nope, I don't have one of those ... what a thought, gross ;)

Anyway; the smoke smell has gone away now, still don't know what is was.

I have had that happen to me with both smoke and gas smells. I attributed it to my phobia of house fires so basically just being paranoid.

Hmm, that's really strange. But I totally know about being sensitive to the smoke...
FH decided to smoke cigars Saturday night with a few of his friends. The smoke really gets to me, so on the rare occasions that he does smoke cigars, I make him smoke outside on the porch. But after he smoked for quite awhile, he came in and kissed me. My throat has been burning ever since. This isn't the first time this has happend. :bbconfused:
