Is it ok to drink milk after the sell by date?
I really don't like to, but DH swears it should be good a few days after that date. I don't know if it is in my head or what, but I always think it smells and tastes bad ... if we still have any around after the sell by date I will throw it out.

I've always heard that the date on a carton of milk is the last date a store is allowed to SELL it by, but that it's good to drink for 7 days after. :cloppy:

Technically it is but I can't bring myself to drink it. I am really weird about expiration dates. I check them on everything in the store before I buy stuff.

In the UK we have "Use By" and "Sell By" dates on food and drink.
The "Sell By" is a legal thing for shops etc. Anything seen on the shelves after that date and the shop can be taken to court.
The "Use By" is when the food / drink is at it's best. Anything after the Use By is up to the purchaser. A couple of days after the Use By is OK providing things like Bread does not have a little green fur coat on. :petrified:

It seems like it's almost never good even a couple days before the sell-by date. And what's really annoying is buying a gallon and it's bad right away. This tends to happen the most with gas station milk probably because the doors are opened more often.
We just had a gallon that expired on the 31st... On the 31st, I thought it tasted fine, so I drank a huge glass. Later on, I noticed I felt a little sick, and I thought it was from the food. I poured another glass for dinner even though DH said it was borderline bad and felt sick again. So I will definitely not be drinking "borderline bad" milk again... even if it is the only milk we have.

so long as it's been properly refrigerated n what not... it's good i think 7 days after the "sell by" date
but i'm the same way... i won't drink it at all after the date LOL but if i'm making something that calls for milk like mashed potatoes or something then i'd use it but i wouldn't pour a full glass of milk n down it...

I was thinking the same thing, as I was reading this, except, in our house, it's DH that freaks out about the expiration date. He'll go through the fridge every so often and dump stuff that is perfectly good, IMO. This one day I used some salad dressing, perfectly fine, and an hour later he took a trip through the fridge, tossing stuff out, and the salad dressing I had just eaten got chucked. I was like, "That stuff is totally fine!" and he's pointing to the date on there like it's the end all, be all authority of all that is not crusted over or moldy.

JD and I are always always always disagreeing about milk! I smell it every time before I drink it, and I sometimes think it's done even before the date. But JD will continue to drink it days after I do...

I've heard this too. Also (this is my own findings) low fat or fat free milk goes bad quicker then whole milk does.

Basically I don't pay much attention to the date on milk, only when I buy it (I buy the one with the latest date). But I ALWAYS smell it before pouring it, and give it a little swish to make sure I don't see any chunks. As long as it smells fine and has no chunks, then I use it. Usually it's gone way before the sell by date anyways. On occasion it would go bad way before, but we figured out why. We live in the attic at my fiance's grandma's house. So we put my mini fridge from college up here (it's not quite so mini, it's actually about 4 feet tall, but obviously not a normal size fridge). So we would keep as much of our stuff up here as we could so we wouldn't be taking up all his grandma's room in her fridge. He were keeping it in the door because it had the perfect place for 1/2 gal of milk. Well then we realized it wasn't staying good long enough b/c it was too close to the seal which might not have been keeping it air tight and every time we opened it, it was out in the open. So now we keep it in the back of the fridge and it is always good and gone before the date!
