Friends of mine are having a birthday party for their 1 year old next month. This morning I got notification that there was an update to the evite invitation. The only change I could see was that the cild is now "Registered" at ToysRUs. I was planning on bringing a gift of some sort, but does anyone think this is weird? Or the fact that they invited 50 people?

I have never heard of such a thing.

It seems to me like people are "registering" for everything these days. I'm not terribly surprised but I am definitely not a fan, ESPECIALLY putting that info on an invite/evite.

I can see registering for like, the baby shower, but a 1 year old's birthday party? wtf?? Yeah, that's odd.

maybe i'm in the minority... but i could see this being REALLY helpful for a child's birthday party... idk how many cousins n what not i've had NO CLUE what to get... and it's a birthday party OF COURSE ur gonna bring a gift... especially for a child...

but then again i don't get offended by registry info on any invites *shrugs*

for a 1 yr old meh they're a lil young but hey whateves if it helps ppl figure out what to get that's good :)

I don't mind registries on evites/invites - I would consider that for my showers, etc, but I don't think I'd do one for a 1 year old. 1 year old's are so easy to shop for! From a cute outfit to noisemakers (because it's tradition, we always gotta buy noisemakers for family babies). I'unno... that's just me I guess.

I do think it's a little odd and have never seen it before, however... I would be happy to have a registry to look at for a 1 year old's birthday party because I am the worst at picking out gifts for kids, especially 1 year olds. I usually end up starting at the toy section for an hour trying to figure out what kind of gift would be appropriate.

I'm admittedly really old school, so I think this is really weird. I do see what everyone is saying though - nobody wants to stand around Toys R Us for an hour trying to figure out what to get a one year old.

I am also in the minority I guess. I did do a "wish list" for my son's first birthday. But then his birthday is a month after christmas and I swear just about everyone asked me what they should get him. It just seemed easier to do up a small wish list for him online instead of trying to remember what I have told people to get him so far. I didn't say anything in the invites, but if someone asked, we told them. This worked out well too for the party my mom threw my son. She invited people I pretty much never see, so they did not know what my son was into, sizes he wore, etc.
It's not something I plan on doing all the time. But since his first birthday ended up being such a big event it made sense.

My initial, gut reaction was an objection because I thought registries were to assist someone get stuff they needed... and for a one year old you would likely be giving them toys or clothes, with everything else being provided by their parents. I can see the usefulness though with non-parents who don't know what to give a one year old or with figuring out the size for a kid.

The odder thing to me is, 50 people invited to a one year old's birthday? In my family, kid's birthdays were like, immediate family events only, especially when young like that. Is that just something particular to my family?

I'm not offended so much as it's just odd to me. I do agree, Gwen that I do not want to stand around ToysRUs forever. Honestly, I probably would have gone with a gift certificate or clothes since it's their first child. Stranger still is that they registered for diapers. Diapers? It's like giving a 5 year old socks! That's a gift for the parents, not the child IMO.

I was at the baby shower and there were quite a few people. 50 would be WAY overwhelming for me personally. I'd probably just have immediate family to an official party and then a little backyard BBQ for a few friends that maybe hadn't seen the child in awhile. eh, what do I know. I'm not even having kids! :bbmrgreen:

I imagine it would also be overwhelming for a one year old! ;)

see i'd imagine there'd be close to 50 ppl invited to my childs first b-day if i invited immediate family and close friends... but i mean i have like 15 first cousins and they have parents n most of my cousins have at least 2 young kids LOL then FH's fam n our friends...

I think it's pretty strange. I mean, how hard is it to shop for a 1 year old? Everything in the store is labeled what age it's for, and it's not like the baby is going to throw a fit because he got the wrong color or something. I'm curious to see if they register for the 2nd birthday and so on. Seems very weird to me.

I think it makes sense. If your kid has 100,000 Yo Gabba Gabba toys, you probably don't want to get any more, so a registry is a great way to say *this* is what my kid wants. Also, it's great for telling people what size your baby wears-I often see cute stuff to buy, but hesitate because I have no idea what they are in right now.

This is coming from a person who has had a running Amazon Wish List for many many many years because my parents and in laws are always asking me what I want, so I just keep adding things I like throughout the year.

It is pretty weird of them to register for diapers though. Just what every child wants for their birthday- groceries! It's like buying an adult toilet paper or toothpaste for their birthday- handy, but odd.

Maybe my viewpoint would have been different a few weeks ago, but just yesterday I was thinking about Christmas/birthdays/etc. We are, well, different from either one of our families. Way different! We plan on raising our child with natural toys when I know that every gift giving holiday the child will be likely to get tons of toys that we don't approve of. They waste money, the child doesn't get to keep the gift, etc. Now I'm thinking that a registry of some sort isn't such a bad idea! Not saying that I'll ever do one, but I can see some reasons why it may be a plausible idea now.

As for the 50 people thing. Kids bdays are always that big in my family! Maybe it's a cultural thing?

I think I should amend my response. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a wish list or spreading the word if someone asks. Heck, I have a running wish list for my husband that he can then pass along to his family when they ask for hints on what to get me. I think wish lists are a great idea. If you can put them online so an individual doesn't have to keep up with them, it's even better.

I think my objection is more to the practice of putting the information on an invitation - just like you shouldn't put registry info on your wedding invites, I don't think you should put it on any other kind of invite either!

Also, i never thought a child would be so picky about toys, I mean when I buy my children toys, they still wanna play with the pots and pans in the kitchen. It's really all about imagination with them, I just think it's the parents being picky, I don't really think a 1 year old really KNOWS what toy they want especially at that age.

I agree with this. Also, if the clothes happen to not fit or whatever.. Thats why i ALWAYS put the receipt with it.. They can always take it back if its not what they can use..
