How did you know that she/he was the one?

Almost four years
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?

31
Small wedding or big?
Small - about 50
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
Nope
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
There was a crazy amount of all kinds of food. There was a meditteranean tapas station, a carving and potato station, a salad bar, and a sushi/sashimi bar. Way too much food.

We just had a pro photographer for the first 2 hours - after that it was up to drunks with disposable cameras. The hotel provided a videographer for the ceremony as well.
Dancing?
Sure, there was even a conga line...
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Nope.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
We had a guy RSVP two weeks before the wedding, saying he was coming, and we rearranged everything and paid more on the deposit to include him. And then he didn't show up. I was PO'ed. Also, my best friend's father got ill 2 days before and he and her mother stayed behind in San Francisco. They were very disappointed to miss it, and I was sad they weren't there, but I wouldn't have wanted him to risk his health and well being.
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
We had a great belated trip to Key West.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We didn't get many gifts, which was what we wanted.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
I own a condo that I cannot sell anytime soon in this economy. So, no house in our future, especially if we want to stay in Los Angeles. Although, if we win the lotto that I don't play, a house would be my first purchase. ;)
Do you plan on having children; when?
Dunno. I vote no. DH sort of wants them. The conversation is still in the air.
Do you both work?
Yes, sort of. DH is in law school, which is harder work than a job.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I wish DH's dumb friend hadn't called my brother a derogatory name. I also wish I had gotten to eat more! :bun:
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Be friends. Be civil with one another. Don't yell. Always talk it out, but wait until you both have time to talk - don't just barge in and expect your DH to attend to whatever is bothering you on the spot. Somtimes he's doing something!
Brush the stupid stuff off because in the long run it won't have mattered if he left his socks on the floor. Yeah, it's annoying, but if that's the worst thing he does to you then you have a lot to be grateful for. :flopsy:

How did you know that she/he was the one?
The feeling grew over time...
How long were you together before getting engaged?
Two and a half years.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Oh, absolutely! I study sociology, and one of my research areas is gender. Marriage does not always benefit the wife, according the research, so we talked a lot about what we wanted our marriage to look like in order to keep it equitable. I was not going to get married if it was going to be a "traditional" marriage, and we both have our professional hopes and dreams.
How did the proposal go?
What proposal? We were laying in bed talking about our future, the possibility of getting married, how we'd compromise on the future together (since once you're attached, you can't do everything you want without doing severe violence on your spouse's dreams) and decided to get married.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
Initially I wanted a diamondless ring with both an aquamarine and an emerald (our two birthstones). We could not find a couple's ring like that that wasn't really ugly. So my husband surprised me with the ring I have, about six months into our engagement.

My family and us self catered. Pulled pork, salad, pasta salad, salt potatoes and blueberries with creme fraise.
Photographer and/or videographer?
We had a friend take pictures, and he did a good job for never shooting a wedding before!

Not at all. I didn't use a bouquet.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
Everyone who said they'd come, came.
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
Yep, Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We were overwhelmed with everyone's generosity. We didn't register anywhere, and got overwhelmingly cards. BUT - those who gave us gifts, gave us really, really thoughtful ones!
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
Oh now why would we do something like that, do you think we're adults or something? Nope - not on a graduate student's salary!
Do you plan on having children; when?
We're trying for a kitty ;)
Do you both work?
We are both funded graduate students. He's got an office assistantship, I've got a teaching assistantship and some additional funding.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
Fix the coffee! And that's it, really.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?

It was so cold that we didn't stay there long, and when we got back to my apartment he had set up champagne and three dozen roses in my bedroom.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
Yes! He got the setting I had told him I liked, and he picked out the diamond himself and it was better than I could have imagined!

Dancing?
Yeah, we did the first dance and then opened the floor
Bouquet and Garter toss?
we did the garter, and I presented my mom with my bouquet
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
Yes and yes. But the people who didn't come were dealing with flooding in their homes from the horrible rainfall that destroyed my brother's car the night before!
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
We went to Disney World and Vero Beach, FL
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
we ended up with about half and half... worked out nicely!
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
we rent a townhome now and are trying to decide whether to buy or rent again when the lease ends
Do you plan on having children; when?
Well, he plans on it, I'm not certain yet, but it won't be for several years either way
Do you both work?
He works, and I'm trying to find a job!
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I wouldn't change anything... I was pleased with the whole day.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Talk talk talk... but know when to give each other space too. Find an activity that you both enjoy because it's good to have something to do and look forward to together. Stay romantic... don't stop sending sweet texts or bringing home flowers or going on dates just because you're married now.

How did you know that she/he was the one?
We were talking one night about what love really is - I've always thought it was as much a choice as anything else - and he said a few things and I just remember getting this "Oooooh no. I'm about to fall hard" feeling - aaand I ignored him for two days until I decided to just take the plunge. :P
How long were you together before getting engaged?
Well, that was in 2005. So, roughly four years. We were only official for a year and a half, though.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
We talked about it before we were official, just in general not with each other, and for the last year or so have talked more specifically about it.
How did the proposal go?
AMAZINGLY! He surprised me at Callaway Gardens with a proposal note in the Brochure!!
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I have never looked at rings, but his great-grandmother's is very special and more than I ever would have wanted.
Who did you tell first?
Aside from everyone in our families who all knew it, I texted my best friend and my fav. co-worker!
What is/was the date of the wedding?
Around March 27, 2011. The actual date is not set, but it will be March/April of 2011.
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
Summer is out, because he is a golf course Super.
Fall is out because we are both HUGE football fans and hunters (and I still pick on my best friend for letting his wife talk him into getting married on opening day of dove season and the first weekend of NCAA football :P )
So, we settled for Spring, since I'm too cold-natured for winter!
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
I'll be 25, he'll be 27.
Small wedding or big?
Our tentative list is around 110 right now. I don't know if thats big or small..
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
Maybe a unity candle, and I want to write our own vows.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
We want BBQ-ish, very traditional southern.
Photographer and/or videographer?
I'd like both :D We are getting a cheap photog, friend of a friend, though so that opens up some dough.
Dancing?
Heck yes!
Bouquet and Garter toss?
It depends - I don't have very many single friends! But if several show up, definitely.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
Don't know yet.
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
Yep. We want to go deep sea fishing, maybe in the Atlantic, but we are trying to start saving now for Australia!!
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We haven't even decided if we're registering anywhere yet. We go back and forth.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
He bought a house a week before graduating college. We currently live there and are enjoying fixing it up to our dream home. :)
Do you plan on having children; when?
Yes - and we don't know. I asked him that and his eyes got all bulgy - but he's already said he definitely wants one or two. I never thought I'd be a mom... Hm.
Do you both work?
Yep
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
Don't know yet!! OH! I would want an endless budget!! Haha

How did you know that she/he was the one?
I think I always knew in the back of my mind... I could tell he was different from the other guys I'd dated or had interest in. I remember thinking before we started dating that if we did start dating, it'd be the relationship that "stuck" and I was trying to figure out if that was what I wanted... as it turns out, it most definitely was!
How long were you together before getting engaged?
a year and 5 months
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
yup
How did the proposal go?
It was lovely and in front of friends and siblings.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
yup, I picked it out :)
Who did you tell first?
I think it was my supervisor at work... I think I waited to tell family/friends because I wanted to act like the whole proposal was a surprise.
What is/was the date of the wedding?
July 25th, 2009.
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
He wanted 8/8, that didn't work for our venue... then we could have any date in July, and he liked the 25th the best. Soo, we went with that.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
25
Small wedding or big?
medium
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
sand ceremony
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, cole slaw, rolls, cranberries (which I just remembered I didn't even try)
Photographer and/or videographer?
The minister's wife... they were advertisering on Onewed.
Dancing?
yup
Bouquet and Garter toss?
nope!
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
a few rsvp'ed that didn't come... and one that wasn't on the rsvp list
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
We went to his family's lake place the day after
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
a mixture is good... we got way more cards. His family all decided to give cards because gifts were kind of a hassle to carry at the last family wedding.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
I wish!
Do you plan on having children; when?
in a couple years when I'm done with school though I have major baby fever now... it seems like so many people are pregnant or have just had babies.
Do you both work?
yup, though I would like to bump up to something full-time sometime in the near future... not sure how likely that is.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
The timing of when we all got to the ceremony spot... If we had all gotten there on time there would've been more pictures... It wasn't just us; the photographer was also late (she got lost). Other than that, it was better than we could've possibly hoped for.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Talk big decisions through together... try not to over-react to fights and arguments. Make time for the two of you to be alone together (dates or just hanging out).

How did you know that she/he was the one?
We became each others best friend and we enjoy each others company. I couldn't picture my life without him.
How long were you together before getting engaged?
7.5 years
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
We did - and DH always said he never wanted to get married so that was usually the extent of the conversation. I always hoped he'd change his mind but I was happy with the life we had.
How did the proposal go?
At home on my 24th Birthday in our living room just the 2 of us.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I never looked at e-rings and the one he picked out by himself was gorgeous and perfect.
Who did you tell first?
My parents (but my dad already knew).
What is/was the date of the wedding?
August 15, 2009.
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
June and July are too busy at work and we aren't suppose to take time off and my next course starts in September so August seemed like a good time. The specific date just seemed to work.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
Me - 25 and DH - 27
Small wedding or big?
I'd say Medium - 115 people.
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
Each of the parents did a scripture reading and we did a unity candle ceremony.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
Traditional turkey dinner - turkey, new potatoes, stuffing, mixed veggies. Started with rolls & a salad. Apple crumble for dessert. Also a candy bar and we had locally made chips on the tables for the dance.
Photographer and/or videographer?
Photographer was the same one that did my parents wedding and DH's parents wedding. My cousin (who is a journalism student) videotaped the ceremony and the speeches at the reception.
Dancing?
You know it!
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Yes to both.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
Yes - so annoying! We had several actually that said they were coming and didn't. All on DH's side! Right off the top of my head I can think of 6 that were complete no-shows and then we have a friend and his girlfriend that came to the ceremony but never showed to the reception. We had also paid for meals for the minister and my photographer's wife as he said she may come to help with all his equipment who never came to the reception.
We also had a couple of people at the dance who weren't invited. They didn't dance but were drinking. One of them we know, the other we didn't. The one we know even signed our guestbook. They knew the bartenders working and I think that is why they were there.
We also had several people not RSVP at all.
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
We left the Monday after the wedding and went to Niagara Falls.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
Either or worked for us as we did a registry. I'd say that we got a 50/50 mix of cash and gifts. Not very many giftcards. However, the majority of the gifts received were items not on our registry which is rather annoying!
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
Been living in ours since 2007.
Do you plan on having children; when?
Undecided but we love our furbaby.
Do you both work?
Yes - DH is in IT and I work for the government.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
DH's parents leaving when they did (@ 8:30) before our first dance, special dances, bouquet/garter toss and the cake cutting. As well as them not speaking to me the entire weekend. They also didn't attend our rehearsal dinner or the gift opening.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Take time for each other - your day can easily get away from you with so many other things going on. Remember why you guys are together. Never go to bed angry and always kiss each other goodnight.

How did you know that she/he was the one?
I knew I wanted to be with him and no one else.
How long were you together before getting engaged?
First dated when we were 14, but weren't ever really "together" before the proposal. No titles or anything. Haha.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Not even close. We had a spontaneous proposal and marriage.
How did the proposal go?
He totally caught me off guard. My response was a shaky "...kay".
Did you get the ring you wanted?
Didn't have a ring for the first proposal, but he did propose a second time with a ring I could have only dreamed of. It's perfect for me.
Who did you tell first?
My best friend.
What is/was the date of the wedding?
We were officially married in a JOP service on July 29th, 2008. Our wedding was on May 30th, 2009.
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
Nope. I let him choose, as long as we could get married back home.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
We were both 22.
Small wedding or big?
JOP service was just us, the magistrate, and our witnesses. Our wedding was pretty big with 200+ people.
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
Yes. We did the blessing of the hands. I love it.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
DH and I had lobster. :D Our guests got to choose from oven fried chicken with thyme pan jus or braised beef short ribs. Both with garlic mashed potatoes and beans as a side. Bread baskets and salads as appetizers and wedding cake for dessert.
Photographer and/or videographer?
2 photographers and DH's father, who in my opinion, should be a professional photographer. He took some amazing pictures.
Dancing?
Yep.
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Both.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
We had some people that RSVP'd and never showed, but we also had people bring dates that they didn't RSVP for, so it's a good thing we had extra food!
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
No. We're moving to Yokosuka, Japan in 4.5 months for 3 years, so we figure that can play out as an adventure for us.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We got a lot of cards with cash in them. We really liked everything we got though. There wasn't a single thing we had to return. :D
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
No. DH is enlisted in the military and we have to move a lot. So no buying a house for a while, although we'll rent many. :)
Do you plan on having children; when?
Yes. In 5-7 years.
Do you both work?
Yes.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I wish both of our dads could have been there. RIP, we love you.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Love is a crazy, wonderful thing. It'll take work sometimes and be effortless other times. Always think about your spouse first if you want them to do the same for you. If you know you're wrong, apologize. It's a two way street, kids. ;) And always, always kiss each other before you go to sleep, unless you're apart. :D

How did you know that she/he was the one?
After chatting on the telephone for 13 HOURS straight (we actually started our relationship long-distance). We forgot to eat and drink during those 13 hours and were both totally sick the next morning - I called him to complain! And then we spoke over breakfast... I think that call lasted nine hours!
How long were you together before getting engaged?
4.5 years.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Of course! This is a must!
How did the proposal go?
He quietly proposed to me the day before Thanksgiving, at the sand dunes across the street from our house that overlook the sea. It was perfect!
Did you get the ring you wanted?
No, but I loved what he picked out anyways!
Who did you tell first?
I tried to tell my Dad, but he was blabbing over me about my aunt's mashed potatoes. I think that my father-in-law was the first to actually pay attention?
What is/was the date of the wedding?
September 26, 2008
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
We just talked to our most important friends and family (many of whom were living in Europe), and chose a date that was good for them.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
25
Small wedding or big?
Small! We had 30 people in all.
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
We had a non-traditional ceremony performed by a family friend who is a Sufi. The main readings were by Khalil Gibran.
A really creative idea we came up with was to offer the parents of our partner "gratitude gifts" as a way of thanks for doing such a great job raising him or her to be the one we love.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
Beverages:
Top-Shelf Open Bar
Hors D'oeuvres:
Bacon Wrapped Scallops with Plum Sauce
Arugula Gorgonzola Crostini
Prosciutto Wrapped Melon
Milk Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
Elegant Fruit and Frommage Display
Salad:
Mixed Green Salad with Two Dressings
Cucumber Bay Shrimp Salad
Entrees:
Gorgonzola Crusted Filet Mignon
Mahi-Mahi with Macadamia Nut Crust and Mango Beurre Blanc
Sides:
Goat Cheese and Fresh Herb Stuffed Potatoes
Fresh Asparagus and Baby Carrots
Dessert Display (it had adorable little tarts, petit-fours, and cookies)
For the Kids:
Chicken Strips/Fries for 3
Photographer and/or videographer?
We had a photographer, a really nice lady named Vanessa Stump. If you're getting married in Souther California, I highly recommend her!
We didn't have a videographer.
Dancing?
Yes!
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Sort of? We had a bouquet toss, but there was only one single, heterosexual male guest at the wedding, so we sort of handed him the garter as a joke.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
One friend had her grandfather die the day before the wedding and called me up sobbing. The other was a friend's boyfriend... I still don't know why he couldn't make it.
On the other hand, we had a friend call the morning of the wedding and ask if she could come on such short notice, so one of the seats got filled!
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
We actually waited six months to go on our Hawaiian honeymoon, because the wedding left us flat broke!
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
I couldn't care less. I just wanted my loved ones to be there. I... think we got an even mix? I really don't remember.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
He owned our condo long before he met me.
Do you plan on having children; when?
We're planning on having one... eventually.
Do you both work?
Not at the moment; but I'm a full-time student! As soon as I finish my education, that's the plan!
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
My hairstylist! All of our hairstyles fell apart shortly after the ceremony, so we all look terrible in the formals.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Communicate openly and lovingly. Discuss any issues that might arise in a constructive manner. Oh, and never forget to be affectionate with one another, no matter how long you've been married!

We aren't going to go on our honeymoon until April or May of next year, but we are going to go somewhere for just a couple of days to relax after the wedding
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
Eh, I don't really care--anything is appreciated! But we've definitely gotten more gifts so far.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
Nah, we're going to keep renting just to make sure we'll be staying in this area for awhile before we buy
Do you plan on having children; when?
Probably not. We want lots of dogs though!
Do you both work?
Yes....we're hoping in the next few years that I won't have to--at least not full time. I don't think I could ever not do anything. I need a purpose!
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
Well I'm not sure yet, but hopefully there won't be anything to change!

How did you know that she/he was the one?
I just knew. He not only fit my dreams for what I had always said I'd like my future husband to be like, but he put a face to those dreams where there hadn't been one before! :)
How long were you together before getting engaged?
10 months
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Yes, alot. We both knew in January that we were going to get married, so we had 8 months of talking before he actually proposed! :D
How did the proposal go?
Amazing! :) Because of a conversation we'd had the night before I didn't think he was ready to ask me, and to be fair, it wasn't something he'd planned. He didn't have a ring to give me and he didn't get down on one knee, but to me, it was everything I could have hoped for! :)
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I have a ring now and I love it! :) We both ended up picking it out together online and ordering it. :hearts:
Who did you tell first?
My mom and dad, a bunch of our friends, his parents (much later that night just because they were at a party).
What is/was the date of the wedding?
hehe... we still aren't sure! :) We are talking about Aug 27/28 but end up with an earlier or later date so the airline prices are better for his family to be here.
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
IF we go with the August 27/28 date it will be because it's midway between his and my birthdays (I'm Aug 21 and he's Sept 4). If we end up changing the dates, then it will likely just be whatever date works best for all involved. :P
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
I'll be 34 or 35 depending and he'll be 28 or 29 depending
Small wedding or big?
Small! The wedding ceremony is family only (the only friends will be in the wedding party itself) and is about 20-25 total. The reception will be bigger but likely still around only 50 total.
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
Not sure yet. We are talking about having a friend of mine sing during a part of the wedding though.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
Buffet
Photographer and/or videographer?
Both but the videographer will only be there for the ceremony itself.
Dancing?
Yes but probably only his and my 1st dance and MAYBE the father/daughter and mother/son dances. Other then that we are planning for the music to be nice wedding and happy themed background music. :P
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Bouquet toss but no garter toss and the bouquet toss will probably be a newer twist - like a split bouquet with sayings on each flower stem or something like that.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
I haven't sent the invitations out yet
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
hehe because of our unusual situation (being that we are having a civil ceremony much earlier in the year and then the "official" wedding later) we are actually hoping to go on the honeymoon prior to the "official" wedding. We figure that we might as well go on the honeymoon while Anton is waiting for his work permit. :P
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
Prefer cards or money gifts because of limited to no storage space, but honestly, I just want to have our friends and family there to celebrate our day!
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
We'll be living with my parents until we can save up money (and until he gets a work permit!) to move to our own place. With our thoughts that we MIGHT decide to have a child right away, we may end up staying for several years, but that gives us a build in babysitter, who's been just WAITING for me to have a child! :P
Do you plan on having children; when?
We both want to have at least one child together, and have been talking about trying right after our wedding.
Do you both work?
Yes for now we both work and eventually when he gets here and gets his work permit, we both will at that point too. We both plan on going back to school and when we do, we'll each also have a part time job so we can also be saving money for our future and the home we'd like and children etc. :P
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I haven't had my wedding yet
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
I'm not married yet, but communication is such an important thing. Also I would caution anyone out there that is waiting or hoping for a ring, to not pressure their partner for it. Anton and I had had many candid talks about marriage, but the most important one for me was when I told him that I wanted him to ask me ONLY when he was sure about it. I plan to live the rest of my life growing old with him and I don't ever want to feel like he asked me only because he thought he needed to or felt pressured into it. When he was ready and did ask, it made everything amazing! :hearts:

Who did you tell first?
my mom
What is/was the date of the wedding?
no official date set- I will work on this during my vacation but we are thinking July 2010
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
I REALLY wanted July 4th because I LOVE the holiday and firecrackers but his mom thought things would be more expensive on a holiday and that it might ruin people's usual plans so we are probably going with the following weekend....as long as I can have sparklers at the reception!! ;-)
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
28 or 29 (depending if we wait til the following summer)

I don't think we'll be able to take a honeymoon but that's alright with us

How did you know that she/he was the one?
When I was really sick and he was taking care of me. I sat up in bed and had to threw up. He looked at me and saw it in my eyes I wouldn't make it to the bathroom so he rushed by my side and cupped his hands together and told me, "Go ahead, it's okay." I know it sounds nasty, but it was such a sweet gesture, and I give him kudos for not puking from the smell and touch of my throw up. I asked him why he didn't get sick from it and he said, "I was about to, but then I looked at you and realized what's there to get sick over?? It's you."

Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?

About 4ish years
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Absolutely
How did the proposal go?
We had grilled out one night and were sitting at the table having steaks and a glass of wine. I had said I thought we should toast and so he made me go first. I gave my toast and he tried to give the same one and I told him no, then all of a sudden he was down on his knee with a ring! I was in such shock my words were "get up get up" LOL It wasn't registering with me what was happening. He still gives me grief to this day because I'm very traditional in I had always told him he better get on his knee and then when he did my response was "get up get up" LOL (To my defense I was in shock and thought something was wrong. Anyways, it was very intimate to us, which is what meant the most to me!

Do you plan on having children; when?
I think so, a couple years after our wedding. This idea keeps growing on me.
Do you both work?
Yes we do.. I do HR and he has his own automotive business.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
Nothing, because I'm planning things just the way we want them. :yesnod:
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
I'm not married yet so I'm not sure I can give any advice. One thing I have learned through being engaged is that your wedding is only about you and your FH. You can't make everyone happy, but you can make you and your FH happy. Also to just enjoy each other! :hearts:

How long were you together before getting engaged?
a year and half
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
We hadn't talked so much of marriage, but what we expected each other in the future was talked about quite a bit.
How did the proposal go?
New Year's Day (morning). I had stayed the night at his place after going to a party with him the night before (I live 45 minutes away). At about 8:30 in the morning, I woke up, he was already awake, watching me sleep and said "Hello, beautiful" (LIAR! ) I could tell something was up and he said, "I was just thinking about stuff, the future mainly" and he got all teary eyed and said "I can't imagine spending another year without you by my side, will you marry me?" After staring at him in shock for about 10 minutes, I finally said "YES!" and we went out and bought a ring the next day.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
Yes, he took me with him because he was afraid that I wouldn't like what he picked out by himself
Who did you tell first?
His family

How did you know that she/he was the one?
Well, we'd been together for nearly nine years before the wedding. So we'd had time to figure it out. ;-)
How long were you together before getting engaged?
About eight years.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
No. I proposed three days after Massachusetts opened up same-sex marriage to nonresidents of Massachusetts. Thus, we'd pretty much assumed we could never get married until nearly the day of my proposal. That made the proposal particularly hair-raising for me. I knew NotFroofy wanted to be with me for the rest of our lives, but given all the legal complications of a same-sex marriage, I wasn't sure she would want to be married to me.
How did the proposal go?
I was so nervous before proposing that NotFroofy could see something was going on, and thought maybe I was mad at her. I finally sat her down on a daybed in her study, and blurted out something like, "So what would you think of the idea of getting married?" No ring, no going down on one knee. Fortunately, she accepted anyway.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
Definitely yes! For my first marriage, I had a white gold solitaire engagement ring with a honking great diamond inherited from my grandmother, and a plain white gold wedding band. However, as I got older, I found myself wearing more gold-colored jewelry, and realized I really would have preferred a yellow gold band. In addition, wearing a big diamond made me nervous when I was traveling or walking around in high crime areas. So, for my second wedding, I knew I did not want an engagement ring, and wanted a plain yellow gold wedding band.
Coincidentally, NotFroofy had a plain yellow gold wedding band that she inherited from her grandmother. It had real sentimental significance for her--see story at this link (http://sites.google.com/site/2dbride/dresses/rings#TOC-My-Ring). However, she was nervous I would want something more ornate. As it was, what she offered and what I wanted were identical.
We had a little more of an issue finding a wedding band for NotFroofy. She did not want an engagement ring, and wanted a wedding ring that would match mine. However, when we went to a local jewelry store, they told us that NotFroofy's grandmother's ring was 22 karat gold, which is almost unknown in this country. NotFroofy therefore resigned herself to getting a similar ring, but with 18 karat gold. However, without telling her, I found and bid on a ring on eBay UK that was 22 karat gold, and about the same vintage as the ring NotFroofy was giving me. Somehow, I managed to negotiate both the currency differences and the different ring size categories, and won it. She was thrilled when I told her about it.
Who did you tell first?
My children.
What is/was the date of the wedding?
October 6, 2009
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
Well, when we got engaged, the only state in which we could get married was Massachusetts. So we figured we might as well have a ceremony in the fall, which is the most beautiful time in Massachusetts.
September was out, because so many of the Jewish holidays are then. Our reception venue was not available for late October or early November. So we figured that early October was our best bet. At that point, NotFroofy decided that we should have our wedding on my birthday, so that I would always remember our anniversary.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
I turned 56 on our wedding day.
Small wedding or big?
Very small ceremony--a dozen guests total. A rather larger reception back in DC--60 people.
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
No special ceremonies. Our reading was quite unusual, though--it can be found at this link (http://sites.google.com/site/2dbride/ceremony/ceremony-text#TOC-Reading).
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
We had a luncheon at Legal Sea Foods immediately following the ceremony. We gave guests a choice of lobster, fillet mignon, salmon, or crab cakes.
Our reception back in DC was a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception. We had a couple of different kinds of meatballs, pigs in blankets, a ham, vegetarian quiches, and a gourmet cheese tray, along with various sides. We also had a chocolate fountain, and of course wedding cake.
Photographer and/or videographer?
We had a professional photographer for the ceremony. Friends helped with videography for the ceremony, and photography at the reception.
Dancing?
Yes. Our first dance was a swing dance to Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love." Many of our friends are dance enthusiasts, so there was a lot of dancing.
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Definitely not! We gave one of our bouquets to my former sister-in-law (the only local guest at the ceremony) and the other to the staff of the synagogue where we were married. NotFroofy kept her garter as a souvenir, and I sold mine.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
We had several that sent RSVPs and did not come. Some got sick and some just no-showed without giving a reason.
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
No, we did not take a honeymoon.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We had only one couple that gave us a cash gift. We got a few gift cards, and several gifts. Many people gave us gifts of services--everything from being the musician at our reception to doing the video of the ceremony. I was particularly touched at such personal gifts.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
I've owned my own home since 1980.
Do you plan on having children; when?
Between finances and our age, that's not going to be happening.
Do you both work?
Usually, yes. I've been self-employed since 2000. NotFroofy lost her job in the recession, but is doing some free-lance work and looking for a job.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
Well, there were a lot of minor issues that occurred. But honestly, the wedding felt just perfect to us.
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
I'd say the absolutely biggest thing is to learn how to negotiate. My ex-husband would turn up as about 98% compatible with me on almost any scale you could come up with. The problem is that he had absolutely not idea of how to negotiate. Thus, the other 2% ended up never getting resolved. When he became depressed, and isolated himself from all adults other than me, he basically started blaming me for his depression.

So after the kids had opened their gifts I was curious to see what "small" thing he had gotten for me. I got him a pair of slippers!! So he said someting to the effect of" I guess I have to give you your gift" All nonchalant.like it was no big thing. He pulled a black ring box out of his pocket. I swear I was gonna pass out!! He never got down on one kneee or anything but it was memorable just the same
Did you get the ring you wanted?

Small wedding or big?

What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
During cocktail hour we'll be serving cheese, crackers and pepperoni and fruit and veggie platters. For dinner it will be antipasto salad, chicken parm, ziti meatballs and sausage. Of course rolls, butter and coffee. We'll be having a 3 teir wedding cake. Yellow cake with a raspberry filling.

My first inkling is kind of a personal thing that I'd rather not share here to be honest. But about 4 months into our dating relationship, there was just too much about her that was exactly what I was looking for in a wife/life-long partner to dismiss that she was the one for me.
How long were you together before getting engaged?
6 months to the day.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Yes, several times
How did the proposal go?
I've shared the story elsewhere here at the OneWed Forum...but I'll boil it down to the fact that I proposed partially with an audio production I created (I worked in radio at the time), and make my proposal to her in front of the altar at church where we met.
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I got the ring SHE wanted. ;) She and her mom both worked for a jeweler at the time. I got a 1 kt. Princess Cut diamond/gold band (which is now dipped/coated) for a very, very good deal. She loves her ring.
Who did you tell first?
Well, I talked to my parents first about what I was thinking. Then, I asked her parents permission. After she said "yes", we went back to her house (she was living with her parents), and her folks, and mine (and my two sisters) were all there. They all knew I was proposing...and were there to celebrate with us. So our families were the first to "officially" know. I'm just glad she said "yes". ;)
What is/was the date of the wedding?
April 28, 2001
Did you choose the date for any special reason?
We didn't want to wait TOO long before getting married. I wanted to get married on my birthday. (Happy birthday to me.) Gayle was wiser and said "let's wait for a week after. I want you to have your own day for your birthday."
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
We were both 25. (34 now.)
Small wedding or big?
Big. We had about 500 people at the reception I believe? (She and her family know a LOT of people very well, and my extended family isn't exactly small...nor is hers.)
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
We had a Christian Wedding ceremony, and shared communion together. I don't remember the readings exactly, but I believe one was probably 1 Corinthians 13.
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
I don't remember anything super special. Chicken, vegetables, etc. The cake was a chocolate raspberry cake. That I DO remember. It was very good.
Photographer and/or videographer?
We had both. The photographer still shot film then (though I think she's since switched to digital.) Also had a videographer that my Dad knew/worked with. He did video on the side. He did a fine job.
Dancing?
Oh heck yes...
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Yes, both.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
I honestly don't remember. ;)
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
Yes, we flew out the next day. We honeymooned on Sanibel Island, Florida.
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
We had plenty of gifts, and a number of cash gifts also. Can't remember which was more.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
No we did not. Didn't have the downpayment, and the market was getting to the height of the bubble at that time. Took us 2 years I believe...and the very height of the bubble.
Do you plan on having children; when?
We adopted our son who is turning 6 at the end of January 2011.
Do you both work?
Yes. I work for PrintMyThing.com / PrintMyRibbon.com - she works very hard managing our home and son, and also babysits. I appreciate her so, so much. Not sure why some people look down on women that work at managing their homes. She juggles a LOT and I highly respect that she pulls it all off. I try and help when I can.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I would have hired a band rather than a DJ. But, I'm partial to live musicians. I played piano/drums growing up. (Funny enough, I was a radio DJ for 13 years...but still preferred live music.)
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Love keeps no record of wrongs. Don't understand what the word "divorce" means, and don't allow the use of that word in your marriage. It can be hard...but the best things in life are worth fighting to keep.
Romance your spouse as much as possible. Keep the spark alive. Its work at times, but again, its work that is worth it.
And my last bit of advice (that I cannot take credit for...they're not my words) is: "A cord of three strands is not easily broken."

Kind of - I don't know, we discussed that we definitely wanted to marry each other, We both knew that way before we got engaged.
How did the proposal go?
We were at a car show and all of our friends and family started showing up, I assumed they all came just to see his car (that's typical at car shows) and right after the national anthem around noon (Big thing we do at every car show) the DJ called me up to the DJ booth in front of the whole crowd (he had told them not to leave because he had a special announcement) and Ky got up there and proposed!
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I didn't necessarily have a specific ring in mind, so I guess you can say yes!

How did you know that she/he was the one?
It was a long process, but I think I finally realized it when I found out that he was moving a thousand miles away. I realized that I would be losing far more than just my best friend... I'd be losing my soul mate.
How long were you together before getting engaged?
almost 18 months - 1 day shy.
Did you discuss marriage and what you both want/expect before getting engaged?
Yes. But really, the whole idea of getting married happened about a month before we got engaged. So not too terribly long
How did the proposal go?
I was freezing (it was the first week in January and he proposed outside). I honestly don't remember a whole lot, other than thinking, "HURRY UP SO I CAN GET IN THE CAR AND GET WARM!!!" LOL!
Did you get the ring you wanted?
I never went to pick one out with him, so I guess I have to say no.
Who did you tell first?
Well, before the proposal, I told my best friend and 2 other friends, my co-workers and I think my brother (we'd planned when he was going to do it - it wasn't a surprise). Afterwards, the first person I told was my mom, and I called her at 7am because it was already posted on facebook, and I didn't want her to find out from somebody else! LOL!

Did you choose the date for any special reason?
Yes. 9-10-11.
How old were you/will you be when you got/get married?
Um.... old. LOL!
Small wedding or big?
Pretty big. We wanted to keep it small and have it at a place that only held 55 people total... but we have too many family/friends for that!
Were/will there be any special ceremonies or readings?
YES! Probably too many! LOL!
What sort of food was/will there be at the reception/party?
Well, it's supposed to be prime rib and salmon, but if the price of salmon goes up too terribly high due to the radiation in the ocean, then we'll decide on something else later. ;)
Photographer and/or videographer?
Yes and yes.
Dancing?
Yep! :)
Bouquet and Garter toss?
Yes and yes.
Anyone RSVP and not come or anyone show that didn't RSVP?
Haven't sent out invites yet, so I don't know. Hopefully not! LOL!
Did you go/do you plan to honeymoon right away; if so where?
Yes - we're going on a Disney cruise 10 days after we're married. That'll give me enough time to get me moved to Seattle before we set sail. :)
Prefer gifts or cards; which did you get more of?
Don't know yet.
Do you have or plan to buy a house right away?
We're gonna wait a while.
Do you plan on having children; when?
Yes. Whenever I get pregnant.
Do you both work?
Yes.
If you could change one thing about your wedding, what would it be?
I'll know in September! ;)
What kind of marital advice do you have to offer someone?
Marry someone who compliments your personality - not matches it perfectly. Don't dismiss someone simply because they're not your "type." Your "type" might just be the reason why you're still single! LOL! And marry your best friend! :)
