View Full Version : When to test?

I stopped using the pill just over a month ago. I had my normal period as I finished up the pack. So I just completed my first month of no pills as of last week. We plan to start trying officially after I get my period this month. 28 days from my last period (which was when I finished the pill pack) would have been this last Friday. I haven't started yet. We haven't been super careful, but have used a birth control method just not fully because it would have been okay if we got pregnant this last month.
In case I was confusing (I know I was) July 17th I finished my pills and haven't taken any since, and the 18th of July I started my last period - which means 28 days later would have been last Friday August 14th. Today is the 19th.
I know that sometimes it takes a while for your body to adjust going off of birth control, and I don't feel pregnant in any way - (haha well I did smell DH's PB&J sandwhich from across the room the other day and when I said woah, that smells strong he looked at me like I was crazy) and sure that I haven't started yet because my body is adjusting. BUT at what point should I take a test if I still haven't started? This upcoming Friday? 2 weeks from when I should have started?
I would normally test for sure if I was 2 weeks late. But I'm not really sure what I should consider late you know?
When would you/did you test after going off of the pill? Or did your period come right at the 28 days like it did while on the pill? I don't wanna be wasting those expensive tests haha

I was not on the pill, I had and IUD, but ended up getting pregnant right away with no period in between. I just waited about a week after I thought I should get my period and took a test. You can pick up HPT at the dollar store for anywhere from $1-$4. They are pretty much just as affective as the name brand tests. That way you aren't spending a ton of money on a test.
It is hard to predict when to take the test after adjusting off of BC. Because your period can be so irregular at first.

Yeah, I will probably wait until Friday and if I haven't gotten it yet I'll test that morning. I just wish my period would hurry up and come so we can start trying officially.
Good to hear that you think dollar store tests are just as affective. I was seeing some pretty expensive ones! I can see how that cost could really add up if you were having a hard time getting pregnant and were testing every month.

I would give it another week or so and see if you have any symptoms of starting then. If you take one too soon, you may get a false reading.
Good luck :)
I was 2 weeks late last month and ended up getting my AF - so I'd say go for it on Friday. Get a few from the dollar tree so that you don't have to spend a lot of $$$ on tests!
*baby dust*!!!

If I test too soon - like say Friday morning, are the chances high of getting a false positive? I'd hate to test, and if I were to get a positive and then be excited about it being positive if I weren't actually pregnant. We aren't officially trying until after I get my period this month, but if I were now we'd be ecstatic of course.
I think I read somewhere though that you apparently can't get a false positive, anyone know if there is any truth to that?
Jacklynn, I've never heard of a false positive. However, I've heard of a lot of false negatives - so just treat yourself like you are pg and in the meantime.... test on Friday, then the following Friday if you aren't satisfied with the results this Friday - and if AF doesn't show up.

It is very rare to get a false possitive but it can happen, I know I've been there myself a couple years ago. You are more likely to get false negative, that has happend to alot of women. I would wait and if nothing happens by Friday test, if it's neg. the wait another week and test again if AF doesn't show up.

haha I've actually treated myself like I was pregnant for the last two months in preparation - vitamins, exercise, eating right, not drinking ect. So I've got that part down :)

LOL! Good going, you're doing better than me :)
It could also just still be your body adjusting, but we'll just hope for your sake you're preggers :)

I would LOVE if it was because I was preg. but I'm gonna keep telling myself that the sole reason is because my body is adjusting.

A similar thing happened to me when I first went off the pill, and I got my hopes up when I shouldn't have!
Everyone's different and it could be your body adjusting, but it could also be a BFP.
It would be awesome if you were so lucky! No need to temp and chart!

So I tested yesterday morning and it was neg. I was upset but not necessarily because I'm not pregnant, it would have been great if I was pregnant already - but we weren't officially starting until after this cycle anyways. I'm upset because if I am not pregnant I just want my period to hurry up and get here so we can start trying. Before I went on the pill I was pretty regular, so I hope that my body regulates itself quickly.
We are no longer using any sort of BC, but we won't "officially" be trying until I have my period because this cycle should be almost done. So come on period.... come quickly :)
I'm a little nervous about this period though. I originally went on the pill because I had awful cramps in high school - so much so that they would keep me in bed and out of school. This will be my first one since going on the pill 4 1/2 years ago.
Aww, I'm sorry. :( I understand your fear of how bad your period may be. I was on the pill for a little while in high school for the same reason. I feel like as I got older my periods weren't as extreme so hopefully the same will be true for you.
Jacklynn, sorry the test was negative. You know, before I got on the pill, I had very mild cramps (didn't even GET cramps until after I was 18). Once I was on the pill, the cramps were a nuisance, but not to bad. However, once I got off the pill my cramps were TERRIBLE. Hopefully your situation is reverse of mine - maybe you won't have real bad cramps :)

I'm so irritated lol. My period still has not came. How long did it take you girls to have your first one after going off of the pill? I was pretty regular before going on the pill, so I hope I haven't like screwed my body up haha
I am sad though that it hasn't came yet because it means it is just that much longer until we can get pregnant. We aren't using any thing to stop a pregnancy right now, so who knows maybe I just am skipping this last months period and will go on to ovulate this month anyways, you never know :)
The school year has been starting here at the Academy that I work at, which means 4 17 hour shifts back to back starting on this last Thursday through yesterday, and then 10 hours today. Maybe my body isn't rested enough to start (though I wasn't working those when I was a week late). I guess we shall see.

Hmm, I don't know. I think it varies a lot.... I stopped the pill in January, had my period after the last pack, and then didn't have one at all for 4 or so months, then got back on the pill. But, I was never regular before I got on BC, and you said you were, so hopefully your body will straighten itself out quicker than mine. Good luck!

I was on the pill for nearly 7 years and when I first got off, my cycle was 21 days, and my second one was 31 days, but now it stays at about 29 days.
Good luck! It's probably just a side effect of coming off the pill.

My body went crazy after stopping BC and here I am 2 years later and it's still not right. I'm CD45 as we speak. :irked: When I first went off, I had a year of cycles lasting 90 days or more.
But my best friend went off and a month later she was PG. She now has a 2 month old little boy and has returned to a normal cycle.
I hope you return to normal sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed.

I have still not started, which is soooo weird for me! Since I started my period in 6th grade I have never went more than 5 weeks without getting my next period. I tested almost a week ago and got a neg. result and would have thought I would have started by now. I seriously feel no signs of AF at all, no cramping or anything.
So should I take another test tomorrow? Do I just wait for AF to get here? Do I wait and test again when it would have been my NEXT missed period, so in two weeks? At what point should I go see a doctor to make sure everything is fine?

5 weeks? hmm perhaps a call into ur gyn would be in order to see what they'd recommend but it's not like taking an at-home test is hard... maybe both?

Sorry if I was confusing. Tomorrow I will be 2 weeks late, making it 6 weeks since the start of my last period. I've never been more than a week late and even before I went on BC 4 years ago it was rare for me to be more than 2-3 days late.
I took a test about a week ago that was neg. I'm not sure when I will take another one.

Wow, really? That's crazy! Did you doctor give you any explanation as to why that happened?
Sorry for hijacking.

I've known quite a few women that had to get a blood test and the pee tests didn't work. It's not too uncommon.... did you use the same brand or different brands of tests?
Jacklynn

I still have not started. I used a different brand (used Answer the first two times and the equate brand - which I've actually heard good things about - this last time) yesterday and still negative. I'm going to call my gyno since I'm now on the start of my second missed period, my last one was the 18th of July.
If I make an appointment with my gyno will she give me a blood test? Or do I need to go elsewhere for that? Assuming it is negative (if it isn't negative I've been having a great pregnancy so far haha no sickness no tiredness - nothing haha) will she have any sort of meds she can get me to get me to ovulate and start having periods again?
Wow almost 2 months.... If you have Kaiser, your gyno will order bloodwork and send you to the lab to get your blood drawn. I'm not sure how it works with other health care plans though. Other than that, I'm not much help :-/

I have an individual plan with BCBS of FL for health care. It is $45 copay I believe for a gyno appointment, and I think my plan covers 100% for blood work so maybe they will just send me down from there. How long does blood work usually take to get the results back?
I'm just getting really frustrated because if I'm not pregnant, and I don't feel preg, nor am I getting any positive results on tests, I just want to get my cycle going right so we can get pregnant.

Most OB/GYNs will do the blood test right away for you. Either there if they can or send you to where ever they send people to get blood work done. I know my doctor had the results the next day.
Hopefully you can get some answers too as to why things are held up and what can get things moving so you get her BFP asap!
My blood work results are usually back same day if I get it done in the morning, but in afternoon I get results the following day. I had BCBS of Illinois but can't remember the procedures.
