View Full Version : Decaf - whaddya think?
Most caffeine in decaf coffees is chemically separated (or so I've been told). Is this just pushing too far being nitpicky by being concerned or do you think that it's okay?
Also, I've heard (again, not confirmed) that most decaf is only 97% decaffeinated. Anyone have any facts/opinions on this?

In my recent quick search on the subject (to reply to your other thread), I found that most recommend to cut back to no more than one caffeine source a day or switch to decaf.
I would think if you only had a little (say one cup of coffee, tea or soda) each day, or just a bit from decaf then it should be too bad. I have heard some say that one glass of wine a day is not bad. But I would talk to a Dr. to be sure of what is best for you while TTC as well as being pregnant.

I think you're being nitpicky, but in a lovely protective manner. I don't think a little bit of caffeine here and there is going to harm you or the soon-to-be (I hope!) fetus. :bbmrgreen:

Hehe, I'm going to drink decaf regardless - just curious how everyone else feels about it :)

When I first started TTC I was super nitpicky. I didn't drink soda, coffee or decaf coffee, and I didn't even eat prepackaged food. :bbeek: It only took a month or two of being unsuccessful in achieving pregnancy to bring me back down to planet earth. A good friend told me that you can't completely turn your life upside when TTC because it will stress you out which is way worse then a cup of coffee.
So with that said, I enjoy life and partaking in the things I enjoy (in moderation) before ovulation such as coffee, wine and unpasteurized cheeses. But when I am in my 2WW I limited my caffeine intake to only 1 cup a day, no alcohol and no unpasteurized cheeses. I don't drink decaf anytime. This is just my opinion but it seems unnatural to me like Sweet'N Low, splenda and diet soda.
Danielle, can you please elaborate on the 'unpasteurized cheese' thing?
Thanks :)

Pregnant woman are not supposed to have anything that is unpasteurized because of the potential harmful bacteria on it. We as adults can eat it because we have fully formed immune systems, but fetuses do not have that.
This is also true with lunch meats and soft serve ice cream. Some people say you have have lunch meats if you microwave it from 30 seconds first and some say stay away from it all together.
Some soft cheeses -- such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined cheese, and Mexican-style cheese like "queso blanco fresco" -- and other dairy products made from unpasteurized milk (also called raw milk) can carry disease-causing organisms, including a potentially deadly bacterium called listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria infection (http://www.babycenter.com/0_listeriosis-during-pregnancy_9528.bc) is relatively rare. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that it affects 2,500 people in the United States every year and this number appears to be going down. But pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get it, and the infection can be devastating or even deadly for their baby.
Always check the label before eating soft cheese to be sure it's pasteurized. If you have any doubt -- for example, if it's served at a party and you can't look at the package -- don't eat it.
Cottage cheese, ricotta, cream cheese, processed cheese (such as American), and hard cheese (such as cheddar and Parmesan), as well as cultured dairy products like yogurt and buttermilk, are generally considered safe -- either because they’re made with pasteurized milk or because they're processed in ways that help inhibit the growth of the bacteria.
Keep in mind that it's important to keep cheese and other dairy products refrigerated to prevent the growth of other kinds of bacteria.

Yea, most likely that stuff is pasteurized. It's going to be hard for me when I finally do get pregnant cause I am having a secret affair with Blue cheese. Shhhh... don't tell my hubby! :nosey:
