PAINT stripper silly!!! :) :) :) LOL.

I have a hutch :whoohoo: that I wanna strip down to the wood and stain. I don't want to sand it if I can avoid sanding it.

Has anyone done this? I haven't had much experience working with - er - wood furniture :gurn:

The paint is on thick... probably a couple of layers. Anyone have a brand/quality recommendation?

Thanks!!!

I don't know anything about the stripper you speak of. The ones I know couldn't help you with furniture...:panda:

LOL Gwen!

Well it appears that the only thing Home Depot carries that's paint unfriendly is thinner (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&N=5yc1vZ1xgtZaq5w&R=100303828)... which I know will work, but I thought there was such thing as STRIPPER.. like to strip the paint completely. Time to keep shopping......

Instead of using chemicals. Try a heat gun if they have them in the US. They are a lot easier and quicker than paint stripper.

When you said "Hutch" i was expecting to see a picture of a Rabbit Hutch.

So that's either the same as a dresser or you are expecting two very big bunnies.

I'll look into the heat gun thing.... it may cost a lot more than remover though and I'm kinda on a budget of $0.00 because I told Matt it was free LOL.

Rabbit hutch? hahahahaaa...... Nah, not a dresser - it's for my kitchen for food and dishes :)

No experience but thought of the other kind of stripper at first and wondered why that was in this forum ;)

Good luck with your little project; let us know how it turns out.

Formby's is what my mom always used. You put it on and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes and then using a rubber or plastic paint scrapper the old paint comes off. It doesn't raise the grain of the wood so you don't have to do a hard sand.

Justina, no experience here, but if you do go the chemical route make sure you do it in a well ventilated space or use a ventilator. It's not good to breathe in those fumes especially when TTC. Good Luck!! :)

Which is what a Kitchen Dresser is used for in the UK. If you are lucky enough to have the room for one.

If it's used solely for food then it becomes a "Larder".

If you use it to display China then some say it's a Welsh Dresser.

Confused yet?

Can't wait to see it when it's undressed from the green coat and the wood shines through again.
It sometimes makes me wonder what goes through peoples minds when they paint over beautiful wood like that. :bbeek:

Interesting.... so that's what a Larder is. I never knew that but I read of it in novels.

I can't wait till the green is gone as well. I'm hoping it's actually WOOD. I'm only concerned because it's very light weight....

Okay, so this hutch is wayyyy more detailed than I thought - and the INSIDE is green as well :irked: I started PAINTING it today. I am painting the base white and I'm going to accent it with light blue. However... I've been going at it for over an hour and probably have put about 5 coats of white on it and it's still streaky. :irked: Okay... so I'm giving it a little break and then I'm going to put another coat on the entire thing.

I've only just started on the bottom half. I haven't even wiped off the top half yet. Even just painting it is taking a heck of a lot longer than I expected it to. Oh well - it'll be worth it in the end.

So it's almost 100* outside and that's where I'm painting. The paint I'm painting with is drying on top which is leaving chunks! UGGGHHHH!!! So I'm trying to paint fast - but I'm so sore LOL! Yesterday I worked my butt off and I'm sore from that, and painting today isn't helping hehehe.

Did you use a primer? It will help the new paint stick better and result in less coats needed. Good luck!

I'm just using the paint we had left over from when we painted the inside of the house. It just dawned on me I could have SPRAYED it for better than what the brush is doing. Oh welll. Lesson is being learned.

Kilz costs a grip around here. I didn't want to spend any extra $$ on the project - so I guess I'm kinda payin for it in time and muscles lol.

We've been spray painting the doors on our kitchen units. We've managed to do half of them. Works out a lot cheaper than new doors. ($1,800 for doors vs $60 for spray paint)

The trick is to spray each coat the opposite way. Top to bottom first coat, side to side second coat. I guess the same technique can apply to hand painting. Plus rub down the wood between each coat. This helps the next layer stick and stops ridges, bumps and blemishes.

Can't wait to see when you've finished Justina.

Might give me some inpiration to get off my *** and finish our doors.

Okay, well I got pics!

Progress....

I believe I'll run another coat like Mitch said - opposite of the grain, then another one going with the grain... on the base - then do the same with the top when I get to it.

Now, should I paint the inside? I have cupboard doors........... Pics are out of order -sorry!

SWEET!!!! I think I will do that. I hate that the inside of the base is going to be green - but at least I'll have solid doors covering it. It'd be a PITA to paint the inside with a brush. Hmm.. I could just spray it instead. But then I have 2 different whites. Forget that lol.

I would go with the heat gun as well that way you aren't breathing in the chemicles which are really bad and can burn your skin. plus a heat gun is always worth the investment. You use the heat gun and a putty knife and the paint comes right off but you still need to use a fine grit sandpaper to finish and give it an even look.

Looking good there kiddo. ;) It might be the 100 degree heat that's making it streak. Heat does strange things to paint. Making it turn like treacle etc.

As for the inside. I too would go with Blue. But only where the glass doors are. Saves a lot of work only having to do half of it. Plus the Blue might be easier to go over the Green. White over any colour is a pain.

The bottom part being Green inside wont notice once you have bits and pieces inside.

Unless of course i fly over to the US. Open the cupboards and point it out to anyone looking.

You're right Mitch - I think the heat had a lot to do with the paint not working right. Oh well.. It's finals week, so I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to work in it again before Monday. I'm hoping it doesn't rain before then. I'd like to finish it by the following weekend and have it in the house by my first open house on October 10. :crossfingers:

Blue it is - for the top inside... and I want to do blue on a few more areas, not sure where though.

Okay so I spent the whole evening working on the top half of the hutch. I was just going to do the inside blue... then I figured I was going to go over whether I did the white or blue on the outside. Now I'm considering doin the whole thing blue and leaving the drawer and cabinet faces white. Whaddya'll think??

The base is white.... what do you think about the base being white with blue faces, and the top being blue with white faces? Too much????

I have pics but I can't get the stinkin uploader to work right now. I'm waiting on photobucket to finish loading the camper pics (it's goin VERY slow...) then i'll post pics.

Here we go:

when I started this evening... I pulled out the drawers. I flipped over a drawer as a little black spider crawled into it.... and as I flipped it I saw the biggest black widow I've EVER seen - and I've seen a LOT of them. I didn't have the camera at the time or I'da got a pic of her... she was a good 2" in diameter with the legs just standing - the body was about 3/4" alone!

Right after I started on it:

I think this will help. ( at least I hope, lol). But i have a daughter and every time she writes on my walls i use nail polish remover to take off the marker, crayon, pen, etc. I forgot who taught me that, but I noticed that when I would do it, it stripped the paint as well! So maybe try mixing nail polish remover with paint thinner to see if it will speed up the process, just dont blow anything up while youre at it! hahaha

Thanks! I like the white on top as well... it was a bit of a pain.. added a couple days of painting to the job, but it'll be worth it in the end. I'm painting white over blue now so I still have to put like 20 coats of white over the blue.
