Hello all!!! I am another refugee from UW!! I am glad to have found this place though. I was starting to feel lost without wedding message boards. LOL Anyway, first a little about myself. My name is Deidre and my FH is Nick and we are from California. We got engaged last December and are currently planning our wedding for 2008, hopefully June 28, 2008.
*****How We Met*****
So, Nick and I didn't meet in the "conventional" way. I was in a chat room one night and just randomly introduced myself to the group. He said hi to me and when I asked what school he went to, he told me he went to the same junior college I did! So, I decided to keep talking to him. We talked for awhile, every time we would see each other online. Finally, I told him I had a boyfriend and that pretty much ended our friendship. He was looking for a girlfriend and I wasn't available. Fast forward to 5 months later. My boyfriend and I broke up (well, I guess we did since he just stopped talking to me completely and never told me why) and I was in Indiana visiting family. Well, when I told him I was single, he wanted to get together that night!! Unfortunately, I was in Indiana so that wasn't really possible. We finally ended up meeting about 3 weeks later at a McDonald's down the street from school. When I walked in and realized who he was (I hadn't seen a picture of him yet either), I almost walked out. He just wasn't drop dead gorgeous to me. But lucky for me, I stayed and met the most amazing guy I had ever met!!

Okay, so a little background before I get into the proposal. When we started dating, we both thought we were just going to have a summer fling, it wasn't going to work and that was that. But, that didn't happen. I always told him my plan was to go away to 4 year college in San Diego, CA because they have the best accounting program there. Well, since we never thought we would be together that long, he didn't worry himself with it. 1.5 years after we met, we were still together and I transferred down to San Diego State. That began a tumultous period of our relationship and 2.5 yrs of long distance. Now, I don't recommend long distance relationships to everyone, but for us, it was the best thing possible. We were able to grow up while still being together yet apart at the same time. The reason why I am bringing this up is that everyone in our families thought after I graduated, the engagement would happen. WRONG!!! Nick waited another 2 years before he would propose and we got so sick of hearing "when are you getting married? what's taking so long?" Well, after everyone heard how he proposed, that stopped!
******The Proposal!!******
Disneyland is our absolute favorite place to be! When we first started dating (god, I have been saying that a lot!), we found out that one of the things we had in common was our love for Disneyland. So, it made sense that our first vacation together was to Disneyland! Well, for our second vacation, we went back and it was during the 45th anniversary celebration. We took our picture in front of Sleeping Beauty's castle and we made a deal that trip that if we were still together in 2005 for the 50th celebration, we would take another picture in front of the castle to update it.
We went to Disneyland the Sunday before Christmas because he wanted to update our christmas picture, get our 50th anniversary picture in front of the castle and also because he wanted to see Disneyland all decked out in the christmas decorations. So, we drove up from San Diego, walked into the park and took our new christmas picture in front of the big christmas tree they have on Main Street. After the picture, we walk down Main Street towards the castle and as we get closer to the castle we see this HUGE crowd of people. Before I can even say, what is going on, we look and see Mickey is climbing the Matterhorn. So, we waited about 20 minutes for Mickey to climb up the mountain and to give time for the crowd that had formed to clear so it wasn't insane in front of the castle. During all of this, Nick is just completely annoyed and flustered and I had no idea why. We walk over to the castle and start to pose for pictures. After we had taken two pictures, the cast member wanted us to put our hands together so they can put Tinkerbell in the picture. Nick stops him and says, "There is something I have to do first" and the next thing I know, he is pulling a black velvet box out of his pocket and is dropping to one knee. Of course, I start crying instantaneously and say, " Are you kidding me!!!!" and all I can see is this ring just sparkle ( I will post pictures when I can!!). I was in utter disbelief. I have no idea what he said and even if he did ask me to marry him but I finally said, "are you going to put the ring on my finger?" His answer was, "yes, as soon as you take your promise ring off of your left hand!" As it turns out, everyone in his family and my parents, brother and girlfriend all had known since Thanksgiving this was going to happen and nobody told me. But, if I had known, the proposal wouldn't have been as great as it was!!

I just went to random easy threads and posted. Look for the ones that don't require much though. There are a few about how long you've been together, how tall you both are and things like that. Those help build up your number of posts.

Hi Deidre...so happy to see you! I was beginning to feel lost with only Beckiii and I from our circle...any word from anyone else?

I found Sarah (Serda23) on myspace and sent her a message but I didn't really communicate with others other than the boards so that is making this really tough!!!

No kidding...I had Rebecca (rbloom), Beckiii and Beth because of their businesses, but that was about it! And I don't have myspace so I haven't got any of those connections. Sadness.
But, on the bright side, I think the influx of UW girls is actually helping this board grow and mature a little :)

I'm just glad we've got some familiar faces here (and that I like all the new ones so far :) )

I totally agree Beckiii...something good comes out of our move, we meet new people, and get to keep a good bunch of the old people.
I'm pretty sure we've even surpassed the 15 from the move from WC to UW :)
Deidre98
07-10-2006, 11:28 PM
I am sure we surpassed the 15 from the other move but I do miss some of the culties!! LOL I hope we can make this community grow into a great place for brides. And if Beth is here as a vendor, that is even better for the brides. She has so many good ideas that it would be a shame for her advice to be unheard.

No kidding...my wedding will be better because of her. She was the one who encouraged me to find out how to get a caterer on the approved list for my venue!

My ring...
When I was younger, I really wanted a round diamond with blue sapphires on either side. Then one day we walked into Tiffany's and I saw the ring I wanted. It was .75 carat round diamond in the middle with round diamonds all the way around with a matching wedding band. I fell in love with it but the more we were looking, the more I noticed Nick really like the 3 stone engagement rings. I thought they were nice too but it wasn't the ring I saw. So, at that point, I decided that whatever ring I got, I would be happy with because he picked it out for me. So, when we got engaged, I had no clue where this ring came from. I had never seen it before ever!!! I ask him, where did you get this ring from? He told me that it was his great aunt's wedding ring that his great uncle designed especially for her. We figured it is about 60 years old. The only thing that is different about my ring is that the center stone before was set in the ring and now it is popped up a bit so it looks like an engagement ring. I am more in love with my actual ring now than the Tiffany's one just because it is a family heirloom and it is so unique. I love knowing that I won't walk down the street and see someone else wearing my ring!!

Things we have decided on...
*For our first dance as husband and wife, we are dancing to "My Best Friend" by Tim McGraw. It has been "our" song since it came out on his CD and Nick picked it out for us.
*Father-Daughter dance will be "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw. Before I head this song, I actually wanted to use "My Little Girl" by Steve Kirwan. I heard that song on an episode of Days Of Our Lives last summer and fell in love with it...well, until I heard the one by Tim McGraw and decided the words of this song fit better than the other one did!
*We aren't doing the garter or bouquet toss since the majority of our friends and family are married or seriously dating (almost engaged) so there really aren't any single people that will be at the wedding, unless you count my 2nd cousins who are all under the age of 12.
*We also aren't doing any favors. Instead, we are donating them to charities. Some of the charities we are thinking of is breast cancer research and prostate cancer research because Nick lost his aunt earlier this year to breast cancer and my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004. Even though he is healthy now, it still hits close to home because I watched him go through it.
*The other thing I want to do is a rememberance table. Both my grandparents and Nick's grandparents have all passed on and since we both were so close to our grandparents, we thought it would be a nice way to remember them and have them with us on our special day.
*I am going to wear my grandmother's pearls on my wedding day and my mom has said she wants to find me pearl and diamond earrings to match the pearls and my diamond earrings I wear in my 2nd hole.
*Oh!! I almost forgot! We also have our wedding picked out even though the only 2 people that know they are going to be in our wedding is my MOH and Nick's BM. I am going to have my brother's girlfriend, Nick's sister (who used to be a wedding coordinator, how great is that!), and Nick's cousin (who is the sweetest thing ever and is so excited we are getting married) as my BM's. Nick is going to have my brother, his BIL and his cousin as his GM. We also aren't having a RB or FG because there are way too many little kids in my family to have to decide between them all. We have 11 little kids (ages range from being born in July to 12) in our family and I just don't want to deal with family drama.
*Centerpieces..

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d820b3127cce8a4385b2890100000015100AbMXLNs5csW LA
The only difference is that the candle will be in either pink or red depending on what I decide to do for wedding colors.

Engagement party...
On August 26th, our families are hosting an engagement party at my brother's AKA my grandmother's house for us. Here are the invitations that just went out a few weeks ago...
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d800b3127cce8af5587199a700000015100AbMXLNs5csW LA
For all of you from UW that know the saga of the party, things are going fine. Mom is just planning her head off and we have already gotten a ton of RSVP's back. Nobody has called and said no yet except for my cousin who is pregnant and having complications from the pregnancy. The most surprising yes was from Nick's cousin and her FH/soon to be husband because they are getting married the weekend before!!! But, they said they wouldn't miss it for the world. AWWW....how great are they???

Yeah, we are pretty surprised about it. I guess I should've just backed out of the planning from the start especially now that we are moving in the middle of it all. Things work out the way they are supposed to and I should know that by now.

07-11-2006, 12:49 AM
SO wait! You got the condo????
Deidre98
07-11-2006, 12:52 AM
No, sorry to get your hopes up. We won't know that until the end of the week but no matter what happens with the condo, we are still moving out of our complex. We have an apartment on hold with another complex that has a washer and dryer in the apartment.
Beckiii
07-11-2006, 12:54 AM
I'm still happy for you. Having the machines IN your apt would be a perk. My fingers are still crossed for you.
Deidre98
07-11-2006, 12:59 AM
Trust me, after doing both of our laundry tonight (at least 2 weeks worth!!) I will be so excited to have those machines inside and not have to lug laundry anymore. Keep those fingers crossed. I think we impressed her though. Nick called her today to see how things were going and to get an idea of when she will know if we got it or not and she was surprised and impressed that we called back so fast. It shows we really want the place and we are responsible enough to call back!! I hope we get it!
Beckiii
07-11-2006, 01:00 AM
I hope you get it too! Now you'd be renting?
Deidre98
07-11-2006, 01:03 AM
Yes, we would be renting. There is no way we can afford to buy where we are. A one bedroom condo in the same area we are in right now is selling for $382k. Our monthly payment alone would be over $2k and with my job messing with my pay at the moment, there is no way we can afford it.
Beckiii
07-11-2006, 01:05 AM
I understand that. If we didn't buy when we did, we'd be doing the same because Naples is at that same price range :( At least you'll be getting a better place in the end - who cares if you own or rent so long as you like where you live :)
Deidre98
07-11-2006, 01:08 AM
And this place, even though it is a one bedroom is great! It has a 2 car garage so we are going to have a ton of storage space, it still has a pool/spa, it has AC, a woodburning fireplace, we have no neigbors above us or below us and we don't have to worry about rent increases because it is through a private landlord! Sorry, I am really excited about this place, if you haven't noticed.
Beckiii
07-11-2006, 09:50 AM
I don't blame you for being excited. That sounds pretty great to me! :)

I'm so glad to see some more familiar faces in your journal Deidre!
Welcome everyone :)
And don't worry, I did without indoor laundry for 2 years and can't go back either. In fact when we were moving from our apt into our house I didn't do laundry for a month because I wanted to wait until I could do it without walking across the complex and wrestling with the passcard scanner, lol. It was getting tricky to find clothes - all I had left were scrubby clothes or formalwear, lol. Makes going to work interesting ;)

Brooke, once I catch up, I will run on over and find your journal.
Sarah, welcome!!! I am glad you joined us and thanks for getting a hold of Maggie, Kayleen and DeAnne. Hopefully they will make their way over here as well.
Kat-I am so glad you came over to visit!! It's funny how we recognize people's names from UW but never really got the chance to get to know each other over there. Hopefully we can get to know more people here!!
Becki-i can't believe how many people we have found!! I am excited!! If I went without doing laundry for a month, I would be showing up to work naked and our bed sheets would start to stink because we only have 2 sets!! LOL

Oh don't get me wrong. Dan did laundry. I didn't, lol. I don't do his laundry even now. It's just one of those chores we've decided to keep separate. Fortunately he washed sheets ;)

Dan and I have a deal. He does his laundry and I do mine. We split the sheets and towels.
Deidre98
07-11-2006, 09:04 PM
I wish he could make that kind of deal with me! Actually, I don't mind doing laundry, it's the lugging it around the corner to the laundry room is what kills me. Nick's deal with me last night was that I do the laundry and put it away and he cooked dinner and cleaned up after dinner. I guess that will have to do. LOL
Beckiii
07-11-2006, 09:06 PM
We've got all sorts of deals like that. I keep the house clean, but don't do bathrooms at all because the cleaning products give me headaches. I make dinner; he sets the table and cleans up. It works well for us. Of course who knows how it will work after we have kids :bbeek:

What do you mean you're kidding? We really were lonely yesterday :frown: . Looks like all all hard work and scrambling has gotten us all back together again. :detective:

I know we were!! I am so glad that the scrambling worked out and we are all back together again. This time we need to exchange contact info that way if this happens AGAIN, we can keep in contact. What do you think??

I was doing the same thing until I remembered I had Becki's jewelry site bookmarked and left her a message in her guest book. By that time, it was Sunday night and I had gone a whole weekend without my journal buddies. Nick could see how bummed I was too so he was happy that I was happy last night when I got on here.

Definitely, we need to exchange info. I mean I can always be reached through the email on my site, but it would be nice to have email for everyone anyway.
Soooo, PM me with email if you don't want me to miss you in case anything happens again, lol. If you don't care, don't ;)

I think Raif appreciates a little more how much the boards helped me when I was like, argh, I need to ask about blah blah blah when the boards went down. He definitely appreciates it more now! He even let me post pics of him ("As long as they aren't embarassing!")

I never asked Dan about posting his pic. I just did it and told him he didn't have a choice, lol.

I never asked Nick either. He just told me not to post the embarrassing pic I had of him from Disneyland but well, I posted it anyway. Yeah, I listen well!! LOL

Raif's a private person and I think he would've gotten upset if I posted it without him knowing...so I asked, and received ;)

She's still a year out you guys... give her time and she'll be just like us, posting pics, making decisions without him and whatnot! ;)

Heck, I am about 2 years out and I am not asking on the picture issue! The only things I am asking him on is venue, what he wears, DJ and food. Everything else, I am taking care of!!

Nah, see, we have the religion thing that I'm trying to be careful of...so it's more like, "Honey, if I do this, will I offend the rabbi?"

Well, today, I believe that boys really ARE dumb. My FH is up in northern CA for work and for some personal things and today he went and saw his sister and our new niece who is 11 days old. I guess his mom, dad, sister and him got to talking about our wedding and what our plans are. He had no clue. Then when he was talking to me, he started asking me questions like why haven't we started looking for a venue, what our budget is, etc. I already get testy because I have been trying for months (you UW girls know this!) to get him to start looking and when he does, he looks at Vegas, which I have already vetoed. So for the budget I say I think we have around $20K-25K. That seems reasonable to me. We are planning on inviting around 150-175 but only 100-125 of those will actually show mainly because we are sending out invites on my side to relatives on the east coast who we know won't show but they would be offended if they didn't get an invite. He then tells me that we have an unrealistic budget for that many people. Excuse me?????? I think we can have a wonderful wedding for that kind of money with that many people if I am a fruzilla (that's for you Beth!!) about things. It can be done. Then he gets all irritated because I don't have the answers to which I say I have been trying but its hard to do anything when you are stonewalled when you ask for help. He didn't believe he was stonewalling me on the issue!! Ummm...yes you have been!!! Ugh boys are dumb!

Okay, so not much has been happening besides annoying family members who are adding people to the guest list for the engagement party. The only other thing that is going on is that I got the bracelets and cards to ask my BM and MOH to be in the wedding! I will take pics so you all can see the hard work done by my wonderful journal buddies on here. Thanks to Becki and Rebecca for all of their hard work!

Oh! The other thing I am doing is tracking what I am eating on a daily basis, exercising more and cutting out soda all together. I am trying to lose 55 lbs by June 28, 2008 (if not more) and I figure this is a good start.
