I'm back!! :o I apologize for the long absence, just been busy.
I am going to pick up my dress from David's Bridal Wednesday. I'm SO excited. The 2 things that mom, the moh, and I are worried about is storing the dress and the alterations. The people at David's Bridal told my mom that the dress had to be altered when we went in to pick it up. That poses a slight problem for me. My wedding isn't for 2 years so I could gain or lose weight and have to get the dress re-altered. We were going to wait to have it done. I wonder if David's Bridal will let us do that? :snide:
We are still trying to figure out how to store it. My moh suggested I go ahead and get it preserved. That's going to cost a lot to do though. I was thinking more of putting it in a garmet bag and storing it in a closet. My uncle has a cedar-lined closet that doesn't have very many clothes in there. Do any of you think that would be a good idea to store it in there? I am just worried about it yellowing and wearing down before the wedding.
If you could please help me out, I'd appreciate it! :)

I think keeping it in the garment bag in the closet is just fine. Maybe pull it out every so often and try it on for fun too! :) Two years is a long time! I would wait on the alterations just to be safe.
Welcome back! :)

Yeah, I thought about the garment bag. My mom (who is paying for the dress) was told by David's Bridal that when we went in to pick up the dress I had to get fitted and do the alterations then. We are going to talk to them when we go to pick it up Wednesday and see if there is any way I can wait. There is a possibility that I could gain/lose weight before the wedding and if I get the alterations I don't want to have to go to the hassle of re-altering it if I do gain/lose weight.
I told my MOH where my mom suggested storing it and she's worried about moths getting into it. I told her that the closet is lined with cedar to keep away those pesky things. My mom has a bridesmaid's dress that she wore still stored in that closet and it still looks brand new. :) I just hope that my dress doesn't get damaged or ruined while being stored in that closet. :petrified:

As long as plastic isn't stored against the dress it should be fine. Plastic tends to "Sweat". I would advise to put a pure cotton sheet over it before putting it in the bag.
My wedding dress from my first marriage in 1992 is stored in cotton and then shrink-wrapped into one of those air-tight bags. The ones that you suck the air out of using a vacuum cleaner.
Last time i looked at it was 10 Years after i got married. My Parents had written letters to me. And when Dad died i opened the dress to get the letters. The dress was still as good as new. :)
The dress i wore at my wedding last October is stored in a large dress bag. Along with the underskirt tied to the hanger inside the dress. The bag has been moved on several occassions and nothing has damaged it. It has been hung on backs of doors. In the wardrobe (Closet). Back out again. From the curtain pole. From a hook in the ceiling inside a walk in wardrobe. Basically anywhere there is space.
I got the bag from eBay and it was a bit more expensive than any bag the Bridal Shops will hand out. But the investment in good storage was worth the extra. Plus my one is Black. So no light gets in to damage the material. I picked Black because i had to walk through the Hotel i work in the day before the wedding. I didn't want people to see the dress. :winktongue:

When you say pure cotton sheet, what do you mean? Just curious.
I am already looking on Amazon.com for garment bags. I just don't know what to buy. There are a lot of them on there. :whyme:
Do you think that David's Bridal would actually have a garment bag that I could buy? All of this stuff is starting to get overwhelming to me! :purplex:

I mean something like Egyptian Cotton. It doesn't attract moths or bugs etc. It is more expensive than normal cotton sheeting. But IMO the best available.
Wrap the dress in the sheet and then place in the bag.
Here's one similar to mine. Found on eBay US. Less than $10 with shipping.

As for DB having a bag. I have no idea being from the UK. Good Luck.

Thanks for the link to the wedding gown bag. I saw something similar from the same seller on Amazon.com.
Well the closet I will be storing it in is cedar-lined. That's supposed to keep out bugs. Would I still need the Egyptian cotton sheet? I don't have that much money right now to go be buying something that's expensive.

Yesterday, when I got my dress, David's Bridal sold me their garment bag. It was only $10. I don't know how long my dress is going to keep in that bag though. It seems flimsy and feels like it's vinyl. Should I purchase another bag or keep this one? :snide:

I bought my dress 2 years before my wedding and kept it in the garment bag DB sold me as well. I didn't get my alterations done till the last 8 months before my wedding. There is no point in getting alterations done with your wedding being in 2 years. I had no problem with it, the only thing I had a problem with was the wrinkling of the crenilin..(sp??) So i just got a damp rag and threw it in the dryer for 15 mins. Wa la.. all straightened out..:) The lady that did my alterations, stemed my dress for me after getting all the alterations done for me. I would say wait for the alterations.

I am waiting to get it altered. I talked with the alterations department and they said it was fine for me to wait til a few months before the wedding. They gave me March 30,2011, for the appointment date. That may change though because I feel that is too close to the wedding date.
