I don't know why but for the life of me I always forget how to spell "original" and always have to spell check it.

So, do you have a certain word(s) you never remember how to spell??

Well being English and with the American spellings around here. Which one of us is right or wrong with "Colour", "Favour" and "Jewellery"

As for spell checking. I have never been able to remember how to spell "Secretary". I always get the E and R round the wrong way like "Secertary" But then i'm spelling it how my daft English accent speaks it. :whyme:

Even in old school books i've found. The teacher has put a big red line through and corrected it.

This is more of a mis-writing error than a misspelling error... but I was taught that everyone in Russia writes in cursive (Not true, as I learned...), so all the Russian I handwrite is the Russian cursive. The Russian version of "D", Д (д), looks like the English cursive "D" when capitalized and "G" when lowercase. Well, when writing the wedding invites, a few of the addresses I substituted G's for D's because in my mind I was in "heavy cursive mode". Instead of Anderson, Angerson, etc.

The sad thing... it looked correct to me. :bbeek: FH had to point it out, but he doesn't speak Russian so he was wondering what I was smoking!

Of all the letters that cross over (like their V looks like our B and so forth) that is the only letter I make errors with.

I thought of another one. Decision - for some reason it never looks right to me.

when writing, i never have to worry about spelling, idk why, but it was/is always has been important to me to always make sure my spelling was correct, especially since my handwriting to used to be horrible-i figured, even if it looks crappy, i should spell right ;)

typing is a whole other story! i always miss letters!

Restaurant

I have to sound it out in my head every time I write it: Rest AU Rant

I forget where the U goes.

Anything with ei and ie

The whole I before E except after C doesn't cover it all. Their doesn't have a c so the rule goes down the drain.

If it helps, the rule is "I before E except after C or a long A sound"

Like Weigh, Neigh, Their (I've heard people say it like "Thayr" LOL.)

BUT! You are correct, it's only a "most of the time" rule, not an "every single IE word rule :)

You're right - IE words get me too. Receipt gets me - what the heck is the P doing in there!

Their (I've heard people say it like "Thayr" LOL.)

Now I'm confused! That's how I say it--how do you say it? And now I'm sitting here saying it to myself to make sure I really do.... yeah, I say it like air, but their. Thair. :o

I've always been really good at spelling, but the one word I *always* catch on is vacuum. I know for sure there is a double U, but it takes me a minute to remember if there is a double C. Maybe because raccoon is double C. Or maybe not :)

I say "their" like "ther", with a soft e sound, not a.

However, when it comes to "they're", I say "thayr".

Hahhaaa... Vacuum gets my mom all the time - but she spells it "Vaccume" LOL.

I say it the same as I say there. I didn't know there were other ways to say their.

Yes! Vacuum is mine! I have to always spell it twice before I realize it's 2 U's. In general I'm a pretty good speller though...:)

My friend has always spelled "crazy" as "crasy" - it has driven me bloody crazy for 16 years...LOL...

Ha Ha

There is a standing joke at work when someone needs to know how to spell something. They all come to me and say, Weren't you the spelling champ in 5th grade? How do you spell ?????

So with much dignity, I straighten my shoulders, lift my chin, and say Yes, I was the 5th grade spelling champion, what can I do for you?

Not on topic AT ALL... But i think Russian looks neat. :chimp:

I'm with you on those .... and also grey & neighbour :)

I attended an English school however all but one of my classes were in French; grade 4-8. As such, I often spell things the French way .... by adding an E before any word ending in MENT.

Definitely is one word that I always screw up.
