View Full Version : Quitting Coffee

For the fifth time in my life, I am quitting it... It's expensive and it's staining my teeth, and I'm getting a bit dependent on it.
This is day three. It sucks, I'm exhausted and just want to sleep. I'm also feeling a bit hungrier.
Has anyone else done this? Have any tips?

Ooh, I haven't tried to quit coffee (I don't drink it that much), but I have tried to quit soda in the past - I have probably between 2 and 5 glasses every day! If I quit cold turkey, I get really bad headaches and get quite cranky.
My suggestion - ween yourself. Instead of going cold turkey, cut down by volume, or by type (maybe adding more milk as time passes or something like that).
Good luck!!!

I have not done it, I'm hopelessly addicted to coffee as well. I wish you good luck though! I know how you feel, one morning without coffee and I'm looking to take a nap by noon.

No advice, but wish you well! :goodluck:
I don't think I ever was really addicted/dependant on it, but I stopped drinking it a long time ago. It started to give me headaches. So now I drink decaf or just hot chocolate these days, but only when it is cold out.
I still drink soda sometimes, but pretty much only on the weekends.

ugh i once had to quite ALL caffeine cold turkey due to a medical condition...
i don't really have advice other than it will get better soon! once ur body adjusts u won't miss it at all
i went back to drinking soda but don't drink NEARLY as much as i did before... i also started drinking coffee n have about 2 cups a day during the week, none on weekends... i think if i were u i'd start out by weaning myself... maybe by either making weaker coffee.... or cut out a cup or two... (idk how much u drink/day)

I've been down this road many times myself. I suggest weening as well. Try 1/2 caff but of course you have to drink less too at some point. I've been able to do it with only mild headaches and tiredness but when it gets to be winter/cold, I always start right back up again! Good luck!!!
I did it - I went from 2-3 sixteen oz cups a day to nothing. I cut down for about a week to just 1 sixteen oz cup a day, then stopped. I had constant headaches when I was ON caffeine, and when I quit, my headaches were gone 3 days after I quit. Also, when I accidently drink something with caffeine in it, my headaches come back like clockwork.
I say drink those little crystal light mixers with your water - it's something flavorful and they're not just plain ol' water.
Good luck!

Thanks for the support ladies! :D
I was drinking about 16 oz a day, really strong, then I cut it to 8 oz, still strong because it tastes bad weak, and now I'm off. I'm shocked how calmer (ie Zombie like) I am. It's not a lot if coffee relative to the habits of a lot of people I know, but it was still too much. I'm hoping that I'll feel a bit healthier without it.
My fiance thinks that just drinking four oz a day wouldn't be too bad, as something to sustain, because I do *like* coffee a lot... but I was too dependent. Or like four oz of decaf.
Justina, you just reminded me... I can make iced tea! I have mint and red teas and those are pretty much caffeine free. Hmmmm.... :)
Iced tea still has caffeine. I don't know if your goal here is to get rid of coffee, or caffeine or both, but most teas have caffeine unless they say otherwise on the package. However, you can get caffeine free iced tea ;)

Iced tea only has caffeine if it's black, white or green, which means it's legitimate tea. Red or mint, the ones I posted, and other herbs aren't technically tea, they are tea in name only, even the roobibos isn't actually from the tea plant like green, white or black tea. I get the herb "teas". It's like I went to the backyard and brewed my plants - it won't have caffeine. (Though basil tea might taste weird...;) )
Double checked the packaging, it all says caffeine free. And now it's in the refrigerator, and I've got some honey waiting for it... :d

I quit coffee - well, sort of. :) I used to drink 3 or 4 large coffees a day - I lived on coffee! Eventually I weened it down to only 1 small cup a day, and now I probably only have that 2 or 3 times a week. I definitely don't need it anymore.
But doing it gradually really helped me. I like the idea of drinking some caffeine free iced tea. That'll probably really help - and it'll be refreshing! :)
