Why do some fish jump out of the tank when their is no lid, but some are fine in a bowl/tank with no lid ... anyone know?

This is something I have always wondered and Breckan's post about cleaning her son's fish tank reminded me ;)

I think some species (like bettas) are just jumpers and others aren't.

It's a flight response from fish to jump too, they just instinctually assume there will be water there :X
