I guess this is sort of like the "tomAto, toma(h)to" thing ;)

So how do you say it?

*poll coming*

Although I did say "ant" when I was growing up, because everyone in my family did, I say AUnt now ;)

It's more natural for me to say "Ant" than the AUnt, but I've been trying to say AUnt because I went through a linguistically conscious phase and realized that Ant isn't exactly right.

I think it is a cultural/regional thing in how it is pronouced, but I guess it is fine either way.

I was just curious what was the most popular. Looks like it is closer than I thought; at least so far ;)

I say "ant"

DH says "AUntie" when referring to his aunts. When he refers to my aunts, he usually says "ant" LOL

Although i wasn't born in London. I have an East London accent. (Dad was from the East End. Mum was from North London). I had to vote other because i pronounce it "aren't".

But then again i'm always being ribbed for my accent.
DH is from the North East and has a totally different dialect to me. He uses different words for the same thing.
I say a baker makes a "Roll" He says they are "Bread Buns".
I say "Chewing Gun" He says "Chuddy".
I say "Strop" He says "Radge"

I say things like:
Husband spoken as "Usband". I am forever dropping "H's" which is a pain because the town i live in starts with H.
Certificate is "Sir-stiff-e-caut"

And one i am always being pulled for.
Across is said "Across-ed" As in "I went acrossed the road".

It's always been AUnt for me.

It's funny, because when we go to Vermont to visit FH's family, and his mom is talking about his aunt, she's calls her "arnie" instead of auntie. It's funny and interesting to hear people's different sayings of certain words.

Ant for me.... Antie is a lot easier to blurt out than Auntie LOL.

I've always said it "ant" and it just sounds better to me that way. I heard both growing up, but it was always ant in my family. I'd feel weird saying AUnt.

Sort of related... DH calls his aunts "auntie" (pronounced "antie") and I think it sounds so weird. I hope I never am expected to say it, and I wonder what will happen when we have kids. I can't say it--it just sounds SO weird to me.

I say ant! I only know of one person around here that says AU-nt and it just sounds sooo ridiculous coming out of her mouth because to me AUnt just sounds so refined and she is about as far from refined as you can get!! lol

Ok, I'm totally the weird one, because if I'm referring to a specific person I'll say "ANT Susie", but if I'm saying it in a sentence I'll say "Jen and her AUNT".

I'm all sorts of messed up...:bbeek:
