View Full Version : Horrible Noise.

So I got in my car and started driving down the street. The radio is on, some Nelly Furtado song - I'm not a big fan of hers, but this was the worst song ever. There was this unbearable screeching noise in the background. :bbeek: Annoyed, I changed the radio channel, only to discover that the screeching noise was not Ms. Furtado, but is coming from my beloved car, Starla. (Yes, my car has a name...)

So it's sitting up at the 76 station and they're taking a look at it. They think it has something to do with the ABS, but the ABS light wasn't on. They put in brake fluid and that didn't seem to make it stop, then he banged it with a screwdriver (some newfangled technique?) and that *seemed* to make it stop...but I left it up there for them to mess with, change the oil, and monitor it. He said the brakes might need some work.

I swear I just had work done on my brakes not that long ago. I'm a little befuddled. :irked:

We have to get our brakes fixed too. It feels like the ABS is constantly on, and is making the van shake. Talking to the two local car experts (being my dad and agreed by a good friend of mine) they think the rotors are bad. Thank goodness the semi-local expert, FH's father's best friend 45 minutes away is a mechanic :D That, and our friend lent us his car for the summer to babysit.

Well I'm about to go pick it up. Hopefully there won't be any more screeching!

So I drove her around the block a few times and the noise didn't resume, so I think all is a go. I'm just going to avoid driving so I can believe that all is ok. LOL. At least until we get back from Florida. :winktongue:

What did they say was the problem though?

What type/year of car is it Gwen? You're saying all they did was add brake fluid to it? Can you tell me what the noise sounded like?

Yes! It was like a screechy sort of high pitched noise. They put brake fluid in and had me pump the brake a few times and it stopped. It could have just been low - it had been almost 5000 miles since I last had it serviced or anything. It has like 125,000 miles on it and it's 10 years old - I guess noises and stuff were bound to happen at some point! If it makes noise when I get back from Florida then I'll take it to the dealer and have them figure it out! :) Fortunately, if there's anything wrong with it that's serious, I can just take the bus anywhere I need to go...:)

Still... Odd. I don't see why it would screech if you didn't have the brake applied unless your parking brake was stuck on or one of your calipers was stuck -oooohhhh that could have happened. Without fluid to decompress the caliper it could have got stuck in the closed position which would cause the brakes to screech.... *hmmmmmm*.
