I want to purchase a cleaning solution for my engagment ring, anyone have any suggestions of what product they use. It is a Platinum/Diamond ring.
I have heard windex works, to soak it and use a soft tooth brush. But I would also like to buy some cleaner made specifically for cleaning platinum and diamonds.
Any brand/product suggestions?
Thanks!

hi, i watched martha stewart on the wedding channel once and she said to soak it in equal parts ammonia and cold water for half an hour, and let it air dry. iv also heard you can soak the ring in warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, and scrub with a soft toothbrush too..
mine needs a good clean i think so will be interested to see what products are available and what works!! xx

u can u soap n water really... the trick is the soft toothbrush... i usually use one that i'm gonna chuck n save em for cleaning purposes,... they've been soften by then and a run thru the dishwasher will clean em up...
the key is to use warm water... i've also used toothpaste before n that works pretty well... and i soak it in the soapy water for while (maybe like 15 minutes, it's not gonna hurt your ring no matter how long u soak it!)
u said u have platinum so if u go the toothbrush route make sure it's a S-O-F-T toothbrush (like get a baby tooth brush) b/c platinum scratches easier than gold does
a lot of times if i'm in the mall, i'll stop in a major jewelery retalier (kays, zales, gordons, etc.) and ask them if they could clean it... they all offer free cleaning in their ultrasonic cleaners and will usually inspect ur ring for you too at the same time to check for loose stones... in 5 minutes u'll have a bright sparkling ring :)
which reminds me i need to take my ring in to get some of my stones tighten (grrrr) but i'll get it dipped in rhodium too so it'll look brand new again!

I've let mine soak in vingegar for about 10-15 minutes, scrub with a toothbrush and that works. I've also recently tried toothpaste with a toothbrush, and that works as well.
It still doesn't sparkle as much as when I get it cleaned at the jeweler, but its a good solution between my 6 month cleanings.

I have a plant-based jewelry cleaner, I forgot the name and don't have it here with me, and sometimes I'll pop my ring in there then scrub it with a soft toothbrush. I do that for day to day, but if there's an event or somewhere that I know a bunch of people are going to ask to see it (dinner with family who hasn't yet, the shower, the wedding) I take it to my jeweler.

oh i just remembered! u can pick up a polishing cloth real cheap too that'll help it sparkle! walmart usually carries the solutions n clothes pretty cheap
DON'T buy em from the jewelry stores, they'll charge u an arm n a leg... tho sometimes they'll give em to u for free if u bought ur ring from them

I clean mine with a solution from the jewellers. Open the lid, lift the tray, pop in the jewellery, lower tray, make cup of tea. :winktongue:
It comes with a soft brush to get between the stones. I clean all my gold in the same stuff. Although it is not recommended for Emeralds, Cameos or paste stones.

I use this liquid:

However, my jeweler told me to take the cleaner and put it in a glass bowl, then microwave it for 10-15 seconds until it boils and drop my rings in, shake them around a bit and they come out very similar to how they come out when done in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Is this product recommended for Platinum.

idk how much u know about platinum so i don't wanna go into too much detail but it's actually more durable than gold so anything taht will clean gold u can use on platinum... it's not going to oxidize like gold will... so i don't think u'll find a product that's specifically "reccomended" for platinum.. and if u do my guess would be that it's a gimmick to get u to spend more on the cleaner...

I've seen that stuff before, but I've never thought about boiling it! Brilliant! I know what I'm picking up this weekend!

I never thought about it either, but it makes sense- Ultrasonic cleaners that the jewelers use have a heating element to heat up the solution so putting a little in a container and microwaving it almost does the same thing. I don't use the brush on my rings either because I don't want to chance bending the prongs, so shaking the container simulates the same motion that the ultrasonic does. I do have an ultrasonic cleaner on my Christmas list though! :)

I found this stuff at CVS yesterday and used it last night. Did the boiling technique. Worked GREAT!
Thanks!

I soak mine in windex for 5-10 minutes, and then scrub it with a baby tooth brush. It makes it super shiny. DH can tell every time I clean it, and it's cheap, because we already need it for the house! :D

Very mild soap and water for me. And I wash it rarely - I'm afraid of damaging the emerald!

I just had a minor accident with mine. I became covered in super glue!!!!!! It spilled all over my hands. To make a long story short, the jeweler had to clean it with a solution that they used on pearls. It came out fine. I guess that they're pretty durable!!!:( Dog mom
I am such a dummy. I accidentally dropped my open deoderant and tried to catch it with both hands. I ended up scraping my ring across it and got it all gunky! :ooh: I'll probably do some warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush.

I have some spray that the jeweler gave me and use it with a toothbrush. But my jeweler is right down the street from my work, so I'll usually just run it in to get cleaned. I like the boiling idea with the cleaner. I might have to try that, too!
