This is really cute... http://blogs.msg.com/themonitor/2009/06/24/beyonce-fan-cam-how-did-you-put-a-ring-on-it/ ... They asked a bunch of couples at a Beyonce concert how they got engaged.. the stories are really sweet... So it has inspired me to create a thread where we can talk about how we got engaged.. My story isn't very out of the ordinary.. he took me to my favorite restaurant and asked me after desert.. What about you guys?

We had no formal engagement; no "real" proposal (we don't wear rings) ... we had talked about getting married off and on for years and knew that it would happen one day. Then we started talking more about it and I became a little obsessed

I stopped talking about it for a while and then some things happened and then one day DH said "so why don't we try to get married on our dating anniversary" :D I think I said something like "are you sure you really want to marry me" and of course he said yes. A few days later we were talking about it again and I think he said something like "So you're gonna be my wife" ... I guess that was my proposal ;)

We were sitting together in my parents basement deciding what we were going to do after we graduated, and how we wanted our relationship to be. We decided, together, that we wanted to get married and wanted to do it the next year. So, no proposal, my friends joke that we have the "negotiated" proposal since in that conversation we also decided grad school, what we wanted to do for living arrangements, etc. It's not remotely romantic, but it sums up who we are and how we live to a T. :)

DH proposed to me on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.

Long story short, I was being a total pain that day and not wanting to do any of the things he suggested. He (with my family) tricked me into thinking we were going to Disneyland for my nephew's birthday. They were running late so we went in without them and told them to meet us at Pirates. When we got to the front of the line, DH said he wanted to sit in the back row, but the ride operator raised his hand and asked if there were 2 riders who wanted to jump the line to get on an earlier boat. Of course I jumped at that, but DH said, "No! I want to ride in the back!"

I backed off and waited for the back of the next boat. He said, "Let's take lots of pictures. Get your camera out!" I didn't want to be one of those people who have the flash going off on the ride and ruin it for everyone so I said, "no way! I'm not ruining the ride for everyone else!"

He finally convinced me I could do it in the dark cave area where there was nothing to really see. I pulled out my camera and took a picture. Here's what I saw in the screen when I looked down at my preview:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/moonme/engaged.jpg

When I looked over at him after I saw the screen, there was a little ring waiting in his hand and he said, "Haley, will you marry me?"

I couldn't believe it was happening and I was practically shrieking, "Are you serious?!" Then I said, "of course!"

Then I had to wait the entire rest of the ride to see my new ring! haha That wasn't the end of the surprise though! We went to lunch afterwards (I was difficult about this also) and he and my family had made arrangements at Club 33.

I walked into this super exclusive restaurant to find my parents and his waiting with a champagne toast! It was incredible!

We didn't have a real proposal. We were lying in bed and the subject came up and the next day we were ring shopping.

We took a much needed vacation for one night on February 24, 2008. We went to a big resort with indoor waterpark, got upgraded to a suite, gift certifiate to dinner, just a great getaway all around.

I was getting my swimsuit on so we could go to the waterpark and he wasn't getting his on and continued to procrastinate, so finally I said, "Dan! Let's go!" He looked down beside him and I noticed a bridal magazine and a box (the magazine was because I said as soon as I got engaged, I want all the bride magazines and just start going through them!)

I opened the box and there was a ring similar to what you would get out of those $0.25 machines so I asked, "what is this?" thinking that this was a temporary ring until he got mine because I knew he ordered it but said it wouldn't be here for weeks yet. Then he pulled out the real ring and got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife!

Matt proposed to me on June 2, 2008 which was my 24th birthday. I had arrived from work shortly after 5pm and he came to the door and gave me a kiss and asked how my day was - typical getting home from work stuff.

As I was putting my purse on the table, he told me he had another birthday gift for me. I said "Matt you've already spent more on my birthday then I did on yours" as he had already given me money to buy new clothes with the day before. He was like "I know but I still got you something. Now come into the living room and I'll go get it." He positioned me in the living room and told me to shut my eyes and not to open them and he went down the hallway to get it. The next thing I hear is a box sliding across the floor coming towards me from the hallway and he kept saying things like "its so heavy." I immediately thought that he had gotten me an ottoman from Wal-mart that we want for our living room and was thinking in my head "holy **** he spent another $200 on my birthday."

Matt told me to open my eyes and when I did, he was down on one knee, holding out this beautiful ring to me in a wooden ring box. I was in absolute shock and a tear trickled down my cheek. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what he said because I was so overwhelmed and in the moment but it was something along the lines "I've enjoyed being your boyfriend for the last several years, now will you do me the honour of being my wife? Will you marry me?" And of course I said "YES!"

PS the box across the floor was a filing cabinet I had bought like a month before and have yet to take out of the box. LOL

Nothing overly romantic but sweet and us. Plus I had been sick for about 3 weeks leading up to this and diagnosed with pneumonia the day after!

we went to a bed in breakfast up north. On November 28th, 2003 He asked me to go outside and come back and knock on the door 3 times. I thought the man was insane.. so i did as I was told, I came back to a room full of purple rose petels all over and he sat me on the bed ( I love purple) he then read my the cinderella story. He knocked on the wall and asked if I heard something. He then pulled out the cinderella carriage with prince charming and cinderella in it. A note was attached, he then read the note to me and told me how much he loves me and that I will always be his cinderlla and wanted to give me the fairy tale life. He said I made his llfe complete got on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I cried said "YES" ran out the door and told everyone I saw that my boyfriend just asked me to marry him and I said yes! I was a little happy and excited, just wanted the world to know I had finally found my prince charming.

Me and Ryan had talked about getting married, but he told me I couldn't start planning the wedding until he got me a ring.

On August 8, 2008 he kept bugging me about when we were going to get married, and I kept telling him "when you get me a ring." We were eating dinner, pancakes to be exact, and he asked me again. I kinda flipped out a bit on him, telling him I would have set a date two months ago if he wouldn't have put the ring stipulation on it.

I was stuffing my face with pancakes when Ryan pulled out the ring, and I snatched it out of his hands before he had a chance to put it on. Then I ran around the house screaming "OMIGOD! WE'RE GETTING MARRIED!!"

His brother has the embarrassing video footage somewhere.

We went to "our" restaurant for our 2nd dating anniversary, and after mains, he got donw on one knee and (using my full name - ugg) asked me to marry him. He still jokes that i was too excited to say yes - i just squeaked.
As it turns out my BM was so excited she forgot to say yes for a few days.:o

Oooohhh I like this thread =)

So FH and I were engaged twice!
First time around we had been talking about it for a while and his mom worked at a bridal shop and she would always give him bride magazines to look through. So as usual, Saturday morning he came over and gave me a new magazine, so I was looking through it! I got to a certain page and there he was, a picture of him, in the book in a tux on one knee, and it said ANGELINA WILL YOU MARRY ME? and where his hand was in the picture there was a cut out of and a ring sitting in it with grass all around the ring! My silly self was like "oh look how cool this is! Look how they did this ad to the magazine! But why is there grass in it?" (Sometimes I am just SOOO ditzy lol) He was like Ang look at it and don't touch the grass!!!!! Then I realized it was my FH, that was MY ring! But what was the grass for?!?! He went to my grandfathers grave knowing how close I was with him and in his own way asked for permission to marry me. He wanted to know he had been there and had promised that he would always take care of me! (I still have the book)
We had issues and seperated a little while after the engagement! But obviously worked things out and they are better than ever!
Second time around:
It was his birthday and I went to his house to pick him up for dinner. He was running behind. I walked in and was like LETS GO, WE HAVE RESERVATIONS, WE ARE GONNA BE LATE. He kept saying just hang on hang on. I was pacing because I was taking him to our favorite restaurant and they dont tend to like when you are late, so I was rushing him. He made a comment about me not getting him anything for his birthday. I was like, what are you talking about im paying for dinner lets gooooooo! He said well I have just about everything I need anyway. There is just one more thing I want, I said great lets go, we will talk about it in the car. And as I turned around to by this time push him out of the house, he was on one knee with the ring! MY RING! (keep in mind it was the same exact style ring that I had before. I had a fit when I found out he sold the first ring. The company he originally got it from, stopped making it and only had one left in the United States! They tracked it down and got it to him, had it sized and ready to go!) I started crying and freaking out all excited! He put it on! And then I said okay LETS GO TO DINNER NOW! lol lol

Well....I got two proposals. One without a ring and one with the ring. We don't really play by the rules, so the ring proposal was actually after we were already legally married, but before our wedding. Following still? lol

The first proposal was last summer when I came to visit him in NC. As soon as he picked me up from the airport said he wanted to show me where he'd go to surf, and I was excited to go to the beach. (Side note: He had told me we needed to have a "talk" when I visited. I seriously had no clue. I was leaning more towards he was going to say he didn't want to be with me anymore because of the distance or something.) So when we got to the beach, he took my hand and started walking me along this pier, and when we got to the end, he took me up to the second story.
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq169/talymon/pier.jpg
We got up there and he started twisting the black onyx band that I wore on my left ring finger around. And then he told me I couldn't wear it on that finger anymore. I asked him why and he whispered "I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?" I was so shocked that I managed a "K" answer.

The second one was after our JOP service, and the one where he really did put a ring on it. :winktongue: We were waiting at a really nice sushi restaurant for his mom and little sister to get there. He asked if I wanted to play a game while we waited. He took the ring I had on my finger off, got down on one knee and proposed again, this time with the ring! I cried a little bit, and my answer was "I already did" through tears and laughter. Hahaha.

I was away at college when we got engaged and FH came down for the weekends. That Sunday was his birthday, so he told me he took off Monday from work just so we could have a long birthday weekend. So, the weekend went pretty regular, and Feb 10 2008 was his 25th birthday. We went out for lunch and did gifts and cake at my apartment in the evening, but then at 8:00 I had to go to a meeting for work. He dropped me off and I said I'd call when I was done so he could pick me up. It was *freezing* by the way! Went to the meeting, got done about when I had told him to expect me, and called. He didn't show up for another twenty mins and when he did, he was WALKING!

We started walking home and he said we should take a detour... we went to the coffee shop we went to on our first date, stopped at the "eternal flame" on the quad which is this light where if a couple kisses under it while it's lit, they'll be together forever, and then went to a rooftop on campus where we'd also gone on our first date, and had our first kiss. He said a prayer about us and our future, then said some stuff to me and I don't remember what because I was crying by then, then asked me to marry him!

Since it was so cold we made a beeline for my apartment, and when we got there I learned that he had proposed with a fake ring because he was afraid we'd lose the real one up on the roof.. so in my room were three dozen roses, champagne, and my real ring in it's perfect wooden box.

I travel for work - and by travel I mean I'm gone for weeks or months at a time. I was actually working in the South, in Mississippi, which is the closest I've worked to home yet (I live in Georgia). I had actually driven to Miss. from the Atlanta airport. I had the weekend off starting that Thursday and had to be BACK in Mississippi Sunday evening - I decided to go ahead and drive home since I was about to go on a SIX WEEK (SIX WEEKS!!!) deployment :( My FH and I live together, and have since I graduated college.

Anyway, he sent me a text saying "Don't make any plans for this weekend. Got something planned since you will be gone so long."

I was all giddy and excited, because he works about 80 hours a week during the summer so I never ask for a date when I come home in the summer time, I don't want to tire him out. :whyme:

ANYWAY - So I had no idea where we were going, what we were doing, etc. I asked him how I need to dress and he said "Well, we're going to be outside, but you'll want to look nice." So I wore a cute little jersey-knit skirt and an cute but comfy top.

First stop? The shooting range. He had gotten up at the crack of dawn to skillfully hide the shotguns in the car. I shot a 100 shot round of skeet in a skirt. I loved it, don't get me wrong. Competition skeet shooting is one of my favorite things to do - but I just felt like people thought I was a complete idiot. (I shot well though ;D )

Afterwards, we jump back in the car, still have no idea where we were going. We ended up going to a place in Georgia called Callaway Gardens (Gorgeous, they have a website) A neighborhood/botanical gardens/butterfly exhibit/golf course etc. We went to the gardens. They had a vegetable garden which also has several varieties of flowers in it. We walked around a while.. then went to a gazebo that overlooked pretty much the whole seven acres. We sat on a bench in the gazebo, and he handed me a pamphlett.

I was flipping through the pamphlett when he said "Why don't you look and see what kind of special events they have? We might have to come back when you get back home.." So, I flipped to the special events page.

It looked just like every page. There was a picture with a poem by it... then I looked at the bottom of the page and it said "So put your book down, and look around. Take my hand in yours. I love you - Brian." .. I FREAKED! He had gone there the week before when I was in Mississippi, gotten a pamphlet, scanned the page and filled in around the pictures that were already there a love not/proposal note to me, then pasted it back into the pamphlet. I balled like an absolute baby.

Then, he gave me the ring... And put it on the wrong hand to begin with! Haha.. The ring is his Great-grandmothers three-stone engagement ring.

Boo for not being able to edit a post :(
I know how to spell pamphlet I promise.. and that should say "...there WAS a love NOTE..." My coffee has obviously not kicked in yet.
And uploading these pics is taken forever - I cant access facebook/myspace from work to just link them from there :o
Pictures anyone?
This first pic is the view from where he asked - You can see the varieties of flower that leads up to the gazebo, at the very end in the middle are actually test varieties, submitted from all over the country. The winners of the tests go on to be sold at places like Lowe's and Home Depot the following year. Spread out to the sides and further back are vegetables, fruit trees, vines (muscadine, etc), and an herb garden

And the one below I got as evidence of how nervous he was - sweat spot on the bench where he was sitting

Oh these are cute :yesnod:
Here is my story:
We had the day off together and we were talking for a week about hanging out and going shopping or something. So I got home from class and he was ready to go out. For some reason the cats were shut into one of our spare rooms and I asked why and he said they were getting tangled up in the computer cords so he had to put them in there and would let them out when we got home..(It is weird but I believed it!) So we went to eat lunch and he suggested we go to a big garden in town. I said no because it was too hot. haha! Well we went to a used clothes store instead and he was just trying to kill time because his parents were at home setting up. Well I decided to shop shop shop and then try things on! Haha! Well I eventually finished up and we got back to our apartment and there was music playing and all the lights were off. I looked down and there was rose pedals on the floor leading to a table set up in the living room. It had wine, candles (the reason the cats were in their room), roses, and chocolate covered strawberries on it. On the front of the table facing the door was the box with the ring in it. It was super sweet and totally unexpected. :hearts:

Oh and if I knew how to post a picture, I would :)

Kane surprised me with a cute proposal on the sand dunes after a long day of cleaning the house for the Thanksgiving holiday. First thing that morning, there was a knock at the door, and I thought it was strange, but Kane, who could sleep through earthquakes and alien invasions, BOLTED out of bed. "Is it your Dad?" I asked Kane.

"No," he replied. "It was the mailman. I got some DVD's from Amazon.com that I needed to sign for."

In retrospect, I can't believe I fell for that one.

All day, Kane was saying that the weather was too nice not to go outside once we were finished tidying up. As soon as the condo was acceptable and we ate a late lunch, Kane asked me if I still wanted to go out to the beach to unwind.

"The local one or someplace else?" I asked.

He insisted on the local one, but we stopped at the sand dunes across the street from our condo instead. We then walked in circles for a long time while Kane searched for the best spot to sit in. Kane is usually not that picky about where to sit, but again, I didn't notice.

While we were on the sandy cliffs overlooking the ocean while the sun was low in the sky, Kane hugged me from behind and told me how much he loved me, and he apologized that the last couple of years "weren't exactly fun and stress-free." He was referring to our condo literally rotting away from the inside and needing the outer walls to be replaced. Oh, the joys of coastal living!

I told him that it was alright, and that I thought it was just life. Life is stressful!

"But it was easier with you there. You were the highlight of those years!" He said. And then, out of nowhere, he pulled the ring out of his pocket and proposed!

That is such a sweet unique way of proposing!! I love it!!

I've been so excited to get engaged and I always thought it would be somewhere so romantic. I always imagined it on the beach together but we aren't near any beaches. (I was born in San Diego, but we rarely go to the beach there because we're so busy.) So when we went to Disneyland back in 2007 and I thought he was going to propose to me then. I was so thrilled and told my Mom and my BFF. And sadly it didn't happen and kind of put a damper on my vacation.

For my next birthday we were going to go to Hawaii and I thought maybe he'd propose to me then, but I seriously didn't want to get my hopes up. My Mom and BFF told me to just think it wouldn't happen, I mean I didn't want this to damper my trip. So here I was packing for my vacation and I just really wanted to know if he would propose so like an anxious little wanna know everything freak I just asked. He laughed at me and said no. I said, "Are you suuuure??" (LOL) and he said to reassure me I can even check his luggage!! And I did!! Nothing was there!! I even checked when we arrived in Hawaii and nope, no box ANYWHERE!! (and trust me, I looked in all the zippered areas and hidden compartments!) On my birthday vacation we were visiting family and just enjoy the island together. (He's been there previously and so have I but it was out first time together. Anyways, because I have family there and he has friends there we were always surrounded by people no time by ourselves. So I already knew he didn't have the ring, and we were meeting his friend in a few hours so we just chilled together on the beach to kill time.

He was acting all weird, I figured he just really wanted to go into the water, but I didn't want to at the time. Then he kept wanting to go into parts of the water that a lot of people weren't in, but I kept saying how I didn't want to leave our valuables alone away from my view. He saw some guy with these weird gadgets and metal detectors and he was really wanting to go and see what this guy was doing. I didn't want to, just let the guy do what he's doing man!! So he dropped the guy but then he kept wanting to go "over there, there's less people. Let's play in the water there." So finally I said okay and we just walked in the water a bit and I didn't want go to in any further. We were walking further and further away from our valuables and I didn't want to get out of sight of our stuff. So I walked out and took a few steps towards our stuff and he just told me to sit here and soak up the scenery with him. So then we sat in the sand and I felt the urge to ouch his pocket. (I have nooo idea why!!) and I felt something. I asked him what it was and he immediately said, "Quarters." And well it WAS quarters!! We had to get change for the meter on the street, haha!! So anyways, as I'm playing in the sand with my finger, I thought he was drawing something in the sand on the right side of him when all the sudden he just turns to me and has a ring in his hands and pops the question! Of course I said yes!!

He said he was planning on playing in the water with me and saying, "Oh look at this shell I found.." Then turn to show me the ring. But he just got too nervous and didn't connect that he could do it later. Then his nerves really got to him and he switched to plan B. Haha. But it was perfect anyways, and I was glowing!!

I called my Mom right away and she screamed on the phone (she was at work). And I called my BFF shared the good news. We walked back to our belongings and I was just glowing the whole day and of course the whole trip. When we got back home to my Auntie's house at about midnight we sat in the room talking to her and I told her the good news and she jumped outta bed to turn on a brighter light to stare at my new ring. To top it off at the Luau we went to they even made an announcement of the newly engaged couple and had a dance for us in front of thousands of people.

When we got home we changed the ring because he gave me a "safe" ring, something he could just propose with so he could have a ring to give me. It took months and months but finally I was able to find the perfect ring made for me!! It's a beauty!!

Thank you all for letting me share my story!!
