Well this didn't turn out to be as bad as it could have been since I was home and found the problem. No telling how bad it would have gotten if I had not been home all day.
The other day (yeah, like 1 or 2 days ago DH says) DH was doing some work out in the back yard and had the garden hose out. He left it out and apparently left the spicket on too. We have one of those pressure nozzles on it and I guess he just forgot to turn off the water.
Well apparently 1 or 2 days of pressure built up and the hose busted. It must have been pouring water for 2-3 hours before I noticed it.
I heard a strange noise in the house and after some investigating I discovered it was coming from some pipes in the basement. So I freaked and called DH at work. He said it was probably a drain pipe and there had to be water running somewhere. So I knew there was nothing running in the house, so I went outside in the back yard to check. I heard it as soon as I went out the door; then I saw it :bbeek:
It has dried up some now (been pretty hot here lately), but it looked pretty flooded when I found it. Lucky it was just one little area by the carport; as long as it stays hot for a couple more days it should be fine.
Of course now we need a new garden hose ;)
I wonder how this will affect our water bill next month :ooh:

Yikes! Hopefully there wasn't any permanent damage!

I doubt there is any real damage to the yard. I just wonder about the water bill; but either way it will be fine.
I am sure DH is going to be more careful from now on ;)

Yikes! Good thing it happened outside and NOT inside. Yes, DH should be more careful next time. Silly men :chimp:

Uggh...I know all about a flooded yard only mine happened with the pipe connecting my water from the street to the house burst at the joint. The house was vacant and I got a frantic call from my next door neighbor (Thankfully she is very nosey, but in a good way!) telling me that water was pouring out from under my house. By the time I left work and got their, another neighbor had turned off the water and the city utilities man was there, but I got to pay big bucks for all the water than poured into the street that day. My bill was about $150 instead of the normal $60 that month.
Hope you fare better than I did! On the bright side, your grass will be happy!

Yikes that pipe bursting thing sounds bad; good thing your neighbors let you know and got the water turned off. What did it take to fix the pipe?
I was afraid that it was a pipe about to bust when I heard the noise. Lucky is it was just the hose outside. As for my lawn being happy; there is no grass in the area were the water was, just rock and dirt.

It took 3 days for me to get an appointment with the plumber (through the home warranty - sure glad I wasn't living there at the time because being without water for 3 days would not have been an option!) When the plumber got there, he dug a 2 foot hole in the yard and found that the connector that attaches the metal pipe from the street to the pvc pipe on the house was split, so he changed out the connector with one that is more heavy duty.
I actually got lucky - while the warranty didn't cover the repair because it was in the yard and not in the house, it could have been worse if the broken pipe was in the house slab. I think the total bill before the water cost was under $200.00 - had it been in the slab it would have been closer to $2000.00!
Hmmm...sounds like maybe you should go get some grass seed and scatter it quick! :o

Wow, glad it wasn't in the house then!
Yipes! That happened at our neighbors house once and it flooded OUR yard. Our water is a flat rate - thank goodness - but the repair alone is a PITA. Glad you caught it early!

Oh man that would suck! Glad it wasn't worse for us or the neighbors!
