View Full Version : Slip or Shapewear?

Bridetobe2009 reminded me (thank you!) of my own fashion dilemma:

Should I get a slip, or shapewear to wear under my dress? I need something because the dress is a bit, ahem, translucent.

Here is my dress:

Here is me in it. I'm not wearing a bra, I just woke up, I hadn't washed my hair yet, and I hate having my picture taken, hence the awfulness of the pictures. That, and I forgot to tie it I see now....:

It used to be white, it's aged to a cream color. Which, frankly I prefer (go figure).

I'm a n00b when it comes to underdress lingerie because I don't wear dresses that require it. Half the time I don't wear a bra. What I was looking for is a slip that has a bra built into it. Turns out, most don't, but "shapewear" does.

I'm 5'2ish, I have no idea how much I weigh, but wear between a six and an eight in dresses, 34C. I'm not super thin, but I'm not heavy either and it is a bit enticing to wear the shapewear to thin out a bit (I always slim down a bit in the summer by virtue of all the biking/walking I do). I'm a bit afraid a slip would puff it out... but at the same time the wedding is in August and I don't want heat exhaustion ;) and I don't know how that stuff feels.

Do you have any advice? I would appreciate it! :flower:

hmm well it's gonna be a personal preference... personally i use shapewear alot and i'm a average almost thin girl (most ppl say i'm a skinny minny but i don't see it personally).... for me i like it b/c it smooths everything out n holds things in place... it's made in a range too so you can get a very light piece w/o almost no "tightness" that's little more than a slip... to a corset where u can't breath LOL

if i were you i'd take a trip down to the galleria n go to jcpenny's, they keep a good stock of shapewear and slips n you can try some of them on to see how you feel in them... u could even bring your dress n see how the final product looks but if your main concern is comfort u don't necessarly need to... just try it on... make sure to try sitting down too!

if you want boob support go w/shapewear... u can get something that's not very tight... but that'll add a nice smooth look :)
ugh this is reminding me now of my quest for bridal underwears LOL

LOL it's funny you should mention the JCPenney in Galleria because that's where I fell into the connundrum. The woman there said they didn't carry any at the moment. I'll call and see if they brought some in.

Thanks! :)

weird! i guess it's been awhile since i've gone shopping for that stuff b/c i've got a good supply... i wonder if its all JCP's or just the galleria... maybe give eastern hills a ring... i love that mall b/c unless it's some ridiculous sale they always have SOOOO much in stock b/c very few ppl go there LOL (which also makes it nicer to shop in IMHO)

i know when i went there and asked for "bridal" underwear they said they'd have to order it in... which annoy'd me LOL why wouldn't u keep that stuff in the store... especially during wedding season...

You might actually want to go with both- if you decide to go with shapewear that is similar to a 1 piece bathing suit, maybe choose a cotton half slip to wear over it so that if you are in front of a light source when your pictures are taken, you don't end up with peek-a-boo photos.

If you decide to go with shapewear that is more dress like, you might not need it, but I have heard that these types like to ride up and that would drive me crazy!

Just be warned.. I believe shapeware is the devil. o.o; That stuff hurts to get on and off, cuz they are trying to suck you in.. I dunno if its different because you are already skinny. Personally, i think a long bra would be good enough..

I appreciate this word of warning - I don't want to be in pain getting dressed! :)

Do they make long bras that would act as skirts? The ones I had seen only went to the waist.

Hm.. I don't think so. But you could always get a skirt slip as well..

Well, I think you might be best with something like http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50475&CatID=51887&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=13e47f4&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=50475%7c51209&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=1&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50475|51209|51887&mscssid=69038080ca2ce4e03969dca0967a511e6xMnVNoVza 1WxMnVNoVza1o200B2623D83F23E4385E69B85D64162A503C0 916700
if you're looking to smooth out, but if you're just concerned with people seeing through it, maybe a simple slip like http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50475&CatID=51203&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=14f0827&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=50475&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=12&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50475|51203&mscssid=69038080ca2ce4e03969dca0967a511e6xMnVNoVza 1WxMnVNoVza1o200B2623D83F23E4385E69B85D64162A503C0 916700
would be the way to go.

I would go with shapewear, a slip might show crinkles under the dress!

I went and tried on both... and I decided to go with a slip, and found a comfortable, non-underwire bra to go with it. I was afraid it would feel like I was wearing a ton of underwear, but it doesn't. You can see a few crinkles, but I'm OK with that. Comfort and the desire not to pass out in the August heat ended up making the decision, that and the woman there (who was really nice, btw, I went to the Eastern Hills Mall JCPenney) told me that "you're too tiny to make a real difference" (Not true, but awwwww) and that the heat would be pretty bad. And then she sent me to Macy's, saying it was better  The slip is the perfect length for what I need, and it fits pretty well under the dress. You can see a little tiny bit of it's lace under the dress's lace, but thats OK, nothing is perfect, and it's camouflaged enough that I think I'm the only one who will notice.
