Today I went to Stop & Shop to buy a few items. I decided to use self checkout. One of the disadvantages of self checkout is you have to bag your own groceries. Anyway, today I decided I wanted a paper bag but there were none to be found. So I asked a bagger, who was just standing there in a regular checkout lane with no customers, to help me. He appologized for there not being any paper bags there in addition to the plastic bags. He said something about it not being his job to keep them stocked. I think that's :censored:!!! When I was a teenager I worked as a bagger in a supermarket and I had 3 jobs which were 1) check with the cashier to see whether the customer wanted paper or plastic 2) bag the groceries in the desired bag type and 3) make sure there were enough bags there at all times of each type!

You should have told him that you were the customer and you shouldn't be bagging your own groceries anyways! (I hate self check outs)

I'm the minority I think - I LOVE self checkout! :) I love to bag my own groceries, so that like things go together. Every time I go to the grocery store and somebody else bags my groceries I have to rebag them when I get out to the car - this saves me the step! :)

Wasn't there someone working at the uscan? I would have asked her/him.. Thats actually their job.. Not your fault though! :)
On another note.. I HATTTTEEEEE working uscan. You get a few nice people, and a bunch of dummies who seem to lose their heads when they actually have to do something themselves....

Baggers? WTF are those? lol.

We don't have such luxuries in the UK. You get Your Shopping. You go through a till with a woman doing the "Beep Beep" bit and bag it all Yourself.
The only time i go through self checkout is when i get the munchies at stupid o'clock. That's the only time there's no one on the checkouts.

My Supermarket is stopping the supply of Plastic Bags to save the environment. The UK don't have those big brown bags for Grocies that i've only seen in the Movies. (Have You ever noticed that in Movies, every bag must have at least one French Bread sticking out the top  ).

We have to take our own bags. So i bought some super strong Hessian bags for the job. Plus they are great for taking eBay parcels to the Post Office. :)

And even if the UK did have Baggers. I'm with Gwen on this one.
The thought of someone putting tins on top of My bread is enough for Me to flip out and slap them into submission LOL.

lol i LOVE when i get my groceries bagged... b/c they do a much better job then me... sometimes i can be a dummy n put something heavy on my bread n then i have no one to be made at but myself LOL

i also bring the reuseable bags b/c those plastic bags are SO bad for the environment and are SO difficult to recycle. i admit that sometimes i don't have them when i run in for little things unexpectedly but the bags i get then will become trash liners for the bathroom garbage bins ;) reduce, reuse, recycle!

alot of g-stores in our area also offer incentives for using those bags to make up for the initial cost in buying them (hannafords gives u 5 cents back each time u use them n they cost .99 cents so in theory eventually u'll make money for using them LOL)

Sorry that happened to you! How fustrating! I like the self checkouts for the same reasons others have said, I can pack my groceries that are simular together which makes putting them away when we get home a lot easier and faster. However, the scanner on your self checkouts at our gs don't seem to work very well!

We use the reusable bags too! The ones from Wegmans (it's a store based in the next city over) are so much easier to carry in than the plastic ones IMHO because they have long handles that make it possible for short people like me to put it over their shoulder. We started leaving the bags in the car, as we are just as guilty of forgetting them on occasions!

But since we used them at the thrift store to pack our wedding stuff in, we inadvertantly left about six Tops bags and a Wegmans bag (FH likes to keep them consistent to the store brand, I told him that I don't care) at my parent's, so we are down to two and so we bought an insulated one from Tops.

I worked at Wegmans for six years, and now I'd rather do my own bagging because I swear I do a better job than the average 16 year old they have working there.... and it gets me mad because I trained cashiers, so when they do a bad job, I know that they should know better.

Reusable bags are awesome! They hold so much more stuff and they're so much easier to carry. Those plastic bags used to strangle my hands! haha

I'm with Gwen on this one - I had a kid throw the laundry detergent on the tomatoes with the bread all in one bag. WTF... Uhhhh hellOOOO!

girlggc I'm sorry that happened to you - I would have been ticked. Did you ask "Then who's job is it?" (I would have LOL). :D

Aww, how lame! I agree with Justina, I would have asked whose job it was, or at least pointed out that it's obviously not MY job, so can he find someone to help?

I like self check-out too, although it's frustrating when the machine craps up or you need an employee to approve something. But I like to bag my own stuff... one too many times have I had, for example, dog food or toilet bowl cleaner packaged with my fresh fruit, etc.

(Haha, there is this bagger at Jewel that my mom HATES. He's always trying to be funny, but he just isn't, and a month or two ago I was there with her and he asked if she was my grandmother. The cashier said he'd been asking women that all day--women who clearly aren't grandmothers. Anyway my mom can't stand when she gets stuck with him and she goes on the funniest rants about it, that aren't really OW appropriate!)

I usually unload my cart so things are on the conveyor belt in groups (frozen, boxed stuff, fruit, and at the end are the fragile bread/eggs). That way the bagger can usually group everything together how it's supposed to be! I HATE the self checkouts and try to avoid them at all costs. They seem to take too long for me. Plus, if I'm paying for this stuff the least they can do is bag it for me!

No bags of the right kind is really a pain . . . when that happens to me, I just go and get them from another lane myself!

Here in central MN (with only a very few exceptions) we always bag our own groceries. We don't have stores with baggers. Doesn't matter if you check out with a cashier or do it yourself (personally I like the DIY checkout lanes, they're always faster!), you have to bag -- and haul -- your own groceries.

There are two very upscale chains which have baggers, but of course you pay an arm and a leg to shop there. We common peasants go to the grocery stores where we can actually afford to shop, and bag ourselves.

Reading this thread, I think I'm glad we bag our own!

I do REALLY hate the big self check out lanes at places like meijer, though. Talk about taking away peoples jobs...

BTW: I <3 when people divide their groceries! It makes life sooo much easier! haha. Though its annoying when they don't pay attention that things narrow down by my end.. So i get blamed when they smash their own bread. :snide:
