That's funny. I thought Texas's moto was still Don't Mess With Texas. I have heard It's A whole Other Country, but just on the travel channel or in travel magazines.

West Virginia's new one, sucks. They heave "Open for Business" because of all the slot gambeling in the state now. It is bringing in tons of revenue to Charleston but totally turning the entire state into a :censored: hole like Atlantic City. The old motto was "Wild, Wonderful, West Virginia". It fit for a state whose main revenue was tourism for hiking and camping. But the last governor in office decided to take the "wild" out because he felt that it gave the state a negative imagine.

I live in PA now. Their state motto should be Land of a million and one orange construction barrels.

Georgia
Empire State of the South
The Peach State
The Goober State
The Cracker State
The Buzzard State
Yankee-land of the South
I've only heard The Peach State one, there is a peach on the license plate.

I had no idea that there were alot of buzzards in GA. And I sort of knew peanuts ("Goobers" are peanuts) were popular in the south (mostly due to the ppl selling boiled peanuts on the side of the road like everywhere) but I didn't realize they had such importance, or did at one time.

Thanks for the info Karen :)

I've been in Texas all my life and I've never heard it called the beef state or the banner state. I know that we are the number one beef producers, but I've only heard the lone star state. Just an fyi, Texas gets it's name from Tejas, which means friends.

I hear ya, Kacie, I'm still scratching my head over the Arizona nicknames.

Arizona (http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/az_intro.htm)
The Grand Canyon State - this one is clear
The Copper State - as is this one
The Apache State - I get the whole Indian thing
The Aztec State - Ditto on this one
The Baby State - What? What the hell does this mean?
The Valentine State - Huh?
Italy of America - Excuse me? Don't get it.
The Sand Hill State - Maybe there's some sand somewhere, don't know where though
The Sunset State - Don't all states have sunsets?

Kacie_bride

All states have sunsets, but I think Arizona is known for exceptionally beautiful ones. The Italy of America? Do you guys have a lot of Italians or something? I've never heard that one. I have heard the Grand Canyon State and that's really the only one I've heard.

I have lived here since I was a kindergartner, and I have never seen, or heard that we had, a lot of Italians. We have many, many Hispanic people, but I don't know where the Italian thing comes in. Very strange indeed.

We have a lot of Hispanic people too. When I was reading a lot of these I was like "what?" For instance, one of Georgia's, Yankee-Land of the South? I nearly died when I heard that. Do you think that most people from Georgia would like to have their state called Yankee Land? Not any of the people from Georgia I've ever been around would like that.

We'll have to ask Brandi what she thinks of that nickname. Maybe she knows something we don't. :)

Yankee-land of the South: "Yankee-land of the South" speaks to industrial and economic development in the south. This nickname may be used in a derogatory sense.

I really don't quite understand this ... I don't consider myself a 'Yankee'

I've always heard 'Yankee' to mean someone from the Northern US. So maybe this is suppose to mean that lots of ppl from the north moved out here? Some foreigners call anyone from the US a Yankee.
