View Full Version : Going for Sleep Study tonight

So I'm going to a sleep center tonight to have a sleep study done. I'm a little nervous as I don't do particularly well in any sort of medical environment. I just went to the ENT specialist on Thursday and she recommended the sleep study. I called this morning to make an appointment and they happened to have an opening for this evening. I figured why wait? Just get it over with. The closer I get to the wedding the more hectic life will be. Plus with FH running a fever last night, maybe I can escape catching whatever he has!

So now I have to race home after work, pack and come back into the city for the sleep study and go right to work tomorrow from there. Has anyone ever had a sleep study done? I'm a toss/turner and I'm wondering how all those wires are going to stay attached? And am I really going to be able to sleep with all that stuff attached to me?

What issue do you have that they want to study?

Hope it goes well for you!

I am not sure I could sleep in a strange environment like that, plus having cameras and/or stuff attached to me.

That would be so hard to sleep in front of people where they are watching you and monitoring everything. I'd probably have to deprive myself of sleep the night before so I could sleep at the study.

Hope you are able to get to sleep and that they can figure out whatever it is you are wanting answers for!

Last week I went to the Ear/Nose/Throat specialist. They are checking for sleep apnea or anything else that might be causing an increased need for sleep. The doctor also suggested I get allergy testing done. I have to be at the place at 6:30pm. I guess they have showers which is good because I'm going to have to go straight to work tomorrow morning.

It's sort of interesting. But also really weird.

Hope they can figure it out for you.

I seem to always be tired, even if I get 8 hours sleep. I always figure it is allergy related.

I have sleep apnea. I remember at my sleep study they hooked the stuff up to me, and then left me alone to sleep. There was also an intercom there in case I had to go to the bathroom, in which case the tech had to come back in the room and disconnect some wires. Then halfway through the sleep study, when they decided I did, in fact, have sleep apnea, the tech came in and put the CPAP machine on me. A week later, the doctor arranged for me to have my own CPAP machine. It's awkward sleeping with it at first, but I got used to it.

Wow! I have a fantastic picture from last night. Me with my hair a mess, no makeup (a rare thing for me) with 28 wires stuck to me. I'll have to post it later when I get home from work.

I raced home after work and ran 30 minutes, ran through the shower, threw stuff in a bag and shoveled a light dinner down and raced back to the sleep center for 6:30. It was me and 4 old men. Ok, they weren't ancient, but I definitely the youngest at 36. When they were hooking me up to the equipment, the technician said when they saw me walk in, they wondered what I was doing there as I don't really fit the standard profile of who they normally see. I went to bed around 10:15 and it was weird. I'm normally a side sleeper but with all that stuff hooked to me and the tubes at my nose I decided to try sleeping on my back. I'm really wondering how accurate this can be?...I don't feel like it was a normal night's sleep for me. Anyhow, I made it through the night and they woke me around 6:15. I feel horrible right now and I'm pretty sure I have a fever. Ick, hope I'm not getting sick now.

I guess I won't get the results for about 4 weeks. You know, right before I get married. :)

Sorry you feel bad after going through all of that; hope you feel better and hope you get some answers soon. Try not to worry too much about it though :)

I've always wondered about that - how accurate those tests can be. I mean, I sleep differently depending where I am and also if there's a lot of stress. Also, I typically fall asleep faster and easier if there is a tv on to distract me - that way I'm not thinking about anything really.

So if I went to a sleep center - strange bed, no tv, and people monitoring my sleep - I think that would just make me crazy and I'd never end up falling asleep! hahaha. Hope your results turn out ok. Can't wait to see your picture from this adventure! :)

You won't officially get the results for 4 weeks, but I bet you don't have sleep apnea. Like I previously said, I have sleep apnea and if, at the sleep study, you do, in fact, have sleep apnea, the tech hooks you up to the CPAP machine as soon as he/she figures it out.

Gwen, the sleep center I went to had TVs in the bedrooms. Plus the techs monitor your sleep from a different room.

No TV in my room. They had a lounge with a tiny TV and very comfortable furniture - probably to make you REALLY comfortable. I'm not sure if they would have woke me. There were 2 people there that had been there previously and I know 1 of them was getting the mask thing you mentioned.

You're right GIRLGGC, I won't get the results until my follow up which is at least 4 weeks away. You know, right around the time I'll be in panic mode trying to get everything done for the wedding. So, I guess I'll just wait to see. Forgot to post the pictures last night - I was exhausted and went to bed early :snide:

My sister went to a sleep clinic. All of us in our family have a heck of a time sleeping normally.

Her test results came back with the following: Upon conclusion of sleep study, it is inconclusive whether patient suffers from sleep apnea, as subject did not go to sleep.

My mom had this done about a year ago, and the test was inconclusive because she was so uncomfortable, they said she only really got about 1/2 hour of straight sleep.....therefore they couldn't tell what they were looking for.
They asked her to do another, and she refused.

She has Restless Leg Syndrome, and they think she has Apnea too, but she said she's not doing it again.
good luck with your results

OMG, I just read the post above, lol
and that is exactly what my moms was.............
