I was drying my hair and FH noticed a big bald spot on the back of my head!!! He thinks it's alopecia areata. FH says I should go see a dermatologist for a steroid shot or a topical cream and the hair will grow back in a few months. I'm totally freaking out right now.

oh my! this happened to my FH and indeed the bald spot went away in a few months... he used rogaine just in case... but personally i don't think it was the rogaine that made it "grow" back...

Yikes, I'm sorry! I know how you feel because I've noticed my hair seems to be falling out too. I don't have a bald spot but when I pull my hair back I can see a lot of my scalp between the hair. It has made me almost cry, so I can understand how upset you must be.

You should definitely go see a doctor. Let us know how it turns out. Good luck!

it could be stress too or, are you taking any new meds?

Do you normally have thin hair? My sister has thin hair use to think she was loosing hair, but wasn't.

When I had a staph infection a while back I broke out in these little bumps; I had gotten one on my scalp and had a bald spot there. Even today (years later) my hair is thinner in that spot.

If you think it is a problem I would go to the Dr. If nothing else you could get extentions and such to make your hair look fuller for the wedding if you want :)

I have a full head of really long, thick hair. I always have a lot of hair that falls out regularly since it's so heavy and I have so darn much of it, but the quarter-sized bald spot is new. I read up on alopecia areata after FH mentioned it and it actually looks like that's what it is. Luckily, the spot is in the back and covered, so I'm not too worried about how it'll affect me on our wedding day.

The shock wore off a bit and I think I'm more upset about the fact that I let wedding planning stress me out to the point that my body would attack itself in such a way.

FH says the hair will grow back in time, but I think I'll go see a dermatologist anyway to help boost hair regrowth and prevent further baldness. According to Wiki, the "condition affects 0.1%–0.2% of humans", and I know it's a really twisted way of looking at it, but I feel kind of special! :snide:

Well if that is what it is, hopefully you can get it under control.

I too am going through this! I went to a derm. doctor and they said my iron was low. So, I am on iron pills which will hopefully make it come back in, they said it is a SLOOOOOW process. I have noticed that it isn't coming out so much int he shower now. I am so embaressed with it, I am doing everything I can to cover it!

I just got back from the dermatologists' office. I went to see someone who specializes in female hair. She says I have active (and probably chronic) alopecia areata. She was a bit surprised that this was the first time I ever noticed a blatant bald spot, but said it's very possible I just had general hair loss throughout the scalp previously. She's convinced this episode was triggered by wedding planning stress. She gave me 5-6 shots in the bald spot since the alopecia is still active and the new growth is easily pulled. I'm in pain right now. I'm supposed to go back after the wedding and honeymoon to see if the shots have helped to prevent further hairloss and spur new growth.

On a brighter note, the doc said I will never be one of those old ladies that loses ALL of her hair because I am prone to spot baldness. Lol... :)

That is so crazy! Well at least you know now and you're on the right track to getting it better.

I need to go to the dermatolgist for my hair loss issues too!
