View Full Version : Pop-up ads; is it only me?

Does anyone else see an occasional, semi-transparent ad (in my case it's for home hardware & thinsations cookies), pop up and cover the middle of their screen? It started (for me at least) yesterday. :irked:

hmm I hasn't done that for me. Is like an extension of the ad at the top of the screen? I know sometimes on the weather channels website it does that you have to close it out. Strange.... maybe you need some new home hardware?

for me, it's always wedding stuff...then i figured out why though
fh has IE set to open new pages "related" to the siteyou're visiting, kind of like "suggestive selling"...argh, i fixed it though....but for me, it was happening EVERYWHERE

Yeah it's related to the top banner ad and obviously directed at Canadian visitors (Home Hardware is one of our chain stores). The ad in the middle of the screen will disappear after about 10 seconds.
I have gone to click on something within a thread but in the meantime the ad will pop up and I will be redirected there. My computer is set up so as no to allow pop ups but these ads seem to be getting around that :irked:
I just wondered if any US ads were doing the same.
Nope, it hasn't happened to me. That is so annoying though, :snide:.

On this board only. As mentioned, they are related to the same google banner ad that I see on the top.

both are definitely Canadian sites
ETA I just right clicked on one - and it's a flash ad. Don't know if that helps any.

I'm getting them Elizabeth. Started yesterday. Not nessasarly a pop up. But the ad at the top of the page enxtends on it's own. I think the ads are related to what you look at online. Mine has been for Target and the poconos. So those are US sites.

Sneaky little devils :)
Thanks Brandi!
(If I knew how to take a screen shot on a mac I would have )
Nikki - I think we were seeing different things .... these are/were transparent-ish popups that would appear right in the middle of the screen, over the OW board a few seconds after landing on the page. A corresponding ad was also up in the google ad banner area, up the top of the board ^^^^^^^^ The pop up would stay there for a bit and could be x'd out if I did that before it disappeared. It was annoying to either have to x it out or wait until it disappeared.

I’m getting the same thing as Elizabeth. It happened a few times yesterday, and this is my first time on today, and so far nothing. It’s for the same things too, Home Hardware and Thinsations. Only on this site.
ETA: Oops! I should have read the whole thread first. I WAS getting it too. Thanks Brandi!!

I just had something...interesting happen. I stupidly wanted to see if it'd do it to me, so I put the arrow at the ad banner. I got the popup and then I got a notification that there was an error, and Onewed completely closed. So no more scrolling over ads for me.

Another one .... sort of ..... the banner appears in the google ad area up top. There is a "rollover to expand" button but if your cursor is positioned anywhere near the top of the page, it opens. It doesn't seem to want to close right away either :snide:

We have removed all ads from the ad network that were causing the pop-up ads. We had been promised that they would not deliver pop-up ads to our site, but obviously their quality control was not up to par. I was willing to work with them for a little while, but enough is enough - they are GONE!
Sorry that you all had to deal with the intrusiveness of those for a while.
