He said he didn't want a gas mower because of the smell, noise and mess.

I didn't think an electric mower would be practical only because of location of our outdoor electrical outlets and because I don't believe rechargeable anythings are good for any length of time.

If I am ever going to mow the lawn, I want it to be as quick and as painless as possible but ..... DH really, really, REALLY wanted a reel mower. I showed him some cheap and cheerful models but he worried that they wouldn't last or wouldn't do the job well.

So .... I hope he's going to be happy pushing this thing (for the next 20 years or so), because I just bought him the fanciest model, from Canada's whoop-d-do tool place (and if it ain't easy to use, I am not touching it )

A happy (albeit early) Father's Day to ya, DH!

C. The 20" mower has the widest cutting path of all our reel mowers. Two quick-release levers easily set the cutting height from 1-7/8" to 3", allowing a higher cut for better soil moisture retention, more effective weed control, and a lusher-looking lawn. The four-wheel design adds stability, with 10" front wheels and 6" rear wheels. This 30 lb, five-blade mower cuts virtually any type of grass.

With any luck, it will get here before the weekend

Hugh is so darn lucky! Nothing like cutting grass for the next 20 years to make a man feel....

Like he should have listened to his lovely wife to begin with?

Manly???

Truth be told, I think every guy (40+) deserves to have a lawn toy (a ride on lawn mower) but our lawn is just not quite big enough for that.

I suppose we could convert his to this beast -

Yup, that bike would be great! My fh uses one of those mowers at my grandpa's house, and he has over an acre to mow.

(Of course, my grandpa has a tractor that he COULD use.)

FH is a sharpening fool. (cough cough) I meant king, a sharpening king. He spends probably at least 3 hours a week sharpening knives and tools. He would probably love a seminar on sharpening a mower. Then, the sweetheart he is, would give me a lesson on it. Not that he would want me to touch it, but because Really? Does life GET any better than that?

hahaha - that bike thing is funny!

DH had bought a reel mower a while back but didn't think it worked well and sold it. We have a gas mower ... the lawn is his thing and I am not touching it!

I just started within the last month mowing the lawn. Of course, fh comes behind me with the line trimmer and makes sure it is just so. It has to be perfect for him. It takes me about half an hour to mow, and it takes him about 2 hours to follow up and get it to his standards.

Hmmm. I may be able to use this when he ticks me off. Maybe I can do stripes in the lawn or something. :bbidea:

My dad has a reel mower that is very old that he inherited from his uncle. They moved to town about 3 years ago and my dad used it to mow the front lawn. He says it looks better, but since he had 7 by-passes last year my mom made him give it up.

Hey Elizabeth! We bought one of those mowers too, but not to mow the lawn. :bbeek:

With 4 big dogs we have alot of poo in the back yard and DH decided he needed a "sweeper" to pull behind the 4 wheeler to pick it all up with. Well, after shopping all of the home stores, we couldn't find a sweeper that had blades heavy enough to move the poo, but we did find this type of mower and that is when I saw the light bulb go off in DH's head! :bblol: He lowered the blade to where it wouldn't cut the grass, attached a rubbermaid bin to the bottom back of the mower and handle and off he went sweeping poo! It actually works pretty well on the parts of the yard that have grass, but unfortunately we have more dirt and rock than grass, so it isn't exactly perfected yet! It was good for a laugh though!! If he does get it perfected, I think we should market it - although I have to come up with a better name for it than the "S*** Sweeper" as we refer to it now!

That is what happened to my Dad too (but we had a gas mower). Since I was the last of 5 kids, that was also the time that I started shoveling the snow and mowing the lawn. :)

He better be serious! I am not sure when it will get here. We will get an email when it ships but it may be as early as this weekend :)

Truth be told, that's part of it but I am afraid that we won't be so green when I buy the leaf blower. With the amount of leaves that drop in the fall, the rake is just not cutting it :)

At least you are trying! We don't have to blow our leaves.

Of course this is what our trees look like:

Doesn't look like you need much a lawn mower either LOL

If you ever get the hankering to rake some leaves into a big pile and then jump in them, just come for a visit in October.

In Russia, sharpening knives is considered a "man's job". In my host family, that fell on my host brother. He was a sharp guy, but not with the perpetually dull knives. For his birthday, my host mom and sister got themselves a "woman's" knife sharpener. It was awkward. ;)

You'll have to have a camera ready when your husband uses the mower for the first time :)

I was thinking the same thing; holy cr@p dude!

We don't bother raking leaves; DH will run over it with the mulching mower ;)

WOW! My fh would agree with that particular custom! I think it is a stress reliever for him though, because he does it DAILY! I think we have the sharpest steak knives in town.

I might just take you up on that!

Most people around here don't grow grass, they may have an area (teeny tiny) of grass, but mostly they do desert landscaping and rocks. I am a native, so there is NO NEED to have desert and rocks, give me grass any day.

Our yard is all grass. We are the only ones in the entire neighborhood who have grass.

Speaking of grass .... the aeration guy just called and they are coming this afternoon. Wait until DH hears that he's going to be spending part of his lunch home, flinging manure all over the back lawn

We had about 3 rounds of raking (just like that) before the leaves had all fallen.

Brandi - there are just too many leaves to mulch - unless of course we do it once a day during the fall season

My DH never worries about what lawn mower to buy. He's only ever cut the lawn once in Six years. And that was because We moved House and He was itching to get the new Gazebo up. :whyme:

I know what You mean about leaves in the Garden though. We have a huge Oak Tree next to the House. It's starting to bloom now. And everytime i look at it i have visions of every single leaf in our garden by December.

Yeah, that is some big honking tree! I don't know about you but I hope and pray for a wind storm that will blow all the leaves in the neighbour's yard :)

Wait until DH hears that he's going to be spending part of his lunch home, flinging manure all over the back lawn

So I thought I would give DH a break and so I started spreading it and before you knew it, I was done and he wasn't even home yet. BTW - Did you know that 3 bags of manure doesn't cover very much at all?

Did you also know that aeration makes it look as if 100 Canadian Geese have pooped on your lawn?

Yes! My university aerated their lawns (and also has a Canadian Goose problem). I was cursing the geese until I saw all the evenly spaced, symmetrical wholes too

It surely felt that way when we used to go up to my grandparents house upnorth! They lived on a lake, and holy freaking :cloppy: it was all over the lawn. There was no stepping around it. Blech.
