View Full Version : Bridemaid dress as a wedding dress?

Hi all,

just wanted your opinions: I'm getting married in a registry office, then having a marque in a field for the party afterwards. I've tried one quite a lot of dresses, but most wedding dresses are so big and have such long trains, and our field will have had sheep in it until a week before! Also, the moment a dress is a wedding dress it at least doubles in price!

Soo, Mum saw a BM dress in the shop which I tried on, and I love it, made me feel and look good, still floor length, and mine would be ivory, still looks to me like a 'proper' wedding dress, just less fabric and easier to manage and dance and move in.

I can't copy the picture because the website is all locked down, but its Ronald Joyce, BM dress 29521, except mine would have straps instead of the halter, and without the jewelly bit in the middle?

what do you think?

I think it's a stunning dress and would look great in ivory as a wedding dress! Wedding dresses have such a variety of styles now that no one would know it was a "bridesmaid" dress. I seriously contemplated a BM dress for my wedding, but I came across another dress that I couldn't stop thinking about. Had I not found that dress, I would most likely have gone the BM route.

That dress is absolutely beautiful! I say go for it!

No one will ask you or think about whether it is an orthodox wedding dress. It's a label really - and I can't generally tell the difference when I see white BM dresses and white wedding dresses unless the wedding dress is absurdly ornate.

Go for it :)

I agree, go for it!

It is all about style and what works for you!

I have always liked more of an informal and/or BM dress style :)

I know a lot of people who went this route, because BM dresses in white and ivory have the bridal look without the bridal price tag! The dress you selected looks gorgeous, and I know it will look perfect at an informal wedding like yours, so don't worry!

I think it's completely ok for you to wear any dress, regardless of its original intended purpose, so long as you love it and feel beautiful in it. :) Go with your gut and get the dress you love! :)

You'll see this a lot: It's your wedding, do what YOU want to do! :) I think it's a great idea! Happy planning!

I love the dress, and actually, it doesn't look very bridemaid-ish to me. I'm pretty sure I've seen such a design as a bridal gown...or at least many that are similar to it. I say go for it. I like the halter...are you sure you want to change that? And I think the jewelry is pretty. :) But that's just me. Either way it's a gorgeous dress!!

Its beautiful! I agree that I dont think anyone will tell the difference, it looks very similar to some wedding dress styles.

p.s. I liked style 29520 also! :)

Thanks everyone, just needed the reassurance. A lot of my friends have kind of been 'but it's a BM dress' without having seen it.

But I really love it, nearly cried when I tried it on! I think that's probably a sign that it's the dress for me! Next time I go home (it's from a shop in my parents town about 3 hours away) I'll go try it on again and order it hopefully. Then I shall post pictures!

Thanks again :)

Emma

I can't find a picture of it. :(

I wore a Bridesmaid Dress to My Registry Office Wedding too. Only Mine was in Red. No one came up to Me and said it was wrong to wear. Nor did it feel wrong either.

Go for it!!!

If you go to the Ronald Joyce website http://www.ronaldjoyce.com/ then collection 09, then bm dresses, then click on 16 its there. I just can't copy anything out of it which is irritating!

I just looked at the dress and OMG! It's gorgeous! I think it'd be a great wedding dress!

FYI: David's Bridal has a 'wedding' dress that comes in all different colors so that the BM's can wear the same dress as the bride, just in a different color. So technically, you can classify your dress as a wedding dress ;)

I have a BM dress as my dress in white and black, and I loooove it. No one can even tell it's a BM dress. And having a dress you love without the bridal gown price tag...is awesome. :D

I like the wedding dress with long train ,it make me like a fairy , here is the pic of my dress , from UBrides.I think the bridesmaid as a weddding dress is too simple , but if you don't mind ,its ok , remember wedding is an important occasion in our life , and maybe one time in our life .

That's a lovely dress too.

i guess its just personal. You're right though, I'm only planning on doing this once, so it has to suit me, and this dress does. And I won't wreak it partying in a field.

Thanks for all your imput everyone :)

But this is a different dress ... what gives; do you have two dresses or something?

here's my BM dress that I'm using as my wedding gown. This was the dress how it was off the rack. I paid around $300 for it, including rush shipping.

Thanks! Just showing that BM dresses in white can work just as well! :D

I think the dress you have picked out is beautiful, and think it would work great as a wedding dress!
