I am planning an August wedding in Hawaii on Waikiki beach. I am wondering if anyone has done this? Maybe not the same venue, but the same idea. I am struggling with gifts - mainly who to buy nice gifts for since i am not going to have a MOH and he isnt goin to have a BM. Its just going to be us up there.

Also, i need suggestions on hotels. I was born and raised in Hawaii, but have never had to stay at a hotel there. I have been reading that the parking situation is horrible, and am wondering if anyone has stayed at a hotel there that is nice and has parking -- not valet??

I don't have much of an input for you, but I just wanted to say I got engaged on Waikiki. So best of luck to you and I can't wait to see pictures!

It was! He took me to Hawaii for a week. Proposed to me under the moonlight after a nice dinner and a 3 plus hour walk on the beach! :o

Thats better than what i imagined! hah. Where did you guys stay when you were there? Was it a nice place, and would you recommend it? I keep going back and fourth on the hotel because we are going a week before and staying a week after we get married so it is going to be like 3000 dollars for the hotel room alone, so i want it to be NICE! I dont want to be dissapointed.

Eh. In hopes to not sound like a spoiled brat...we stayed at a hotel that would have not been my choice...the Holiday Inn. We were only there for 2 nights and we island hopped for the rest of the week. His parents actually paid for the room, and they don't really believe in staying in luxury hotels...where as with my family, we usually try to stay in some resort when we travel...so needless to say, it wasn't what I was used to. However, it was not bad and I definitely have stayed in worse.

What kind of hotel are you looking for?
If you are looking to stay nicer try the Hyatt at Waikiki. We were near that hotel and I absolutely wished we had stayed there...we walked through it several times. Here is the link to their website: http://waikiki.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

I have heard great things about the hotels out in Ko Olina. I have heard there is a wedding chapel out there and there is a luau I think. Or Turtle Bay!

Well, i thought i had my mind made up with the Hyatt actually, but, then i was reading reviews and heard that their bathrooms and some things in their rooms arent quite updated, but, it is the Hyatt, which I love too! Or, there is the Hilton Prince Kuhio hotel, which is newly renovated that seems nice too.. i guess i have to just decided... hmm

I was thinking of the Shearton on Waikiki to get married... i am not too sure though. I want something that isnt going to be too much work for me on the mainland with havin to contact vendors and things like that.

Yeah i have checked out the trip advisor website and that is what i am making my decision off, for right now. I just wanted to see if someone had actually be to any nice hotels that are on or by waikiki beach that arent super pricey, because i dont want to be spend 350 a night on a hotel room.

All these ideas sound great. Island weddings are so popular these days and it's easy to see why.

i don't know where the army base is, but for july 4th 2006 the navy sent fh and another sailor out there to do an emergency lcac repair....i know they stayed at a hotel(not the barracks), and i know they had parking, b/c fh was able to see their rental car from their room.....unfortunately, he's off driving some guys to the rig, but when he gets home tomorrow, i will def ask him where they stayed! i do know that where ever it was, it was within 10 minutes of plenty of things for the guys to do! also, when he came home, he mentioned the room was the size of our living room(so, about 15x25 +)? and it had a kitchenette and all kinds of stuff, and i guarantee it wasn't more than 125/night, cos the navy is cheap:winktongue:

Gifts? And it's just the two of you? I'm a bit confused, as you said, "It's just going to be us up there". If you will have some guests [i.e. family and and a few, close friends who will be staying a while close together, why not look into having some gifts made by local artisans, such as hand-carved items or other hand-crafted gifts? You could also provide gift cards to the hotel spa if you're staying in a resort hotel. Why not carry this over into your wedding favors as well? You could incorporate puka shell necklaces for the guys and puka shell bracelets or ankle bracelets for the girls. Happy Nuptials!

she more or less meant, they are not having an actual bridal party(maids, or groomsmen etc).....although great suggestions on a 1st post! and spa certs go well for favors/gifts, b/c that 1 day could go really far in relaxation!
